12 v Motion Detector

11/20/2007 9:01 AM

I have a 12v system w 12v lights and would like to use motion detectors to save my batteries but I cannot find them sold seperatly. Will 110v detectors work on a 12v system?

Also if I switch to a 24v system will 12v lights/appliances work?

Not without an indepth knowledge of how they work so that you can re-design them to work at the vastly different voltage.

I suspect also that the 110Volt detectors will be using ac and you want to run them from 12 volts dc...

You need to know what you are doing to make this kind of alteration, and basically if you have to ask you do not have the knowledge necessary!

John.

Yes - just get an outdoor light fixture rigged with motion detecting (about $10), replace the bulb with a screw-in electrical plug, and plug in the transformer for your 12V light system, assuming your using the kind that operates off of standard 120VAC.

Motion detectors are basically sensors.Generally the sensors operate on on 9-32 v DC.This will trigger a relay.the relay also works same voltage of sensor.the relay contacts can be connected to your load, which can be any voltage.I dont think it is as simple mentioned by other member of the forum. One has to go through the specification sheet of the motion detector and decide the circuitary.

12VDC Passive Infrared Detectors (PIR's) are used in security systems. Four wires, two for 12VDC power and two for the internal relay. They run you about $15.00 US(module # CK-IS2535/P). You can buy them all day long in America. If this meets your needs, start with ADI Distribution. 1-800-233-6261. If you couple this with an Altronix (altronix.com) relay module ($10.00 US) it gives you contacts that can be rated as high as 30 amps-120V. Need more help, please let me know.

Good luck,

James

You have to check the specifications.

I am not in electronics but are using 4 types of PIR'S for security by just following the instructions on the specs. (actually 5 if you count the wireless.)

1) The main system pir's uses the 8 ohm internal resistor and is configured as normally closed on 12-15v dc. I would think 110v ac would not be acceptable.

2) On the second system (not coupled to armed response) I have outside pir's and wireless. Also used as normally closed with 8 ohm internal resistors.

3) I had some pir's configured as normally open activating a direct buzzer, Skipping the internal resistor. Can this handle 110 v?

4) Movement detecting lights. The pir switches the 220v light directly.

Regarding your question. I guess the electronics in your pir will need dc - that is a yes. The switch would also work on dc. - guess.

The system would not be tamper proof because on a normally open systems the wires could be cut.

It should be a simple installation for him. 12VDC powers the PIR, the normally closed internal contacts close when the sensor detects heat, it controls his lighting through a control relay. Altronixs also sells a timed relay if you want to have a preset time.

The relay coil is 12VDC, the relay contacts are RATED at 30 amps - 120 VAC.

I am licensed for unlimited voltage and low voltage alarms. (Seperate licenses)

He won't have any problems.

Good luck,

James

Go to a camping supply shop and buy the units you need "over the counter".......if not one near you, search the web for a camping shop.

If you are really from Holland, that must be the best place in the world to search! (going by your name only, its a good idea to post your location country at least too!).
