Daytime TV ad's, who buys this stuff?

03/19/2008 3:30 AM

I've watched a lot of daytime TV over the last few days, A touch of the flu, kept me on my back, with little to do, but, watch TV. Who buys this stuff they ram down your throat. The Crazy Fox, get rich and don't work, buy this pill, loose weight, and still eat like a pig, how about the Kanoki foot pads, to clense your system. Don't people read the small print, that says "results not typical", or "results may vary". At least the Ronco type stuff may, in fact, work. Or Billy Mays, who will sell you a product that will restore your 40 year old bathroom to pristine condition, for 20 bucks. They must sell this this stuff, or they would go away. Is the American public that stupid. The big print givith, and the small print takith away.

Ha..you got me thinking...you'll regret it .

Maybe it's a cultural thing....my wife's family have always bought stuff from catalogues. On the other hand I was brought up being told these things are always a rip off, poor quality and never look the same as in the picture...they are always smaller too.
My Mum wouldn't let me send off sixpence for the rubber powered swamp flyer on the back of the Weetabix packet and I really really wanted one.
(Thinking back with 50 years design experience, she was right...it wouldn't have zoomed about the garden like it did in the picture)

There...I said you'd be sorry

Same as UK public...

I think the social divide between the 'haves' and the 'have nots' (both financially and intellectually) is being increased all the time.

<....Same as UK public...>

To paraphrase John Ruskin: "There is always someone in this world who is prepared to make something a little worse and sell it a little cheaper. Those who consider price only are this person's lawful prey."

Some might measure a person's worth by the number of things (s)he can do without.

One of the issues with other countries' television is that the programming is excessively modulated by advertising. And one of the many things Americans are curious about when they come to the UK is the concept of television and radio programming that doesn't contain any advertising at all. Hmmmmmmmmmm.......

True, but that would set consumerism on it's collective head and cause the world economy to collapse....the mind boggles that majority sensibility might be bad for society in general.

The other point (now being observed by the American public) is that most of this stuff is imported junk and the distributor doesn't even see the garbage being shipped out (often from third world factories). The distributors are usually "fly by night" outfits with little or no reputation to maintain, so they skip out.

Probably the same people who invest in free energy or perpetual motion devices.

These people are not cheap - They probably have to charge x times as much to make up for the (x-1) sensible persons not buying.

Like the big looong pitches sent by email. The longer the pitch the riskier the deal.

If you don't KNOW what you are about to buy DON'T! !

Sorry to say, the general public is mostly ignorant, so "hearing" or "seeing" is believing. (the news companies who sell based on viewership or readership certainly understand this.) Although far from the first, P.T. Barnum probably said it best ... "there's a sucker born every minute". Even if we believe the corollary that "if it's too good to be true, it probably isn't", we (you and I), too, will be temped to buy based on advertising.

Add to this, that most of us still seek 'instant' (or at least fast) solutions to our problems, we are open prey to any possible solution. What's interesting is that we are told of problems we didn't even realize we had ... and we believe it !!! While most of us readily detect the bigger, faster, harder (you figure that one out ), cleaner, softer, thinner, tastier, prettier advertising, I am totally intrigued by the pharmaceutical companies now telling me of diseases or ailments I never new existed. BUT, I know now if I ever get "restless leg syndrome" there IS a pill for it.

If we are honest, we have to admit, we don't need most of what we purchase.

The hucksters of today are no different from the 'snake oil' salesmen of the past ... just a better medium to a larger audience.

Luckily I have not fallen in the trap. But I must say that my wife nearly did. I had to try everything to convince her that it is sales gimmick. My brother's wife bought, and returned the item. It was then swapped 3 more times and finally they got their money back. What really gets me is this. Next time any of you sit and watch these nice promising ads please take a close look at the actor/actress in this ad movie. Suddenly this person has become spastic or deranged. Suddenly they cannot cook/cut/drill/clean etc unless it is with this product being advertised. It is so annoying. Do these advertising companies actually believe they are selling the best product on the market? No. They know it is rubbish, but the money makes up for it. It is cheap crap for suckers, and we fall for it. How do you stop it? You cannot. There will always be some sucker to be caught. And boys and girls, it is normal people like you and me. Just keep your wallets closed and don't buy TV ads rubbish. It is said " It is easier stealing $1 from a million people, than stealing $1000000 from one person." Enough said.

And the line that makes me most suspicious, after an opportunity to purchase at 1/4 of the 'suggested' value, "BUT WAIT! that's not all........"

Unfortunately I live with the buyers of these products. At first it was fairly easy to avoid them, I just deleted them from the remote and if the "clicker" didn't stop it was on to the next shiny object. My better half will see something and buy it before she even knows what it is. I am waiting for her to order an electric dog polisher, or right handedtoaster. I am always sending stuff back or cancelling orders after I Google for info she she learns its a scam.

Her daughter was wade for TV info's, she has every car/hair/cleaning/weight loss product that does not involve work or time ever invented. She just needs a machine that will process her credit card without having to take it out of purse.

Have a great weekend

I'm suprised that KrisDel™ hasn't tried to exploit this market.

However, my company, Consolidated Gookumpucky, will be promoting by infomercial a new product, SmartSuperDuperGlue. It stays stuck until you want it to unstick. You just apply a little bit of this SmartSuperDuperGlue Releaser....
