Pressure Vessel - Flange Thickness Calculation

06/08/2009 6:48 AM

How to calculate Body flange thickness of a packed bed pressure vessel used for water treatment application at normal temperature of 25-35degree centigrade and operating pressure of 3.5kg/cm2?

From first principles, the first thing to do, Boss, is to state the diameter of the flange and the materials from which it, and the bolts, are made.

You'll also need the elastic moduli of these materials, and their yield points.

Then, you need to take a theoretical section at the flange, and do a force balance on the whole system at that section.

However, at 50lb/sqin the force burden is not going to be great, and you might want to look at PN10 flanges or something like that as a standard, and apply that. It depends largely on the pressure rating of the pipe connected to it, really.

Don't bother calculating - just refer to the pressure-temperature charts and use a standard flange.
