IQ Tests

07/04/2008 11:00 AM

I have always felt that the Science/Engineering community represented the highest levels of IQ in our society and that we should be looking to that sector to direct our policies in the governments of the world rather than the politicians; however, I am of course biased.

I am interested in doing a quick survey of our august group of bloggers. As we sign in under pseudonames, I believe that it might not be considered too personal. If you consider it too personal that's understandable.

If you know your current general IQ level based on somewhat recent (+/- 10 years) testing are you willing to devulge it to the group?

Does IQ change much with age? I suspect that as we get older, the mental portion of the ratio becomes harder to maintain. ANy comments?

Big Ed the Cat suggested this for IQ testing of humans being trained by cats (sometimes called "owners" by foolish old ladies).

I believe that cats must have the highest IQ of all mammals. It doesn't matter how you hold them before dropping them, they almost always land on their feet. I wonder what Del will say about this post.

They don't if you tie their feet together.

Plus i had a fat cat that would fall asleep and fall off the back of the couch, he would just land however he fell and make a big yelpish meow. I am not sure if he was just too lazy to care or could not consider far enough ahead what the consequence of that fall would be or what.

Re: IQ Tests

I have had several IQ tests when much younger and ranged from 125 to 140. No idea of the percentile. I was able to self study for a Series 6 mutual fund license and passed the test that was designed to be not passable by most who took it and was ready to take the Series 7 stockbrokers test, getting 85% on the sample tests, also self taught, when the firm dissolved.

I can agree that the tests are biased toward people with education, because those without education cannot even understand the words being used or the concept being tested. While the intelligence of all people has the same range, their ignorance can adversely affect the IQ scores they get. The guy who sees an AK-47 and a wrecked truck, then sits down with home made tools and makes an AK-47 from the truck that works, that man has a high IQ. He may not be able to read much or do much math or the 'x is to y as y is to ?' type of question, but he has the 'common sense' intelligence.

Of course there are also educated fools, who can quote great literature, do calculus, program computers, construct bridges and buildings, yet fall for the most outlandish theories and gimmicks, because they do not really believe that other people can be right. They reject the proven rules of science and see all who tell them they are wrong as as great conspiracy of Scientists to keep them from proving their pet project. They are the professors who invest in options, gambling on the market, who want to blame someone else for their own actions when they lose all their money. The same types who invest in "guaranteed return" schemes or actually think some crooked bank or government official in Burkina Faso needs them to help get millions of dollars out of the country. P. T. Barnum was right, but it applies to all levels of intelligence.

IQ does not prevent someone from being wrong, although it helps them to argue their wrong ideas convincingly. You also don't have to have a high IQ to be right and sensible.

140 is in the upper end of the 98th percentile approximately. However, anything above 120 is not very accurate, and tends to vary. 100 is about normal, so i guess if you took the time you could calculate the bell curve distribution (or look it up online).

Are you trying to make guests look bad, or just dumb? What do you mean by "mental portion of the ratio"?
