Liar, Liar, Pants on Fire

06/07/2009 4:26 PM

Is it possible in this Internet/Google/Wiki day and age - that we can not know something as common to us all as the origin of the most popular child's taunt?

And before the mail comes pouring in - I did want to ask - IS this taunt common to all children?

So wade in with votes:

Grew up with it

Didn't grow up with it

And especially important - where does it come from and how does it end - I've found three different second stanzas.

The gate in the wall was not the issue of His teaching about attachment to material things that prevents people from recognizing and obeying God's Messenger.

Nitpicking the grammar makes you lose sight of the intention of the message.

A camel through a skinny people gate or a rope through a sewing needle's eye is the same when considering the burden of attachment to worldly things when the goal is preparation for rebirth in the afterlife. Heaven is nearness to God. Hell is remoteness.

You can say you love God but in reality you love your wealth, power and control and would kill his messenger before giving it up.

So "Liar, Liar, Pants on fire" fits here very well.

Calm calm...
ER is merely point out some facts.
She isn't gainsaying the 'message' at all.
You should curb your religious zeal...no one is trying to stop you having your beliefs.

All the religious texts are marks on paper, wood or stone (gazelle skin, I've just read your later post which seems far more lucid), written, re-written, interpreted and translated by man.
You should accept that simple fact and move on.
You are welcomed to impart as much significance as you wish to these texts, as indeed am I.

"Muslims' insistance that the Qu'ran is true only in the original"

That is a good one! and fits this thread.

There is no original Quran. There were Qurans that had variations and resulting bloodbaths over whose was correct.

In the 7th century 7 copies on gazelle skin were made by Caliph Usman ibn Affan to provide a standard Quran for the Islamic world. The accuracy of the copies was due, in part, to each letter having a numerical value so that each word, sentence, line of text, paragraph and page could be verified by a sumcheck. Other copies were painstakingly made in later times.

In August of 2008 I saw the remaining one of the 7. It had been bloodied when Othman was killed. You can see the blood in the binding. Amir Timur (Tamerlane) brought it to His domain in Samarqand to bring unity to his people.

There was also hair of Muhammad and many ancient sacred works and artifacts in the same building.

The fate of the rich was due to their attachment or detachment to their possessions and position. We can get the "love of money is the root of evil" from this. (Greed.)

The novice copier knowing the methods of accurate copying would have considered that the originals were done the same way.

Today the Bible is written in many strange ways and since there is no central authority in Christianity everyone can run about yelling "Liar, Liar, Pants on Fire" to each other.

Hello kudukdweller,

Take no insult from what I say OK?

I think your post is really interesting. I am not Muslim or anything else. Not a believer at all. I take your 'fact' as such and I never knew about each letter having a number designated to it.

As you point out the 'Bible' has so many versions, and each sentence can mean whatever you read into it! A complete load of rubbish trying to understand it. Perhaps this is why Christianity is less and less popular? Nothing can be checked and each new published copy can be different from the next previous version. Putting numbers to each letter means at least a total sentence must amount to a previously known figure!

Congrats and thanks for the knowledge.

Hi Baby Bear,

Bill Maher and his Religulous movie was interesting.

We can sort out a lie or error in transcriptions by using a method like the ancients used.

Actually the "Jews" used the numerical checks for that purpose long before. Hebrew and Arabic are Semitic languages. Semitic languages include ancient Egyptian, Hebrew, and Aramaic, as well as the great Nigerian language Hausa. The Hebrew script is actually Aramaic.

The English alphabet (Roman) doesn't have a number association like thier ABJaD reckoning.

Now we can do accuracy checks using the ASCII computer code which goes well beyond our letters and numbers.

Thanks for the reply post my friend.

Does the use of the ASCII refer to christian and Muslim religions?

Computer codes for font characters.

If my "A" key on my keyboard doesn't work I can hold down the ALT key and type 65 and when I release the ALT key "A" will appear. For "a" I poke ALT 97.

Re: Liar, Liar, Pants on Fire

Well, there were about 3 different references !

The 'go for an English' bit was about a hilarious TV sketch; British Asian comedy, sending up the somewhat shameful manner in which (white) Brits often behave. Most Brits here will have had the misfortune to witness pissed-up young blokes in an Indian Restaurant. Having a few beers and 'going for a curry' is pretty normal, but there are a few jerks about. Much better now than it used to be (people appreciate the fantastic cuisine & subtlety of flavours, rather than swilling 20 pints of lager and trying to out-do each other on the hottest dish available). Comedy like that works pretty good for nudging people into better behaviour/understanding. It's also a damn funny sketch !

Having diverted to truth (oh, the shame !), I've forgot what else I was going to clarify (not that it was likely to have been clear in my head to start with ).

Technicolour yawns are always better done in a kneeling position. If you're sitting down, you risk the dreaded auto-syphon effect

I could walk like an Egyptian, but it might confuse some people

I'm sure Emybog Harris sung that. You know, 'Hair, there, and everywhere' .

Actually, I made that up, but the song was inspired by just such a problem in the 'maharishi days'. One of the lesser known stories is that John Lennon was visiting Bath one day - having asked where he could clean up one morning, and being in a somewhat 'fuzzy' state of mind, he took a wrong turning at the top of the stairs - and he came up with the tune that's now known as 'Ticket to Ride'. Well, he'd been looking at the bus ticket, but 'Bath' wasn't printed on it. It was an all day ticket that, valid on all routes, simply said "Ticket to Ride". To cut a long story short, it was the bathing chaos + literally taking his hair all over the place that inspired two great songs. It could never have happened if he hadn't been stoned and wanting a bath. Penny Lane/Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da, they all have similar explanations.......

My imprecision: I meant in the original language.

I was told that this was to avoid translation errors. Of course, it doesn't remove copy errors or widely varying interpretations.

For the record, I'm not Muslim and am not seeking to change anyone's mind about what they believe. Thank you for the interesting info about the sumcheck copy method; I didn't know that. Could that be the origin of numerology - yet another misinterpretation of something only dimly understood by those not using it?

Your comments on materialism (mammon) vs. God are the lesson I drew from the parable of camels and needles; and actually it doesn't matter if it's gates and camels, or camel hair rope and needles, the message is the same.

My comments on the perils of taking anything written down by any man (or these days woman) as absolute truth hold for all of human's written records. No bias implied or intended. It seems that you agree in principle. your point about the lack of a central copy of the Bible is well made - and is why the concept of it being considered absolute truth really frightens me.

That's to Del for his rational post. I'll not comment on this bit any more. What was this thread callled again??

PS: the bit about the novice copier is a joke - and like most tall tale jokes relies on a bit of poetic licence in the set up. Did the "western" monks know about the "eastern" check sum method?

Sorry about that, gang- I have this talent that if I mention politics or religion- no matter how innocently- I set off flame wars.

That's just the version of the story I heard from this jewish kid back when I worked construction. Funny name- Yeshua bar Iosef, or something like that. . . Yeah, he was a carpenter- learned from his dad- why do you ask?

Hello edigan,

I am not sure if you know the origin of this taunt? Here is the poem from which the taunt came.:

Origin In contrast, the origins of the phrase are not in question. It is a paraphrased version of the 1810 poem "The Liar" by William Blake, reprinted here in full.

Deceiver, dissembler

Your trousers are alight

From what pole or gallows

Shall they dangle in the night?

---------------------------------------- When I asked of your career

Why did you have to kick my rear

With that stinking lie of thine

Proclaiming that you owned a mine?

-----------------------------------------------

When you asked to borrow my stallion

To visit a nearby moored galleon

How could I ever know that you

Intended to turn him into glue?

-----------------------------------------------

What red devil of mendacity

Grips your soul with such tenacity?

Will one you cruelly shower with lies

Put a pistol ball between your eyes?

--------------------------------------------------

What infernal serpent

Has lent you his forked tongue?

From what pit of foul deceit

Are all these whoppers sprung?

---------------------------------------------

Deceiver, dissembler

Your trousers are alight

From what pole or gallows

Do they dangle in the night?

bb

Many rhymes are (supposedly) rooted in historical fact. eg Plague → "ring-a-ring-a roses" (oops, sorry ER ! Maybe I should compensate with ding-dong.......)

Maybe it's just that kids simply like rhyming words as they grow up and learn the words of communication. Seeing patterns is built into human brains, and audio patterns have an appeal that follows us through life. Absurd images (pants on fire !) always attract kids, and again, using such nonsense-imagry is used by many adults to memorise stuff like lists.

It be playground gibberish. Fun, plain and simple. That's why such rhymes and chants are easily altered and adapted as they spread around. kids are constantly told not to lie (in the good old days, anyway), so it's inevitable that such concepts enter their play. There's another variant of the chant here.

I grew up in the early 1950's in Texas and it is a common phrase there.

I'm always amazed that threads like this produce so many posts. Is it that engineering types are just waiting to fly from their cages to the freedom of trivial pursuit.

There really is only so much you can say about breaking a bathtub. But poetry now, well, we can go on with that forever...

The Bathtub Destruction question, well, as edignan knows I have admitted my most silly question.

There it sits for all to see.

The Potato Cannon shot by the Astronaut from the Space Station Crows Nest at the oncoming Asteroid.

Yes, I admit to true all out silliness on occasion. It is no wonder I did write some for a cartoon.

What are they doing over there in the bathtub thread?

They should bathe it with liquid nitrogen and hit it with a hammer.

They could build a fire under it and then dump ice water on it too.

I cracked a cast iron skillet that way.

Since it is not recommended when doing renovations to build fires, Air Products is now going to sell LiquidNitrogen Cast Iron Bathtub Crack kits, suitable for use by any member of the family.

Air Products will not sell Sledge Hammers, nor endorse the use of Sledge hammers for cast iron bathtub destruction, because Sledge Hammers are simply not part of their product line.

P.S. I am lying. Air Products has no kit for cast iron bathtub destruction that I know of. In point of fact, when faced with the job of destroying a cast iron tube, it is typically done with a sledge hammer. Swing first at the highest edges, that are the weakest parts, and work your way down. Safety glasses are recommended.

When faced with the job of getting an old fiberglass tube, or shower stall out. A Sawsall and a crowbar are the preferred tools.

That will be enough!

25 pages of bath drivel is entirely enough - lets not have it dribbling over on other threads.

I'll ask you nicely to just move along if that's what you wish to discuss - the original thread is still out there and containment is important with this sort of thing, can't be letting it wash all over.

There's a shaggy dog story that is a prelude to this, the punch line. It involves Roy Rogers. You can make your own story up. Just be sure to mention a big cat and Roy's new boots that got chewed up.
