HANDBAGS -- What To Do With Them ???

12/01/2007 1:23 PM

The problem is set forth in the following text. ***********************

HANDBAGS GO WHERE?

Have you ever noticed gals who set their handbags on public toilet floors -then go directly to their dining tables and set it on the table? Happens a lot!

It's not always the 'restaurant food' that causes stomach distress.
Sometimes "what you don't know 'will' hurt you"!
Read on...
Mom got so upset when guests came in the door and plopped their handbags down on the counter where she was cooking or setting up food. She always said that handbags are really dirty, because of where they have been. Smart Mom!!!

It's something just about every woman carries with them. While we may know what's inside our handbags, do you have any idea what's on the outside?
Shauna Lake put handbags to the test - for bacteria - with surprising results. You may think twice about where you put your handbag.

Women carry handbags everywhere; from the office to public toilets to the floor of the car. Most women won't be caught without their handbags, but did you ever stop to think about where your handbag goes during the day?

"I drive a school bus, so my handbag has been on the floor of the bus a lot," says one woman. "On the floor of my car, and in toilets." "I put my handbag in grocery shopping carts, on the floor of the toilet while changing a nappy," says another woman "and of course in my home which should be clean."

We decided to find out if handbags harbor a lot of bacteria. We learned how to test them at Nelson Laboratories in Salt Lake , and then we set out to test the average woman's handbag.

Most women told us they didn't stop to think about what was on the bottom of their handbag. Most said at home they usually set their handbags on top of kitchen ta bles and counters where food is prepared.

Most of the ladies we talked to told us they wouldn't be surprised if their handbags were at least a little bit dirty. It turns out handbags are so surprisingly dirty, even the microbiologist who tested them was shocked.

Microbiologist Amy Karen of Nelson Labs says nearly all of the handbags tested were not only high in bacteria, but high in harmful kinds of bacteria. Pseudomonas can cause eye infections, staphylococcus aurous can cause serious skin infections, and salmonella and e-coli found on the handbags could make people very sick.

In one sampling, four of five handbags tested positive for salmonella, and that's not the worst of it. "There is fecal contamination on the handbags,"
says Amy. Leather or vinyl handbags tended to be cleaner than cloth handbags, and lifestyle seem ed to play a role. People with kids tended to have dirtier handbags than those without, with one exception. The handbag of one sin gle woman who frequented nightclubs had one of the worst
contaminations of all. "Some type of feces, or possibly vomit" says Amy.

So the moral of this story - your handbag won't kill you, but it does have the potential to make you very sick if you keep it on places where you eat.

Use hooks to hang your handbag at home and in toilets, and don't put it on your desk, a restaurant table, or on your kitchen countertop. Experts say you should think of your handbag the same way you would a pair of shoes. "If you think about putting a pair of shoes onto your countertops, that's
the same thing you're doing when you put your handbag on the countertops" - your handbag has gone where individuals before you have sneezed, coughed, spat, urinated, emptied bowels, etc! Do you really want to bring that home with you? Th e microbiologists at Nelson also said cleaning a handbag will help.

Wash cloth handbags and use leather cleaner to clean the bottom of leather handbags.

THIS IS WORTH SHARING!!!
AND MEN PLEASE PASS THIS ON TO YOUR WIFE, GIRLFRIENDS OR DAUGHTERS!
And how about just good female friends ???? ************* end of problem statement************

This is an opportunity for all the Good Engineers on CR4 to come up with some solutions to the several locations where handbags need to be kept off the floor and out of the dirt and grime.

e.g. Mountain climbing "Biners" could be used to hang up bags in a toilet stall to keep them off the floor.

What innovative solution can YOU come up with?

Have to have a think about handbags, but in the meantime, one of my big moans (along similar lines) is why do so many conveniences (for want of a better word) have doors that open inwards?

You spend ages washing and drying your hands - in the mirror above the sink, you see some other bloke come in and do whatever, then leave (without washing), pulling the door open by the self-same handle you must use. If its a busy enough place, you may be lucky enough to dodge out when someone opens the door to come in, but the only other alternatives to getting the dirty sods traces on your hands are to use a bit of toilet paper to hold the handle - which you then have to dump somewhere (and isn't very environmentally friendly) - or jump out the window.

Did you ever see that US detective series "Monk"? Sometimes I feel like that!

I agree with you 100%. Monk is a good example, I cannot even watch the lead-in to the show where he gets under a sewage outflow, UGHHHH!!!

In Germany some years ago a study was made about all the costs of warm air hand drying and paper towels. The cost differences were minor, total cost was about the same for both, but the towels won because of the extra usage to hold the shitty door handle!!!

A paper handkerchief does it for me where electric blowers are in use.....

By the way, being old and still observant, I have noticed many, many times that the "finer" a man is dressed, the less likely he is to wash his hands after leaving the toilet!!! The so called "Gentleman" is a dirty person.

Modern information is that shaking the hand of someone transfers MORE dangerous bacteria than giving him a kiss!!! Due to the antibacterial effect of saliva killing a lot.....!!

But this could promote misunderstanding I feel with your buddies!! So be careful with this info!!

I refuse to shake hands with people with colds, or wash my hands immediately if unavoidable......my family are far less susceptible to colds and runny tummies than any other family I know of.....

The proper etiquette when one has a cold is to bump elbows with the other person.

Hi Andy

By the way, being old and still observant, I have noticed many, many times that the "finer" a man is dressed, the less likely he is to wash his hands after leaving the toilet!!! The so called "Gentleman" is a dirty person.

So what am I then? I wash my hands before I go to the "Snake House". Just to make sure they hadn't touched a handbag. I wonder what Stinky Pete's procedures are. He could still be a perfect "Gentleman" you know.

CR4 is an amazing place. What will they think of next? Ky.

Stinky Pete knows his limits. That's why he hired professionals to maintain the sanitary facilities at the "Bath Memorial Souvenir Shop" in Etherville. You must go see the teenies he hired for the shop. Very cute in their pink plumbers uniforms complete with peek-a-boo crack.

The "Bed Bath and Beyond Memorial Outlet Mall" still needs more tenants. The latest is the Soap-on-a-Rope Shop. The Adult Bakery wasn't doing too well until it moved the entrance to the alley behind the mall. Now they are "busting" with business.

(For those of you who are confused, see "Bath Breaking Technique" thread. You will need a comfy chair)

It's a complete paradox that I ain't got Stinky Pete on my thread yet. 'Of all the people in all the world...'..I'm still seeking about another 150, so there is time. All the threatened ideas for continuation sit there - new bath/bog/sink etc. Old bath hasn't even gone to the skip yet. The list just goes on.

I did mean my hands and not the handbag Andy. It is hard for me to carry one. It always slips out. Some call me "Mr. Lube" (because of my short name), so I can take it. Oder hast du mich gerade schwule alte Rockersau genannt?

Gosh were having fun with CR4. Love it. Ky.

Kris sent it to me via cr4 message. Saved the file "TheHandBag1.wmv (video/x-ms-wmv)" to my hard drive.

An attempt was made to upload it but CR4 server(s) do not accept video wmv files.

A link to the original source (URL) appears to be necessary for others to see it or request it from Kris or myself by way of the CR4 mail system

That first word 'windows' should set alarm bells ringing. IE7 ? IEE wiring regs would be a safer bet for a good read. ROFL.

Any good handbag will contain a nail-file. Also a kitchen sink, large purse for stalling at Supermarket checkouts, numerous useless bits of paper, assorted sweets, 'lippy', loose coins, tickets for long forgotten events, keys that some partner has been blamed for loosing, cotton-buds (I have no idea why), various lost children, the odd snack bar or two, telephone list, cell-phone, letter from long absent friend, list of 'jobs-to-do', assorted make-up, Filofax, diary, advertising cards for taxis, pens, pencils, my cigarette lighter, her cigarettes.........Oh the list goes on.

If your wife just won't accept that her precious handbag might be unsanitary, just dare her to lick it... Of course, wait the seven to ten days for her to get over whatever she gets before kissing her.

When I read the first intro line "handbags go where?" I thought for a short minute that good old Stirling Stan was coming out of the closet. I thought that was funny enough to read but now I know the real gist of the story I cannot stop laughing.

These are the same creatures that tell you at home to put the toilet lid down (or was it up?) after we had been in the name of cleanliness.

Shit, my missus cought me typing this, see you later boys

Has anyone else noticed what they mean by 'put the lid down' ? They mean the seat bit with a hole. Demanding that the lid proper was put down would make some logical sense, but no, they mean the bit arranged mainly for their convenience. If one wants to prevent spread of germs then the whole thing should be shut. Having annoyed half the population, I will now advise that the average office keyboard has way more germs than a toilet seat - you could eat your sandwiches off the latter and get fewer germs.

Must dash, the Pizza guy is here...........

My sister in law always did it (bag of tricks on the table) , She had a thing about men touching the peppermints with unwashed hands

My wife was in hospital for an opp. The hospital has a spray canister outside all the wards. You are not allowed to enter without spraying your hands. A sort of volatile fluid containing traces of ether.

A solution may be to spray the bags, hands and other equipment before you may eat.

Here in the UK they have bottles of Spirigel which is alcohol based hand cleaner.

The only problem is you wash your hands with that stuff and then you put something in your mouth afterwards, you taste the most bitterness you have ever tasted in your life. Absolutely horrible.

I always washed my hands again with normal soap before eating but sometimes you just have to use your fingers for something and you would taste that horrible gag reflex inducing bitterness.

Still if it helps the dirt problem in hospitals, fine with me.

Someone has marketed a sort of hard shell plastic 'box' to hold about 10 or 15 baby wipes for carrying in the 'baby's bag.' Sure beats carrying a full box or a wad of them in a zip closure plastic baggie. Saw them in a grocery store among the baby supplies.

Same here Stan

I first thought it was funny like some others did and now I know it should stay funny. The fun is estimating the statistics of the hand bags being a threat to any one. The serious part is that we do have an immune system which has to handle thousands of bacteria, viruses, spurs and other not too healthy parts of our life. I am not disputing the presence of the danger. A danger recognised is better than having the guts being the only part of the body working to get rid of this undesirable never to be wiped out occurrence.

Even modern industrial kitchens are only as good as the chef implementing strict (and hardly ever implemented) hygiene rules. If you have a problem with hand bags belonging to our loved ones have a look at the kitchen in your favorite restaurant. Unannounced that is. Maybe you will be lucky and all is good. Hand bags are just a statistic.

The war for total hygiene has its down sides. We should not lose our natural immunity to the daily onslaught of all these bugs.

I will use the argument when my wife gets home and does what she always does. Drop off the bags right on the kitchen bench. Guess who will be the smarty pants. And guess if the practice will change.

I could think of some really nice punishments though. In my dreams.

What a lovely subject Stan. Ky.

PS: I know I should be working and not squandering time.

Wait a minute. Who wrote this thing?

Does anybody here personally know any woman who will admit to putting her handbag on the floor in a public toilet??

The women of my acquaintance are horrified at the very idea. They use the hook on the door, or the little shelf, or else they keep the handbag tucked under one elbow (very inconvenient), but they do NOT put them on the floor. To quote an actual woman: "YUCK!!"

Good reply from them, you have some excellently informed ladies of your acquaintances list, but sadly, that is not the rule I feel!!!

My wife (who hates handbags anyway) was horrified and knows of many who do just that!!!!

Am I under a misapprehension ? I thought these were expensive gadgets purchase with the sole purpose of putting them on a disco floor. Owners then proceed to dance around them in some weird sort of ceremony. The older they get (the handbags that is), the worse the tunes are as well (Mrs Skwirrel is currently on Village People). Perhaps you now all empathise.. My son dies a hundred deaths whenever John Travolta type stuff comes on . Strut your stuff skwirrels ! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bfcwYWivb3w
