What Reading List Would Enable the Rebuilding of Civilization?

05/10/2009 1:34 PM

There was a time when Man the Toolmaker, could be embodied in one man who knew all there was to be known. That guy knew how to make a fire, or a sharp hand held axe rock, and then a spear, and a bow and arrow, some rope, and string.

Say there was an Apocalyptic Riot, and we were returned to the Stone Age, temporarily?

What Books of Engineering and Science would enable the rebuilding as quickly as possible the best of our civilization?

As a start I nominate the Boy Scout Handbook and Merit Badge Manuals.

P.S. I decided to put this in the Education Section as it was a question inspired by the discussion of Free University Education Chrisg288 started.

Re: What Reading List Would Enable the Rebuilding of Civilization?

I knew an aircraft mechanic who told me a story of using JB Weld to fill cracks in a busted boat motor cylinder so as to get back to port from the sea.

I knew a pilot who told me he found God, and was made a believer when a mechanic showed him the insides of engines on the Beech 18 he had been flying.

Knew a guy who spent 3 years in Attica who told me, "Civilization is Three meals thick." - he also advised, "Never fight with strangers, you don't know what they've got."

We know that Del the Cat will never starve since he can make a bow and arrow most any day.

Wonder if a CR4 Bookstore is a good idea?

Share of the proceeds, reader suggestions, that sort of thing?

Don't knowif Globalspec carries books.

I've not noticed that Globalspec carried books either.

I do think a good reading list is important, and feel as a community of friends we could come up with an important reading list.

I've certainly enjoyed CR4 enough over the past couple of years to look for ways it might be funded.

Sometimes I imagine the Onion model of online and print for science and engineering geeks.

You gottah admit some of the so far Reading Lists for enabling the rebuilding of Civilization are informed, and excellent.

Damn thing about books is that they are so heavy, and take up so much space.

A Kindle Loaded and powered by Solar with all the most important books might make the rebuilding of the great things possible more quickly, though books and scrolls are known to be of lives in the thousands.

I've never had even a great radio last a lifetime.

I am frightened by the fact that knowledge is as delicate as it is.

I think we could be proud of a really good Reading List, whether it made any of us any money, but think as well it would be good if CR4 made money to operate and expand from endorsements of important books.

I still think well of Jason Epstein's book, Book Business, Publishing Past Present and Future. The model of University Book Stores and Airport Magazine Stores that have no inventory, and print to demand by interest or assignment will long be workable.

The future is here, but it really is not here everywhere all the time.

Otherwise my prior paragraph would be false and no more of value over the next 5 to 7 years, which aint that long.

I nominate Chrisg288, Milo, Endigan, and whomever they want to work with to decide and codify the Reading List to Rebuild the Civilization that I hope will be the result, and set in stone, end of this thread.

I dont' know if anyone else has mentioned this, but I came across a magazine called Back Woods Home, and it is filled with self-reliance tips..

also, the classic Reader's Digest Do-It-Yourself encyclopedia was very good at teaching how to build..most anything.

Backwoods Home Magazine is an excellent source of self reliance and I would also suggest Lindsey Publishing. They are one of the few sources of books by Dave Gingery. Dave could build anything from nothing. Using his books one could build a complete machine shop from scrap. I know I've done it.

Re: What Reading List Would Enable the Rebuilding of Civilization?

05/11/2009 11:01 PM

This thread is heading off into the weeds, with pyramids and ancient civilizations and aliens and all, but here is a an on-topic reply to the original post.

Given an apocalyptic event and the crash of civilization, I don't believe it is necessary to drop back to prehistoric times and a stone age level of existence and then start up the ladder again. I think we would have to drop way back from where we are at, but not that far.

I realize it isn't the most convincing example, but consider the Mark Twain novel "A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court." Written in 1889, it chronicles the life of a late 19th century American living in the Dark Ages, and many innovations he was able to bring to that time. The Yankee was not a degreed engineer, but he had a working knowledge of most of the basics.

The point being, it would be an interesting exercise to determine what level of civilization we could keep up with a relatively small number of people with some basic technical knowledge.

An example would be that it would be vastly easier to keep an electron tube (valve) technology alive than a transistor/ integrated circuit technology. That isn't going to get you computers right away, but it will keep radio communications going.

As many have pointed out, a vast library isn't going to be immediately useful, and if we descend into a complete disintegration for a generation, who will be around who can even read the books?

So I believe the first useful step is to establish at what level of technology a civilization can be kept going without relying on the very high degree of specialization required of today's technology, and I suggest the Connecticut Yankee as the point of departure for deciding what that level is. Not meaning his specific knowledge as detailed by Mark Twain, but that concept.

Now I haven't been keeping up with every single post on this thread, but of the posts I did see, no one mentioned medicine. Seems that is a major omission. You aren't going to have open-heart surgery and the like after a crash, but the basics of what makes an operating room click, including cleanliness, and anesthetics, seems reasonable. You won't have the carefully metered and controlled anesthetics of today, but even ether, the first anesthetic, was not just a miraculous boon from the point-of-view of eliminating pain; it was a facilitator for huge advances in the operating room that would have been completely impossible without anesthetics.

Working models of "sustainable technology" in the sense of working museums dotted around the country wouldn't be a bad investment. By "sustainable" I do NOT mean "green." I mean sustainable at a level of much less human specialization. I don't know if it's still there but the (Smithsonian) Museum of American History and Technology used to have a machine shop from the nineteenth century - with lathes and milling machines and saws and drill presses, all run off of turning shafts run parallel to and just below the ceiling, that all ran off a water wheel. All the machines ran off of belts from the ceiling shafts.

I have some antique radios built in the 40s and '50s, and you can tell that most of the parts were built at the radio factory, as opposed to caps coming from one place, transistors from another, and so on, with the radio manufacturer acting largely as an integrator, as is the case today. You go farther back, into the '20 and '30s, and this trend towards building things from the ground up in one place becomes even more apparent. It's the same in many industries, such as autos and airplanes. As technologies mature, there is increased specialization. We need to look at the inception of the various industries upon which we still depend to find that point of intellectual sustainability.

There, I like that term much better. It removes the horrid pejorative tinge of green from the concept.

Emc c has pretty much summed up what had been written (with important additions). A GA of course.

Is there any reason why hardly anyone had paid attention to organisation? Wild competing families? Remnants of the dead civilization in the form of tribes with their chiefs? Lone predatory survivors?

Any optimal library could be meaningless without some specialisation, division of labour and lists of priorities.

Re: What Reading List Would Enable the Rebuilding of Civilization?

An apocalyptic event that kills vital functions of our civilisation?

One of these functions may be semiconductor manufacturing.

But what event is likely to really kill this: worldwide distributed design and manufacturing available now?

Big meteorite: will kill all of us if really big. (Not really likely within the next 1 Myears)

Smaller meteorite. may flood half of Europe and/or North-America if hitting half-way between Acores and Iceland. (More abundant as the big ones but not likely to hit a vital point.)

Pandemic: (killing 30% of total population as the pest in medieval times): may not interfere this much in vital functions. (Very likely within the next 50 or 100 years but very likely vaccination can prevent the worst.)

Yellowstone volcano blowup: likely within the next 100 Kyears, south-Asian communities, Australia and South-Africa will survive. Will these countries be able to maintain an emergency-life until recovery?

So what really would be necessary is a compilation of vital functions: not only as stated above: "semiconductors" but the points where vulnerability is highest.

May be pure silicon manufacturing.?

So all these catastrophic scenarios do not yield any clue or arguing what really may happen and which grade of severity this event will impose on us.

That is why I am thinking something different will happen: slow decline, so slow that not easily to diagnose until too late.

The knowing people that are able to know and transmit the knowledge and if necessary demonstrate (may be not at masters level) seem to be rare today. As the sophisticated solutions grow there are fewer and fewer people able to build these without the help of a group of specialists.

The number of these essential people that transmit civilisation seems to be fading slowly until only so few are remaining that any minor event may trigger the crash.

This fading may be insufficient training at young times or may be the ever growing demand for highly skilled people. These people are producing goods that are intended to be used by everybody: not raising skills at all. But preventing adequate training between age 1 and 20.

So I expect that we (our civilisation) will fade into nonexistence by a simple side effect of this civilisation:

we act against nature, survival of the fittest is no longer existing.

So this will take centuries to work (Roman empire took from first signs of rotten rulers, Nero, to the first resigning to foreign troops (Huns in northern Italy) around 250 years and then additional 120 years to total breakdown.

Any generation will have its problems but only a very few will see the underlying principal problem.

So please post if you think we can correct this or preserve somewhere the (non-existing) knowledge how to build a community that is more natural.

RHABE-

Your point that an apocalyptic event is highly unlikely is well taken, and pockets of survival would probably exist for quite some time. I am not sure I agree with your point regarding a pandemic, however- back in the days of the Black Death when 30% of the population of Europe was lost, communities were far more isolated than we are today. Even in the early 20th century, the spread of Spanish Flu was limited somewhat by lack of transmission venues. With air travel today, and the concentration of populations in urban centers, such pandemics have the potential to spread much more rapidly and with much more deadly effect than the historic examples.

With regards to what is truly necessary to preserve the essence of civilization, here we may disagree significantly. Semiconductors have made our lives very comfortable, safe and affordable, but are they really essential to societal survival? I would point out that the medical advances most responsible for the impressive improvement in life expectancy significantly predate the development of semiconductors (surgery being perfected during the American Civil War and the Crimean War, if memory serves me right, and germ theory and the concept of sanitation gained it's greatest momentum on the basis of the work by Louis Pasteur, for example). Henry Ford did not need semiconductors, or even computers, to develop his revolutionary manufacturing concepts. US Industry did not need semiconductors or computers to achieve phenomenal manufacturing quantities of Liberty Ships in World War II, or even to develop the technology that, arguably, brought the final phase of that war to a rapid end (referring, of course, to the atom bomb).

The point is, all of this is nice to have (my cell phone and computers make life a whole lot easier, and contribute greatly to the spread of civilization to more isolated regions of our world), but are they critical? Food is critical, and getting food from where it is available to where it is needed is critical. Water is critical. We have only had distributed electricity for something on the order of 120 years, so how critical can that be? Shelter is critical, but more so in some parts of the world than others (I believe one should include in "shelter" the need to protect oneself and one's critical resources from others who only know how to steal, rather than produce). I am of the opinion that metal working is a critical technology, because of the potential for magnifying the effects of one's manual labor significantly. Beasts of burden offer the same advantage (when was the last time any of us saddle-broke a horse, or hitched a mule to a plow?). Others may differ on this point.

Historically, great strides in the advancement of civilization (or, at least, the winner's definition of civilization) can be associated with the development of new transportation technologies (horses as personal transport, sail power, coal-fired trains and ships, for example). Whether the advancing parties are more civilized than the parties retreating in the face of that advance is an issue that will never be resolved to the satisfaction of all...But transportation technologies are probably critical to the survival of civilization (i.e., for getting the essentials from where they are to where they are needed- including getting doctors to those in need, or those in need to the doctors).

There have been some very good suggestions for appropriate volumes for the "Survival Library" under the "most likely scenario" such as you suggest. The key, I would think , would be to start preparing now with cache's of the most important volumes in various locales throughout the world- we might call them "Public Libraries". If I remember rightly, one of Ayn Rand's novels was based on some future generation re-discovering just such a cache ("Anthem", if memory serves...)

cwarner7_11,

you are a very good writer and thinker. (where is your book?)

I agree with what you are saying, and I believe that you are itemizing the list I gave earlier as to the hierarchy of needs. in descending priority.

Air
Water
Food
Clothing
Shelter
Energy
Transportation
Communication
Law
Government
Defense

There is of course so much more to this, but its a start. As to what a person needs at any given moment.. its a lazy susan, where what you need is raised to the top. (as given by the Value Formula - first term)

The other fear I have when it comes to the devolution of civilization is the subsequent rise of global fascism (which I think is the reason 'they' are doing this).. and then, as in Hitler's program, the elimination of intellectuals, and burning of books. The rise of the brown shirts was enabled by the fact that the Nazis were feeding them. I think this is a much more dangerous possiblity than a complete apocolyptic breakdown also. Remember Hitler came to power with more support than W, and on the ticket that he could fix things, and restore Germany to her 'rightful' position and greatness.

OK, NOW I got problems

While nature is far more symbiotic than we knew

Nature is also willing to accept HUGE losses in populations that are not viable.

Your system by definition is designed to "preserve and protect" which I would argue is a serious thumb on the scale. And presumes greater both wisdom and knowledge than we have.

I'm not willing to have the viability of my population be determined by another human. that is not freedom. If nature decides I'm not viable, thats different, and I'm with you...

but the system I describe is all about the value humans place on all things, including other humans, and that is the point. Humans need to be on the top of the value system. otherwise, as in history, life is cheap, and you know what happens when life is cheap.. you can be killed for just being the wrong color or religion.

If Humans are the most valuable thing, then that won't happen. It would be more like talent shows, which demonstrate the amazing things humans can do regardless of what they look like or where they come from, or how old they are, or any other thing.

nationalist pride... please consider this... German high command felt betrayed by the civilian government leading to Treaty of Versailles, the heavy punitive damages assessed them ( Germany ) after the defeat leading to an economic depression that was worse than the Crash of 29' in the us..

as in your earlier threads..

these conditions lead to massive civil unrest..idealogical prejudice, racial prejudice

the setting up of a " grass roots " swell of pride coming from such dire conditions , such as the most recent us presidential campaign ,.. imho : would only be the natural swing of the penduleum...

and don't forget .. the Brown shirts modeled many of their techniques after Capone' regime ..

" voter's were held hostage, kidnapped and murdered.. "

also committing acts of terrorism, then being the 1st ones to cry " foul "..

more food for thought..

Certainly Hitler doesn't recommend Democracy.

William James did point out earlier that Democracy was "delicate".

William Shirer in his book The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich, did cause me to wonder if you could do as much good, as Hitler did bad, by using Hitler's political tactics and strategies.

Carried out, my last declaration of war was on Asteroids, which we know is stupid unless they are painted to look like evil M&Ms.

Now I do want to visit China because from what I know it is the longest running "civilization".

I would like to spend some time in a Chinese Library since the Chinese have no alphabet, and talk and write as they apparently decided to do for a longer time than any of the rest of us.

Certainly a book as a book,is useless if you can't read it.

I am allowing for the fact it may be useful if you are cold, to burn it.

Re: What Reading List Would Enable the Rebuilding of Civilization?

05/12/2009 3:07 PM

books are valuable, and when I was thinking about value, I considered them as a type of currency..but I eventually came back to Water. I'm sure this will wander off topic but...

Water is, next to a human, probably the most valuable substance... really it should be valued much higher than gold. no life without it for us. no air, no food, no ice, no industrial processes, no steam engines, no grist mills, this list is damn long.

we use it for almost everything, and with its ability to transport and store energy (gravity, wave, flow, or heat), dissolve other materials, be split into hydrogen and oxygen, or combine with other materials, etc (ie concrete)... it should be near the core of our value system.. next to humans value of course.

It is involved in almost all the natural processes.. the hydrological cycle, erosion, (making soil), photosynthesis, not to mention the life giving solution that is the oceans and other bodies of water..

and for all we know, we have all the universe's supply. It could be finite, (not likely) as much as we are. Water is so valuable to us that it is nearly impossible to list all the factors in our existence in which water is involved.

so why not make water a unit of currency? The justification for fiat currency is supposedly that the currency is elastic, and that this allows it to be controlled and therby prevent severe depressions.. it is really a crock. It is used to enslave.. period. Water is plentiful, but is essentially inelastic. What makes it a potentially useful currency is that you can add energy to it, and remove energy from it. That means that the money has a direct link to energy, which has a direct association with standard of living.

The purity of water, as pertains to potability is also a factor that is of use, as it can be tied to human existence, as it is life supporting. (spend a couple of days on the ocean in a rowboat, and see what I mean) Water has natural inherent value that can be increased or decreased by energy and purity.

Water is also a renewable resource.. its cleanable and resusable.. not only that, but with a technology such as the SuperCritical Water Oxidation, you can heat water to supercritical steam, inject it into a chamber holding any organic substance, and then add pure oxygen, and the organic matter will be combusted to an atomic state... thus purifying the organic waste, and making recyclable the matter in it.

No matter what happens in the future, I personally guarantee water will play a central role. Water has really enabled us to get where we are. It will enable or disable our future.

Exactly why water should be exempted from consideration as a currency or who'd be the greater drug dealer?

Cwarner,

I agree totally that a pandemic will spread much faster today because our transportation is fast compared to slow movements in former times.

But the density of population in any cities from the first beginnings until now in some areas did really facilitate in infection not ending until the surviving people were immune.

(Pericles died in Athens in 405 BC of the pest (the black death) transmitted by fleas and having a big outburst as the space between the "long walls" from Athens to Piraeus harbor were crowded with refugees - the Spartans were outside - the pest was inside, they had better decided not to defend.)

I agree with you that we do not necessarily need semiconductors fro survival. But if you look what will break down if semiconductors are no longer existing? This was my thinking: we cannot switch back fast.

Medical achievements: yes some are necessary for a flourishing community: clean water, waste-water, sewage are essentials of first order, same with vaccinations, same with knowledge of poisons and antidotes including snakes. But most of this is not an absolute necessity - mankind did not have this information for how long?

Metalworking: yes absolutely, but who would be able to rework unused railway tracks into spear- and arrowheads?

But in early history horse riding predated metalworking, ropes, leather and wood will be sufficient, but who can work with these?

No copper nor tin ores of quantity surviving longterm mining. So no bronze nor brass, no alloying elements in iron or steel except in reworked material.

No aluminum-production possible as no high power electricity nor the necessary kryolithe from Greenland.

So in total I do not believe in survival of civilisation in areas of high density technologically advanced states. I estimate 1ppm to 100ppm of living persons in western Europe will be able to survive, may be much more in the US and still more in Mexico and Canada and still more ... Look at the Amish people, there is a lot of working knowledge.

Wagon-building, ship-building, sail-making, necessary above stone-age status.

So the most critical path may be a place and method how to prevent the holy grail of remaining, surviving books from plundering and anarchy and new churches.

The best and largest library of the early antique time was burnt in Alexandria (by Cesar). The next best or still better 300 years later by fanatic Christians in western Turkey - then part of the Roman Empire.

So how to store the knowledge?

How to print - not on CD or DVD nor USB-stick - synthetic paper as used by the military may be good but is not fire-resistant.

Ceramic paper would be best but who will pay for this? What else is possible?

Below is an example of a very early radio (AM only) no energy needed, earphones missing. (Lucky to get it for nearly nothing - most people don't know what it is.)

You will need to build one: Bakelite (phenol - formaldehyde resin), metallic plane plates to build the variable capacitor, thick wires and metallic posts and tin-lead solder for interconnection, litz-wire insulated by silk, cotton or glass to wind the low capacitance coil, a piece of lead-sulfide (galena) with a small flexible and adjustable contact acting as the high-frequency demodulator and some ordinary wooden parts to make the case.

Re: What Reading List Would Enable the Rebuilding of Civilization?

Guys, we are all extremly resourcefull individuals, given any normal collapse i have no doubt we could survive, the problem is the vast multitude who are basicly sheep, that when hungry turn into wolves. So if you're really talking about surviving a collapse of civilization, doing it on your own is very difficult, you have to form aliances, for communities and build compounds, and then maintain them to hand down to decendants. The medievals knew about survival and providing for offspring. Larry Nivens book "Lucifers hammer" can give you a very good idea of how a civilization deals with colapse and given todays clueless society all the quicker the decent to anarchy and canibalism.

The sheep of today are very likely to run off a cliff and carry us with them, look at the political situation....

If the killer was a disease, with a high mortality rate, (russia made some with a 97% kill rate), then the anarchy would leave us at a level of the bow and arrow (when every thing runs out) and rebuilding would requir generations and centuries, then instead of books your talking about having basic instructions writen in granite on monuments, and kept in a dry rocky place (sand covers water erodes), with a language tutor.

I prefer to go about this a different way, being a reformed survivalist, (there are 13 steps), and understanding that in reality our society will rot at the core until we fall apart, the conclusion I come to is it would be better to not be here when the shit hits the fan. Where do we go? all the useable land is taken. We can start a civilization at sea and mine the wind, farm the sea. We can start one in antartica, under ground and mine the minerals. Ultimatly we could go to space and be free totally at last. Im not saying that any of these would be easy, but north America used to dream big and build the imposible, and we just havnt done that for forty years, since we sent men to the moon. We could build big again, this may be the forum to start it. Lynn aka SPACECANNON

Some of my dearest friends are un-reformed survivalists - and if one steps carefully they are excellent friends.

Step carefully until you know which ones are just totally batshit crazy.

Allowing for cultural differences I have always taken Mad as a Badger as about a 6 - entertaining but not dangerous whereas Batshit would be a 9, liable to take offense, follow you home and require police intervention.

That would put centerline of the normalized at around 4, since I don't think there is a whole lot of sane running around modern society.

Or I may have misunderstood Badger, and cultural calibration is required

For my own edification, where do mad as a badger (a ferocious creature over here) and barking mad fall into the general scale of mad dogs and englishmen?

Even as a desert dweller I've been known to stroll in the noonday sun - should I be worried?

Shower, yes, but we're relatively stable in the bath . I was thinking "mad as a barrel of frogs" could come in at about 3. "batshit" is good, but I'm a bit concerned that it doesn't allow much scope for insertion above position 9. "Ape" is fairly widely known (as in, "went completely f****n' ape", but I'm not sure where it fits in. 5 ?

ape was always a prefix where I come from

I went Apesh*t being the common form

but really only middlin crazy, so yeah 5

But on a more serious note: I sometimes wonder if English is the best common ground to meet on for an engineering blog

I wonder how that member distribution is coming

And I wonder if like Esperanto - there could be a "language" of engineering?

"And I wonder if like Esperanto - there could be a "language" of engineering?"

I wondered a similar thing... and came up with the idea that science could largely be expressed algorithmically. here

If you can do it for science, you can do it for engineering.. why not.

In programming, you have certain structures which permit logical thought to be described and made functional. Why can we not encode "experiement" in a program structure? for engineering, its basically simulation compared to known requirements... whats so hard about that?

the only real challenge is encompassing the diversity of all aspects, but like anything else, we always go "thats too much" and don't even try.. (until someone says 'lets go to the moon)

Wiki says the nearest is Aranuka (12 miles off)

It might be possible to find an island on a lake on the equator (if nobody is fussed about the volcano/coral reef stuff). Funnily enough, CR4 member Vulcan will probably know of a lake on an island in a lake on an island. Don't think it's on the equator, but it's a funny bit of trivia. I think it was even called Vulcan Point, but I haven't checked. Anyway, there's no point anyone running to hide on an atoll, it won't be there in a few years.

we have some of the same problems, didn't loan 'em out, but the original inhabitants REALLY shouldn't want 'em back - but do.

And I fear the island paradise they remember is under at least two 15,000 ft runways and last count about 5,000 troops; we are improving it against the time you folks want it back. I spent some time there, I'd be happy to give it back - really.

Lets give 'em another, got plenty out in the Marshall chain.

Actually you don't seem to think you loaned it out, more like having company - Brit customs meets you at the airplane, takes all your girlie mags and booze and smokes.

Re: What Reading List Would Enable the Rebuilding of Civilization?

05/17/2009 8:44 AM

I read through the thread out of interest since I couldn't contribute any books (I usually read science fiction, self-help, newpapers, Reader's Digest, etc.). Nothing I would consider would help rebuild civilization.

However, if anyone's interested:

Taal Lake is a lake on the island of Luzon, containing an island with a lake inside it (Crater Lake). This lake has another island in it called Vulcan Point (Americanized word, Bulcan is the Filipino term for volcano).

This picture from Wiki shows the lake within a lake clearly. Unfortunately, it's too high to show Vulcan Point. The next picture shows it. Interestingly, inside Vulcan Point is another lake, Yellow Lake. That one, I didn't know of until I searched for a picture.

regards,

Vulcan

Many thanks for coming back on that, Vulcan ! I didn't know if you'd pick up on it, but it's a fascinating bit of geographic 'trivia'. If I lived near there, I'd feel some strange compulsion to go see it, almost like Close Encounters !

I, myself, have only seen Taal Lake from a viewing platform about three to five kilometers from the lake's shore. It's a beautiful sight. Hopefully, I can get a chance to get closer. It certainly draws the tourists in, both local and foreign.

Maybe, when you do get to visit, I can land my starship nearby.

Vulcan

It needs to be something unclaimed, nobody's teritorial waters, etc. I have a book on uninhabited islands and atolls but it isnt comprehensive, we could even do in shallows, Who ever does it, they will contested if they try todo it as an independant country and what happens 1000miles from nowhere dies with the witness's. Do you realize you can't just do an independant launch it has to be cleared with a central clearinghouse in switzerland.

That last sentence lost me a bit

How about re-claiming a sinking atoll ? Float out lots of concrete to form a nice base (bit like mulberry harbours), sink it, build it up to 20 meters or so, then landscape it. Getting your own jack up rig is possible, but would be pricey, and lacks a certain 'natural' feel. I think some dude still has Sealand, but he's a bit to close to Essex and the possibility of chavs on rafts. My preference would be for something like Stromberg had.

Del's much better placed to tell you about chavs, just don't ask him about Burberry harbour. Bit like Mulberry, but being chav-built it was placed on Southend beach.

So many stunning hits on the web!

I am swamped, haven't gotten to the specifics but think I'm getting gist.

Hit a couple of telling newspaper articles that helped - learned one thing, now wonder about another:

After reading some of the local press - do you actually translate into American in your head, do you "think" in American, or do you have to get out the dictionary?

And we have chavs - just not so well organized and in more flavors

It's all down to the diction really. On-line help is good, though having hard copy always helps. I think I saw an oxymoron in that quote, but I dare not elaborate.

Yes that woul do. About 30 years ago I read an article how if an electical charge was applied in the ocean a coral like cement forms and eventually a full structure can be formed this way, with just a trickle of electricity a wind mill and a lot of wire mesh.

Back in the late '70's, early '80's, there was a group out of one of the Texas universities doing a lot of research in this technique. I used to have a lot of published information on this, but, unfortunately, I lost my library to mildew when I sailed off for the tropics a few years back...

Hi,

"you have to form alliances": only communities of 30 to 300 persons survived in early hunter-gatherer communities, but linked to their neighbours in alliances.

"The medievals knew about survival": any of the former times had their problems and how to survive in chaotic times.

"understanding that in reality our society will rot at the core until we fall apart": I think this will come sooner or more likely later. And if so, there will be ample of land available: nobody will take the risk to work on the land until foragers come and harvest what you cannot protect. You can start a new civilisation: buy a plot where this is cheap and start a new community. I have seen some trials but none really thriving and blossoming.

Above or below sea-level, Antarctica, space: good for fantasy-writers.

"good for fantasy-writers" oh come on, they said that about going to the moon, and we did that in the 60's. Its this attitude that keeps us from doing anything great anymore. Rhabe, maybe europe is doing big engineering projects, but I don't see it in the U.S. and humanity needs to regularly dream the imposible, so we can acheive the improbable. Lynn

If we start now we can create hold-out communities, that are profitable, like the monks in the inthe middle age's

Re: What Reading List Would Enable the Rebuilding of Civilization?

05/13/2009 5:33 PM

As far as Equatorial places for retreat and revival, a friend of mine says 50 miles off Ecuador the winds are near nothing, so it is a valuable place for eventual Space Elevator drop, construction.

I struggle now with the Babel Tower Problem, that we cannot adequately address to any meaningful solution without something more than a Reading List. Years ago in a book about Filmmaking, I think called Experimental Film, the swirl of electronic signals carrying information, new to humanity, was named the Noosphere.

It is one thing to make a Reading List, and another for that to be available.

In essence though I originally asked what list would enable the Rebuilding of Civilization, Civilization is in a constant state of building as a reality.

In my own life I have had decades where I seemed to have forgotten what I knew, learned something new, and then been setback, by what I apparently forgot.

Our list then is really charged to be "living", and as much for "building" -if not more, than for rebuilding.

Redundancy for critical systems is standard on aircraft.

They even carried sliderules on Apollo 13, for instance.

If we make a great list of really important books, recordings, and videos, to affect what we want, both the building and the rebuilding, we have to put it in the right places.

For a cache of books, and other semi delicate stuff, dry caves seem to be recommended.

What good is this place if you fear to tell everybody where it is?

We probably could build a satellite that would live for a long time and beam to a solar powered book and video receiver for a longtime, if we wanted to.

There are Hightech and Lowtech solutions to problems, and electronic books loaded, and capable of receiving the foundational knowledge that gives us tools to make civilization in the desert, or in the jungle, make sense when confronting loses due to The Babel Tower Effect, not possible to overcome with the written word, in some cases.

So then the thing to do is to make a list, put what is on the list in a number of safe places, put it on and in Kindles, or Power Books, and also have it put in orbit and beaming down to us.

This may be the best way to both build, while offering some hope of quick rebuilding, should the Apocalyptic Riot come to pass.

I like the space-elevator idea and have read books on the subject, but the most promising I have been able to come up with is a string of tethered blimps, Aerostats, up to aprx. 120,000 feet, and to use this as a launch platform with a linear acelerator hanging straight down vertically from the top end. Its the ultimate idea to my wind turbine patent.

This kind of thing seems relevant. The main problem of knowledge stores is too much information. We already have a situation where everyone and their dog can upland information. If the 'big one' happens, and a person could access all that stuff, would they have time to sift it all for reliable information? I'm going to be pretty pissed off if I were to eventually discover I'd sown corn at the wrong time of year, just because completeanduttercrap.com, and a million others sites, had stashed useless info.

Over here tiny farmers rely on The Farmers Almanac

And I strongly suspect in case of apocolypse the interweb will take a big hit, but perhaps instead of the movie theme where one finally "finds" a shortwave and learns to run it; the future involves "finding" internet nexus and starting the power plants?
