STS119 - A View from Our Neighborhood

03/16/2009 9:20 AM

Just a few shots of last night's spectacular lift off of the Space Shuttle. Night launches are the best. However, it was very, very windy and I had some camera shake, even on my heavy duty tripod.

Lift off across the Indialantic River...

The launch took place just after sunset (officially)...

Notice the plume color starts out red...

Then burns white...

Now bright white as the orbiter reaches an altitude where it catches the last rays of the sun...

Booster separation...

Orbiter is on its own, but the main tank is still attached and the main engines are taking into an orbital insertion.

Boosters returning to the Atlantic and will be recovered for a future flight.

Oh, and the pollution! Notice the plume. Because it is at sunset there are striations of color through the plume. The plume remains for quite a while.

Shot over the harbor.

Nice! Wish I could have witnessed it myself.

Very cool color in the last one!

There's a mushroom that produces some "rocket fuel" (hydrazine isn't it?). Some people even eat them, they warn em to "cook thoroughly" and "never breathe the fumes" I mean "don't be sniffing that stew"..

Awesome pics. I was at my aunt's house in Sebastian watching the launch and I have to say, in the 20 years I have been on the Space Coast, it was one of the best that I have seen. I didn't have my camera with me, so I coundn't post any pics.

Thanks for sharing

Someday I want to see a launch of a space craft in person. I've seen the shuttle on it way to the launch pad but never an actual launch.

Like Gilgamesh seeing the launch of rockets from the abode of the gods in the forest of cedars in Lebanon, it is awe inspiring!

I rated your thread a 5!

If it wouldn't be too much trouble, please email me larger versions. I would really appreciate it.
