Fill Your Car Tires With Nitrogen?

08/12/2008 7:05 AM

A radio ad wants you to improve your car's mileage by 20% by having you stop by their Orlando shop and getting your car's tires filled with nitrogen. I'm sure that the 20% improvement is as real as many of the other attractions in the City of Famous Ducks and Mice. But, I also know that nitrogen cylinders are sometimes used for shocks and lifting cylinders. Therefore I suspect that there are some advantages to nitrogen over air. What are the pros and cons of nitrogen vs. air?

a way to separate a fool......

think about what our atmosphere is made up of....[78% nitrogen]

sounds to me like they are selling an idea more than anything, and just making sure their customer's tires are properly inflated.

Here's a pretty good article on nitrogen in tires:

http://www.straightdope.com/columns/070216.html

I also think I saw something in Consumer Reports saying don't waste you money on this.

In industry, nitrogen is used because of the low moisture content.

Re: Fill your car tires with nitrogen?

I have used nitrogen for a long time now and are satisfied.

It did not cost me more and do not cost anything to top it up again. (I don't think giving something for free is conning - but they sure gave their opposition hell)

Their first claim is that it maintains pressure for longer. With that I agree because I have to top up my wifes car much more frequently.

The second claim is that it is running cooler - I did not do any measurements but think it does.

Third claim improved mileage. Satisfactorily - It is hard to compare between a Monza with normal air and a Camry 300. The gravel road I do a lot of tends to chip the face of the Michelin's.

The fourth claim is that it cannot explode. (no comment)

The only disadvantage I can think of is getting it inflated in a small rural town.

I always fill my tires with 79% nitrogen and 21 % oxygen. Best of all, they don't charge me extra for this special mixture at the tire store. (Has a small amount of CO2 and argon and other gases but it's pretty close.)

Now that I've made my snide comment, I have a question. How do they fill the tires with nitrogen?

If they just fill the tire with nitrogen, well of course it will have some percentage of oxygen and water vapor.

Do they pull a vacuum first, then back-fill?

Or do they perform a series of inflate then deflate evolutions to purge the noxious gases from the tire? Have to do it at least three times to get the nitrogen percentage up.

Perhaps they break the bead slightly and then purge the tire with at least three times the volume before re-seating the bead?

Or maybe you put the tire changing machine and the tire in a vacuum chamber. A turbomolecular pump can be used to get the initial partial vacuum followed by an ion pump. The operator would wear a pressure suit like the astronauts and enter through an air-lock. After the tire is mounted, the nitrogen can then be safely pumped into the tire.

Better yet, send the wheels and tires up on the space shuttle where they get mounted and filled with nitrogen and then returned to earth.

Hee Haw Hee Haw! i enjoyed your response to this one. i doubt any service station attendant is going to do this, and i would bet that 99 percent of the people asking for this service would realize that they only recieved a mimimal amount of nitrogen i n the topping off process. However they believe that they too are as special NASCAR people now. Oh you can also get your own at home unit for around $3500 US if you are so inclined. LOL. I wonder if it will reduce slippage on my tractor tires in loose soil?

I want to fill my car's tires with hydrogen. That way I'll get better gas milage because it will be lighter.

Then I'll paint "Hindenburg" on the side and wait for the lightning to strike.

Yeah I know it leaks out really fast but it's a small price to pay for fame.

As long as it is at least 96% hydrogen, you're good to go. It won't explode.

I did find this link to a related article:

However I don't think that Fuel efficiency would be considerably higher...

I will keep using 78% N2 and 20 % O2 + all other elements in the readily available

at any local Gas station compressor.

Re: Fill Your Car Tires With Nitrogen?

From the field;

The truth is (from my limited back ground) nitrogen molecules are larger the oxygen = easier to keep it inside the tire that has very small holes.

Nitrogen is dryer = less moisture in the tire is a good thing.

Nitrogen is less susceptible to temperature changes = it does not promote tire heating like oxygen.

Of the 25,000 plus tires that I needed to keep the proper pressure inside of during my tour in the USAF I never put anything in a tire except nitrogen.

I hope that is not to much info. Put the nitrogen in your tires and see for yourself after you collect some data for two or three tanks of gas so you can compare afterwards.

I was a bit puzzled by this as I assumed that the leakage rate would be something to do with effusion and Graham's Law, which says that the rate of effusion is inversely proportional to the molecular weight. As Oxygen has a molecular weight of 32 compared with Nitrogen's 28 (and air's roughly 29) then I thought that Nitrogen would be the most 'leaky'.

Then I found this link and it explains all (I think - I must read it properly)

http://www.getnitrogen.org/pdf/graham.pdf

Must try and do some sums sometime

My take is this, if the tire store offers it for "free" (NSTAAFL), sure go ahead and get the N2 fill. If it costs extra, forget it. Waste of money for everybody but the space shuttle, aircraft, and racing teams.

Heard of the Nitrogen, havn't tried it, saving it to regas my 16" travel FoxShocks

Running your tires at recommended pressure (as opposed to the pressure car dealers run the tires at) will save you fuel, as the car isn't trying to push the tire against its will as you drive down the road.

If you want a simpler example, compare a low inflated bike tube to a correctly inflated one, the correct one will be easier to pedal, just some of those road ones have quite a high pressure.

Yes, it will lessen the chances of explosion, as the tire heats, the air pressure will increase, generally above Max rated pressure and the only escape is to blow out at the weakest point, if you use something that heats slower, then you'll have less pressure problems, but no matter the tire, under inflation, you'll not get a explosion, unless the car is already on fire.

Re: Fill Your Car Tires With Nitrogen?

2%, maybe. 20%, no way!

My tires are filled with nitrogen, but there was no extra charge for that service. (I'm not sure if there might have been an extra charge for the green valve stem covers).

I believe the most important factor is the lower humidity, so less condensation and resulting loss of pressure when it gets cold. As someone pointed out, I doubt if they truly purge the air when inflating with nitrogen, so there will still be some water vapor, but the amount should be significantly less.

Actually, where I live, the daytime humidities are pretty low, so it probably makes less difference. In Humid places it is probably a more significant factor, although in a properly maintained air compressor, a lot of that moisture is drained out the bottom of the tank. As I write that, I recall finding out that the new supervisor at one of our plants did not know that need, until we discovered the tank nearly half-full of water. I suspect that more than a few gas stations have similar situations. I would hope that professional tire installers would be better informed.

Quality of "professional" tire installers can vary widely. The yahoo (store manager no less) at my local NTB (tire store chain here in the US) didn't know how to order a radial trailer tire and kept ordering the bias-ply tire. Apparently he didn't know that the "D" in 205/75D15 means bias ply instead of the "R" in 205/75R15. I eventually just gave up out of frustration and kept the bias-ply since it was for my spare.

Seems to be that since the O2 leaks out faster, as you continue to add air, the percentage of N2 will be increasing. Everyone should be checking their tire pressures once a week anyways !!!! Reliance on 100% N2 to obviate the need to check your tires as often is a dangerous practice. A nail puncture will give you a slow leak that you might not notice unless you have a pressure monitoring system.

Amen to that! Just a couple of weeks ago, I kept having to air up the driver's side rear tire on my pickup. Every 2 - 3 days, air required. ASAP, I took it to a tire store, they found a nail, patched the hole, and it's good to go. 17 clams and change.

Y'all been out of touch a wee mite too long, I reckon - they haven't worn red coats for quite a spell now...

But I tire of the debate over the proper spelling of tyre. Personally, I always thought Tyre was a part of the ancient Phoenecian empire - along with Nineveh. Present day Lebanon and environs. But that's just me.

I think the Phoenician one predates the US Tyre by about 4500 years.

Obviously. Stamp taxes, tea taxes, representation with or without taxation and vice versa, lone gunmen, grassy knolls, missing circuit court judges and union presidents, it all goes back years... We've got more conspiracy theorists than particle physics theorists, so it is a substantial part of our employment rate. We've lost enough jobs to overseas outsourcing already - don't go messin' about with our conspiracies, now!

I found this other link: http://www.getnitrogen.org/why/index.php

The only connection to fuel efficiency is that proper inflation of a tire does present less resistance to rolling and thus lowers fuel consumption. Then according to what I learned from this thread and the links that I posted is that because N2 is a larger molecule than O2 or CO2 etc... it stays inside the tire longer that the other molecules in air. According to this, O2 and other smaller molecules permeate through the pores in the tire causing a loss in air pressure.

I think that the solution would be to check tire pressure more often rather than purchasing Nitrogen. I bet it takes some energy to Isolate N2 from the air.... so from an economic or environmental standpoint I would still stick to regular air and check tire pressure often.

If your worried about water vapour in your tires.

Ok, tractors move slowly, if you wonder why, some fill their tires 50% with water to lower the centre of gravity of the whoe machine, also allowing the tread to dig more effectively.

Real bugger tire changing.

Up north, we add salt to the water to prevent freezing in the winter. When the tire is wet, you can tell if it was from the water in the field or a leak by tasting it...

Found no real benefit for passenger cars. Most important thing to do is keep the tires properly inflated.

Only real benefit personally observed is in race cars. "Pure" nitrogen is more stable in high speed racing applications, being less susceptible to pressure changes. Major league race cars' handling can be greatly affected by pressure changes as small as 1/4 psi.

I use nitrogen exclusively in my tires. With nitrogen there is no moisture content therefore no expansion or contraction of the tires with temperature fluctuations.

My tires have lasted well over the recommended replacement mileage and at $200 per tire on gravel roads over 5 years and 130k odo .....I WILL CONTINUE TO USE NITROGEN.

I have not noticed any improvement in gas mileage except in winter when the 02 levels are higher.

The question is at what temperatures. Nitrogen becomes a liquid at -138'C and a solid @ -190'C. The temperature range -50'C to + 140'C has no observable effect.

I did all my mind expansion back in the late 70'-early 80's. Brightly Colored Frogs and mushrooms are permanently off my diet. Besides, there really hasn't been any good sunshine in a very long time.

As for Castaneda, you don't have to worship Mescalito in order to maintain conciousness post-mortem. I know several Tibetan techniques that work much better. Try a good translation of "The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying, or, Hearing in the Bardo" it is the best translation of the purist form of Hineyamah Buddhism (Small Vehicle or Monastic, Buddhism) as contrasted by Mahayana Buddhism (Large Vehicle or Layman's Buddhism) ever published.

I hope I've answered all your questions, especially the ones you didn't ask.

Might have been. Were at the Bonaroo concert in Tennessee? I was there for the 'Dead' concert. That was the evening the Phil Lesh told the 'Ugly Dog' story (it was a terrible joke and I won't repeat it here, but it was very Phil Lesh).

Things started to bottom out when we all ran out of smoke. We were all bumming and word got back to the 'Dead' and within 15 minutes the had opened the emergency supplies. Those guys used to get some amazing smoke. Didn't even notice it was raining until Jerry popped 2 strings and Phil took the mic to explain that they had to take a break and restring the guitar. Then he said "I hope it stops raining" that's when I noticed that we were all soaked. Whole thing turned into the biggest mud-fight since Woodstock.

Those were the days. I feel sorry for this generation. They won't be able to get away with 1/8 of the shenanigans we did.

Keep it cool, keep it groovy and keep it hip and never trust anyone over 90.

Peace, Bricktop,

Hiya, Unitech,

You've hit the nail on the head. Carlos Castaneda. There are 12 books after "The Teachings of Don Juan". I suggest you read them. It's an education in anthropology. I wouldn't recommend ingesting peyote buttons. You have to barf to get off and it's very high in strychnine.

That was then. Today is a completely different story, perpend:

Crack Cocaine - one hit hook - you smoke it once and you are hooked.

Ecstasy - also XTC, MDMA, MDA, overdrives the seritonin production in the brain with the possibility of 'suicide Tuesday'. If you take Ecstasy on Sunday than by Tuesday your seritonin levels are way below normal, hence the depression.

Of all the friends I lost in the various wars this country has fought, I lost more friends to various drugs, and that hurts worse.

Don't mess with drugs, cigarettes, and alcohol - most are very hard to beat, especially alcohol and tobacco. I've been trying to kick tobacco for 30 years. I've tried literally everything including magnetic-ear magnets, that purport to press on a pressure point and blocks cravings, to a medication called Chantix. which purports to do the same. Nothing helps. When I get nervous I have to have a cigarette in my hand, if not my mouth, even unlit. If you want to have a "mind-expanding" experience, practice hatha-yoga for one hour 7 days per week, and learn to meditate - it truly is the best 'high' you can get, bar none.

Please, my friend a fellow hippie, please heed and hear.

Peace, baby bro,

Back luck with the cane toads. Lots of damage in Australia with that infestation.

What I'm reffering to are oddball religious Christian cults that use the toxins from frogs and toads to get high on. Some also use rattlesnakes though the methodology is somewhat differrent.

No wonder the Eastern Diamondback is on the endangered list. Poor buggers having to suffer those indignaties.

So...how's the tippy toe'ing amongst the constrictors in Florida these days?

Don't know why it's sidewise 'cause it's not a sidewinder, nor how to right it, but from last February...

Good job of manipulation - remind me to ask how later...

See, the camo pants don't work so well with the heat-sensing capabilities of yon snake. It didn't act a bit romantic (unless you count the %*#$ YOU! attitude it had). It was not the slightest bit happy with me for moving it to new territory.

Can't say I blame the snake for being a tad pissed. Good of you not to have harmed it.

Here we have the Massassauga Rattler. Cute little buggers that are endangered. There is currently a $10,000 fine for killing them.

Had them back in Kansas, too, but very uncommon. Cute? Depends on yer point of view. Mice don't seem to have the right viewpoint...

Try Bromochlorodifluoromethane................if your tyres (please note correct spelling) get that hot that they catch fire...............you have an excellent, if not one of the best extinguishing agents on hand...............of course it is a prescribed gas, being a CFC............thanks to "Friends of the Ozone Layer".............had better not go any further, I may upset the "tree huggers."

Mobi, I've heard the phrase "never waste wood", but I suspect that young lass has misunderstood it's meaning....

The nitrogen filling myth has spilled over from racing technology. Race teams travel around the country and encounter all types of humidity and weather conditions. A tire left out in the rain will collect liquid water and that water will turn to steam under racing temperatures. Steam in the tires creates difficult to control pressure changes, that do not occurr with dry nitrogen. Dry air is just as effective as dry nitrogen in tires, however the cost of nitrogen is only slightly greater than air and is a good sales gimmick. Steam in tires also affects the reliability of internal pressure sensors.
