india -voltage levels

Voltage levels in india are maitained at 220 kv,132kv (in transmission ),66,33,11,6.6,3.3kv (inn distribution level) .........all these are multiplies of factor 11. and my Q is why these are maitained as factors of 11 .

Explain me with ur ans plz?//////////

Hello Guest,

The reason for your Voltages/frequency in India is simple: The original Electrical Supply was set up by Companies from England, who supplied Alternators, Turbines, Transformers, Pylon Transmission Tower lines and more.

If you go to Russia, the voltages/frequency are different.

Likewise France, US and so on.

Whoever got there first, and installed electrical equipment, obtained it from their favourite supplier/Country.

I'm sure you appreciate with extensive infrastructure now in place, it is difficult to change, and in most cases, entirely unnecessary to change the existing situation.

One could always state that Queen Victoria or King George made the rule because it was the only way the population could be controlled.

It should also be stated that any enquiry will be considered high (voltage) treason.

This should take care of the evident conspiracy theory.

They are classified in to Four types UHV-700KV,400KV EHV 220KV,132KV,MV 66KV,33KV and LV 11KV 6.6 KV 440V and 230V

voltage levels in India at present are 400KV,220KV,132KV,66, 33,11,6.6 3.3KV.APART FROM THIS IN TAMILNADU THEY USE 110KVAND 230KV ALSO 22KV PARTLY.TAMILNADU IS THE ONLY STATE STILL USING DELTA STAR TRANSFORMERS IN THE SUBSTATIONS ALL OTHERS USE STAR/STAR.AS REGARDS THE MULTIPLES OF 11 PL REFER EARLIER THREADS .

I think there are some technical reasons of Alternator design and manufacturing. I studied this in past but dont remember now. Anyone can explore this aspect, is welcome.

it is bekoz form factor of sinusodial ac wave form is 1.11, rms value=1.11*avg value thats why the result comes as a multiple of 1.11.

Dear Anonymous Poster,

The Answer is simple. If you take and refer the Standard Electrical Engineering Text Books, the derivation of EMF Equation, rms value is involved and in the derivation a factor of 1.1 is involved or deduced.

For Example, the Text Book - ELECTRICAL TECHNOLOGY by H.C. COTTON, Prof. LONDON UNIVERSITY, FUNDAMENTALS OF ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING A.C. MACHINES by C.L.DAWES etc.and many more.

The voltage being SINE WAVE and the voltage is either stepped up or stepped down, MULTIPLES OF 1.1 from the fudamental equation, IS RECURRING and hence we get, 11, 22, 33, 66, 110, or 132, 220 etc
