New Folder Problems in Windows XP Pro

01/05/2009 6:00 AM

Hi,

I have a question:

Under Windows XP Pro I cannot make any new folder. When I come with the mouse on the field for New Folder it jumps out.

Any suggestion? It will be highly appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Nick name

Hello Nick name,

it's so weird..

Have you faced the same problem under Safe Mode?

If your file system is FAT (unlikely) here's a restriction for number of 8.3 file names in root directory. It's restriction is getting worse for long file names. If so convert your FS to NTFS and/or defrag it.

Have your particular folders(My docs, desktop) become (casually) as read-only?

Try out alternative file navigator

regards, caramba

GA from me as all your points should be fully checked. Anyone using FAT system nowadays is really asking for trouble!!

It also could be a virus....

Sounds like a virus.

I saw something similar once. Someone sent us supervisor types an email with a button that said "click on the button to view how much your bonus is". When you put the mouse on it, the button would slip away. You can never catch it.

I later learned that it was created with Visual Basic.

Might be that someone created a virus with the same features.

regards,

Vulcan

If you don't mind to use old DOS commands, I would suggest Start->Run-> then keyin:

md Directory_name.

For example: md c:\new_folder.

For deleting: rd Directory_name.

Take a look over there. Andy Germany had given useful link for free downloading of DrWeb cureit program. It's very cute.

could be your mouse. try a different mouse.

sometimes when the get old and the switches fail, they will perform oddly, and double click when they should only be clicking.

Regards

How many folders/Sub-folders/sub-Sub ... you have.

I remember that there are some limit on ..

I face the same problem on USB Stick.

When I send a folder or file to "USB Stick" Error message that cannot copy or make "xx" folder or file [in ROOT], but when I copy it as sub-folder of any existing folder, it copies without any problem.

I shifted some of the files & folders to existing folder, The "Send To" is OK & copied promtply.

Try it ..

Check your permissions. Are you a user or administrator. Should give some error message though. If you have the right to create folders but can't then it is either a virus or some sort of driver or hardware problem. Do computer maintenance (virus scan, malware scan, driver updates) and maybe even system restore if problem persists. Good luck! Keywalker
