implantable screws

10/06/2007 9:02 AM

Hi all,

Does the Implantable screw in the human body can be heat treated for more strength?

I buy a high classified German stainless steel and use swiss CNC machines but the screws still can be bent, any advice.

Stainless or titanium?

One thing you have to keep in mind, when you induce one quality in metal you also induce others.

Such as if you heat treat to gain strength, you also can increase fracturablity.

One more then, it has been over 20 years since my physical meytalurgy classes, but I believe the treatment occurs due to the carbon in the metal, that changes the autensitic grain microsturcture. to a martensitic. This is only going by memory, I'll have to read up on it.

I recently moved could not find my books on the topics am looking

I know this doesn't directly answer your question but I am under the impression that the human body better tolerates titanium implants over stainless steel - would titanium offer improved mechanical characteristics for your application?

All mine are titanium - and theres a good bunch of it.

I really do not know about heat treating titanium. But, these guys do ....here .....and here.........It sounds as though you might be looking to using osteo hardware in some other application. Is this the case?

The strength of the screw does not really matter the bone it is attached to will give in first. What they seem to need is something bone growth would be able to attach to.

I also have a few screws and straps in my back. The doctor that did mine would not say what material he is using. (I promise to look and post the answer when I resign as a person)

I also have some implantable screws. Never thought about it, but it gives new meaning to having a few screws loose.

I do not think that the metals used as screws for implantation are stainless steel. There are though several types of stainless steels that can be harden.

Titanium is not used by the body and is used with Cardiac Pacemakers.
