Psychology of Engineers

02/01/2008 8:52 PM

I am taking a psychology class this semester: Normal Human Growth and Development. As a part of the class, I've been asked to do some interviews to verify the results of a prominent researcher in the field of psychology. I have chosen to study Erik Erikson, and particularly his work in regard to mid life.

I am interested to see if the experience engineers, scientists, or technical people deviate from the psychological models that Erikson has proposed (see this link erikson for more info), assuming that a tendency toward logic and reason might make the way we deal with midlife different than the general population. I am also interested in differences based on country of origin.

So, the following is a survey that I would like to get some of you to fill out. Feel free to copy and paste it to a post and answer it, or if you do not wish your answers to be public, copy and paste your response to a private message to me. I recognize that I am not going to get a very significant statistical sample, but that is ok. Also feel free to go off topic, I am also interested in comments on psychology in general, etc, but I need the surveys for a grade so I would appreciate the help. Thanks in advance!

1) Are you male or female?

2) What is your age?

3) What country have you spent most of your life in?

4) Do you have children? What ages?

5) Are you involved with mentoring kids in any way (coaching kids sports, boy scouts, Sunday school, etc)? How often (weekly, monthly?)

6) At work do you participate in mentoring programs for younger engineers?

7) At work do you enjoy helping younger engineers succeed?

8) Is mentoring younger people important to you?

9) Do you teach in any capacity? (Sunday school, college, night school)

10) Have you achieved your dream for your life?

11) Have you given up on or modified your dreams or goals for your life?

12) Have you given up on further advancement at work (ie promotion to management, becoming a VP)? Or are you actively seeking additional advancement?

13) How many close friends do you have?

14) Have you been through what you would consider a "midlife crisis," a turbulent time in your life somewhere around your 40th birthday?

"There are lies, damn lies ... and then statistics!"

Nice job Steve, although the number of respondants make the results a bit shakey I guess.

"There are lies, damn lies ... and then statistics!" Then there are extrapolations and the world of dodgy decision making.

Thanks for the feed back.

Re: Psychology of Engineers

02/13/2008 2:20 AM

I guess it's my turn now,

1) Are you male or female? Male, last time I looked

2) What is your age? I feel 30-ish but my birth certificate says I'm 59

3) What country have you spent most of your life in? Canada

4) Do you have children? What ages? 1 son (26)

5) Are you involved with mentoring kids in any way (coaching kids sports, boy scouts, Sunday school, etc)? How often (weekly, monthly?) no

6) At work do you participate in mentoring programs for younger engineers? N/A at my work, but would if I could

7) At work do you enjoy helping younger engineers succeed? Yep

8) Is mentoring younger people important to you? Sharing knowledge with anyone is important

9) Do you teach in any capacity? (Sunday school, college, night school) Taught college - Project Management for a couple of years

10) Have you achieved your dream for your life? Most of them

11) Have you given up on or modified your dreams or goals for your life? I guess we all do. At age 5, I wanted to be a swineherd , in my teens it was to be an astronomer, then later a veterenarian. I wasn't too swift with high school health and biology so that fell through. I finally decided to study engineering and now here I am.

12) Have you given up on further advancement at work (ie promotion to management, becoming a VP)? Or are you actively seeking additional advancement? Not interested in management - love engineering

13) How many close friends do you have? 2 or 3

14) Have you been through what you would consider a "midlife crisis," a turbulent time in your life somewhere around your 40th birthday? Not what you'd call a midlife crisis, but had a job loss in early 70s when work was scarce and that put a huge strain on the family.

Re: Psychology of Engineers

Hahaha, LOL

I was born in Hungary and my grandparents lived in a little village where I was taken for visits in the summer. Now, picture this. Village square consisted of a central artesian well where everyone came to get their water. My grandpa was the local pharmacist so had his house/pharmacy in this square where, if I climbed up on the fence, I could see all the goings on. One of the things that really appealed to me (as a 5 year old) was watching the older boys (must have been 10 years old!) herding the pigs out to the fields. These guys had little horns made out of cow-horns that they would toot as they passed through the square. You can imagine how this impressed me at that tender age, so I resolved to become like them when I "grew up".

..... One of those silly memories that's fun to share as you get older .....

It's only us, guys from the "sun belt", who voice our appreciation of the result of the survey? At least, it showed to me that I might still be within the standard deviation limits of ....normality.

So I drew a conclusion after reading only the last three posts. And I have published, with aplomb, my conclusions.

Am I alone doing this, in the world (including scientific, engineering and medical fields)?

"...alone doing this, in the world..."

Nah, you're in large company there. I've noticed that probably 43%-45% of the people who post here seem to have read three or fewer previous posts before chiming in. The big difference is in the aplomb - the 43-45% I mentioned; I doubt if more than 5 or 6 even know what aplomb means (suspect they think it's the fruit that when dried gives us prunes, which they should be full of...).

Well, me neither. I've got this set of 200 "shocking" words and, when I want to be perceived as having three upper degrees of errudition above my usual, I look up into the dictionary":

A plomb (French) - a guy uses, on a string, a lead weight (I suspect that he is a fisherman). Only the vertical position of the wire gives him the confidence that he is right ....angled.

Before any tickets are issued, we will have to redesign the ticket machine, there is a flaw that when used, you can either cut yourself, or pull it down on top of you, cause no doubt, 1 hand will be holding something, and the spare is trying to remove the ticket from a machine that is not fully secured to a stable surface

It seems that you have used that ticket machine but, from your narration of the events, I understand that you haven't follow the right procedure. The humans on this Earth have, by (design) definition two hands, and those ticket machines are built for them. On no account, those who came from other solar systems, should use the spare hand. Everybody knows that doing so, the ticket dispenser might fall down, especially if the "puller" has not an even distribution of coin money in his right and left pockets.

You suck! Horrible effort. What crap! You should be ashamed.

I just like being different.

Hello everybody,

I'm not an engineer (so no answers, pls), but I like to read your posts. And I'm just 36.

It is very interesting for me to see your ages, really (some were mentioned or implied before in different posts, but this is like a summary, thank you Steve!), and other things about you.

Pls receive my admiration and appreciation for your sharing. I think sometimes words are not enough to describe how helpful you are. Here I'm taking off my hat. :)

I'm the one that did post a question about coating on ABS surface while ago.

Sorry for not logging in. My time...

God bless you all.

Mishka
