Aluminium clad foam insulation board

06/08/2008 7:46 AM

Hi Gang I screwed up deliberately bought too much board for my roof (to allow for 'contingencies' ...3 sheets ) Anyone have any funky ideas for using the excess...I did think about a BIG cool box for beers . Maybe a 'Solar' something or other?

Del
(Dunno how I screwed up, cos I got the EPDM sheet spot on)

A few more solar water heaters to add to the collection! How big are these deliberately bought excess panels of yours?

Got 'em off the interweb...I do have a pooch porsche porch which will need rebuilding sometime. I got too much ply as well but that was bought local and the guy will take it back....I just dunno how I got the EPDM sheet spot on (and that's the expensive bit) but screwed the rest up...maybe I relaxed and took my eye off the ball or was thinking 6x3... I dunno, mind I still saved £££ by doing it myself...

I've been taking pics so I can post it as a blog <come back everyone >

Maybe I could give that Freecycle a go...

I don't have a suitable site..and the foam board isn't suitable for blades ..but other than ...that a fine suggestion

I built a little 'play' generator earlier in the year using a car fan motor and blades cut from plastic drain pipe...not enough wind in my garden... or it's too gusty...trees and other buildings etc. .

Here are the blades resting on a tree stump....

I am building 3 of these windmills and plan on using setup or down transforms to supply all the power I need at the farm. I want to totally disconnect from the grid if possible. I have a cave on the property with a large lake about 2 miles back in the mountain. Divers have yet to find the bottom of the lake. Hopefully in a few years I will be totally self sufficent.

Taxes will my only worry.

I know you have a nice solar water heating system already,but...
You could be have installed second shower cabin just in your garden with small water tank on its roof. Tank is filled by rains either by hose. Waste water could be gathered in underfloor tank for further flowers'/trees' watering either you could direct waste water somewhere you need having shower. I'm supposing this shower does not need any "controller controlled" sophisticated devices.

I wornder if that would work at a pig pen. Install one to let the pig walk in and shower off after a roll in the mud. Real pig not my kids although that is not a bad idea either.

Re: Aluminium clad foam insulation board

It is not my invitation. This construction had been designed and installed by my father so long time ago when I was a boy. There were two separated cabins --- one shower itself, second for clothes changing. You needn't come in home being worn at dirty working rob and smelly socks (four? ) . I have no any idea do you like sing songs enjoying shower, but if you like it I hope your neighbors will be enjoyed with you.

You can redirect waste water in sew system as water will be some soaped, but as I know for trees and flowers it can be used directly.

Good luck.

I guess forming thme into a faceted hyperbolic reflector with focus of say 34000 ft to reform ozone and blast fugitive cfc molecules above the cat house is not permitted by zoning or aviation officials?

Make hats out of them, sell them to the loonies that believe either aliens or the government is beaming thoughts into their heads. Say the hats are extra resistant to the beams because of the insulation.

Hi Del. Thanks for the Freecycle plug. You could try Ebay first, although I know transport of large light things is a problem. I use modelling foam and but can't sell any because 1 its dear and 2 its way to dear after its posted. I am close enough to pick it up myself from the factory.

It does look like you've got a large batch heater, or the bottom of an 8 by 4 solar heater.

Storing it inside against your coldest wall might be good.

I remember a little alarm going off in my head when, after asking for insulation way above current specs, our builder said 'there's a point at which insulation actually stops working'.

Yeah

Keep us updated

Why don't you put them on the floor just in front of your solar panels, should double the amount of incident heat under certain circumstances.

Excellent..That's something I had been thinking of but hadn't got around to either
a) working out the angles, or b) trying it out.

Maybe if I position them to maximise the early sun it will give a quicker warm up and improve the capture..

That would be a good way to implement a sort of passive solar tracking (deliberate contradiction in terms) or even an active system, cos they are nice and light and would be easy to motorise.

I shall do some 'armchair and bottle of beer' design.

Re: Aluminium clad foam insulation board

Hi Del

Go and measure your windows around the house first. Then take the ply and cut stripes out of it to build a frame for the insulation board. One strip on each side. These could be simply screwed together. (Sandwiched around the edges). They could still be a bit wobbly but never mind because once you attach them to the out side against the windows you should have nice insulation against the cold wind in winter. Make sure they are a bit larger than the windows. These removable insulation boards could save you a lot of heating in the cold months. They would not take up a lot of space if stored upright in the garage or were ever. With the amount of material you have you could possibly cover all of your windows facing the weather side. Were you are it would be the N/W sides of the house I think. Fitting and removing them could be a bit difficult for one person, but then just get the the neighbors tom cat to give you a hand. They still talk to you, don't they.

I trust you will be able to improvise on the fittings which would be the only other thing needed. Like some hangaonerers/overers and some latches to secure the now framed boards. Order some more than you need and get on to CR4 so we can work out a way to use them. Tell Mrs. cat that they will only be there as long as it is dark, which in winter is about all the time, if I remember correctly. You could fly me over and I would put paintings of your choice on them so that they don't look like you had material to spare. Just my $3000 worth. Not including travel. Have fun, Ky.
