Undergraduate Thesis on Defense

01/01/2008 11:53 PM

Hi All,

I am currently on a scholarship with the Royal Australian Air Force for my Electrical Engineering degree. I want to do my undergraduate thesis in the Air Force field, got any suggestions on what I should do?

Of course I can't build a missile or something, no academic in my university would support/supervise it.

Thanks in advance...

Why not work on missile or aiming theory that can be applied for peaceful applications as well?

Fighting forest or bush fires for example.

I want to do my undergraduate thesis in the Air Force field.

Don't you think you should go to previous thesis-makers/Phds and seek their advice or a drop in your Air Force library going through scores of thesis', noting them down, giving the list to your Professor/Instructor etc. for his selection or contribution, is the right way?

I can't build a missile - sorry that's been done.

or something - that's the list I'm referring to.

Well happy new year all! It's back to work now & I can see it going to be a good year.

I think with the increase ability in communications, we can now, hopefully, begin to hit the targets more accurately. This is going to be enormous step forward for the innocent neighbors.

Yes with more accurate communications, information such as whether there is an opposition leader in the house that's being targeted. Mistakes like this can be avoided. This is worth researching.

Yes with more accurate communications, information such as whether there is an opposition leader in the house that's being targeted, can more accurately be assessed, and "Mistakes" like this can be avoided. This is worth researching.

Hey Lucky86:

Here's a couple of topics that seem applicable.

"The Vulnerability of Geo-Positioning Satellites and All Supported Primary Targeting Systems to Rudimentary Nuclear and Missile Technology."

No Further Comments will be forth coming on my part.

Or

"Degrading the Force Multiplication Factor of Space Based Command, Control, Intelligence, and Attack Infrastructure Through Single Launch Multiplicity Orbit Contamination. "

No Further Comments will be forth coming on my part.

Or

"Using Ground Based Electro-magnetic Launch Systems for Low Earth Orbit Attack."

I would be willing to further discuss and study this issue only as it relates to the relationships of Kinetic Energy to Gravitational Potential; acceleration and projectile deformation; launch angles and thermal ablation; rudimentary pointing and leading. Also, the tube and launch circuitry because of its scaled similarity to futuristic ground based transportation systems. I will not discuss war-load design or detonation timing.

Or

"The Economics of Warfare - Using the History of Cold War I In Predictive Modeling For Cold War II - How the West Will Be Lost."

Open for discussion without restrictions.

Or

"The Strategic Advantages of Space Based Treaties In Design, Maintenance, and Compliance."

Open for Discussion without restrictions.

Or

"Security Optimization Through Space Cooperation and Interdependence."

Open for Discussion without restrictions.

Or

"The Metrics of Victory and Defeat - The Long Term Effects of Conventional Global Conflict."

Open for Discussion without restrictions.

Or

"The Strategic Implications of Environmental Degradation in Limited Conflict."

Open for Discussion without restrictions.

Or

"The Squandering of Our Future. The History of Military Endeavour As It Relates to Human and Physical Resources."

Open for Discussion without restrictions.

Or

"Survival of Our Species - Threats, Challenges, and Probability."

#1 Keep it focused - which means pick a topic so small you can cover most of it.

#2 If you want a good grade - you will have to do research.

#3 If you have to do research - do it in an area you are actually interested in.

Those are suggestions on writing a good thesis which what I suggest you do as it is what your instructors have required of you.

What follows is criticism.

A thesis is a paper. A missile is not a paper. The academics who would not support or supervise your building a missile are not the problem, but you might be.

You seem to not have any idea what you are interested in aviation electronics. At this point in your career you have a limited amount of practical experience and not knowing is ok. Letting others know your clueless is more problematic. In other words, if you don't cut it out soon you will have problems.

So, enough criticism, back to giving advice. The air force has web available information on topics of current interest in the form of RFP's. (Request for Proposals) DARPA also has good information. Many avionics company's have limited amounts of public information available. If you anticipate an Air Force career then do some research on what the good MOS (Method of Service) specializations are and tie your research and paper to a better job in the future.
