Just a few shots of last night's spectacular lift off of the Space Shuttle. Night launches are the best. However, it was very, very windy and I had some camera shake, even on my heavy duty tripod.
Lift off across the Indialantic River...

The launch took place just after sunset (officially)...

Notice the plume color starts out red...

Then burns white...

Now bright white as the orbiter reaches an altitude where it catches the last rays of the sun...

Booster separation...

Orbiter is on its own, but the main tank is still attached and the main engines are taking into an orbital insertion.

Boosters returning to the Atlantic and will be recovered for a future flight.
Oh, and the pollution! Notice the plume. Because it is at sunset there are striations of color through the plume. The plume remains for quite a while.
