AC Fan Motor Problem

04/28/2008 9:21 PM

The fan on my home AC system is behaving oddly (1/4 hp, 60 Hz). As it runs along it slows down. I can hear the pitch change as it slows, and the air flow goes to nothing. If I turn it off for 10 minutes or so and start it back up, it comes to normal speed, but then over the next 30 minutes or so it slows down again. I can feel the outboard bearing and it is hot, but not too hot to touch so if it is a bearing problem it must be the fan end bearing. Is there anything electrical that could cause this? I will replace the motor and that should fix it, but I am a bit curious as to why it is doing this. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks!

Many of us keep saying that it is big because we all are sticking to shaded pole motor, which are used with output upto about half of the one used in your case, about 1/6 hp.

Designers tend to use simpler motors for lower cost. The motor in your case are pretty involved in manufacturing, coil winding, insertion, insulation... are far more complicated compared to that of shaded motor, hence bound to be more expensive, that surprise at least me, therefore reckon it is big! You paid for that anyway!

Surely, I am not trying to compare a kid with a giant. It is big only compared to shaded pole motors. Probably you have seen a lot of big guys, while we are thinking of small ones.

I am not a long standing member of this form. That said, I have never seen such an on going debate about a simple, cheap, fractional horse power motor. The billable time spent on this article could revitalize the space program. Time to put this puppy to rest. Buy a new motor and run capacitor. If you can specify one with ball bearings all the better. With the unit in the attic, hire a victim to do the work. I have spent one too many hours in a attic. You either get to freeze or broil. Not to mention the insulation itch factor.

Good Luck!

We meet here to talk about such things because it is fun. I fixed the motor myself, because solving problems is fun, and because I am cheap. None of the time spent on this issue was billable, everyone volunteered their time, and I got lots of interesting advice...
