Asparagus and Urine

07/24/2009 2:55 AM

Why does asparagus yield up such a strong smell when exiting the body ? Is there a connection between this and it's use as a shark deterrent ? Can asparagus be combined with any other food to help avoid post-dining embarrassment ? I've asked around, but most people either look at me rather oddly or just giggle. If anyone would share their experience I'd feel much relieved.

You're telling me that whacking a Shark with a stick of Asparagus will deter him...
And I thought those guys were tough...
Personally, as Asparagus is sooo expensive over here, I've never eaten enough to notice the effect...mind you my cat pee is pretty strong stuff.

I liked that Kris.

Here is one I heard just the other day.

Father shark and son shark are having a swim. They spot a group of humans and father shark says to son:

"We will now swim up to them, half the fin out of water and circle for a while. We'll meet back here."

Done.

Once back father shark says:

"Now we will do the same thing but have our fin sticking fully out of the water, wriggle a bit more this time too, we'll meet back here son."

Done.

Now the father says:

"Lets go and get them and have our deserved feed", where to the son replies, "but we could have done that half an hour ago dad."

Dad replies: "son, they taste much better after getting rid of all that shit in them"

Moral: if you have a smelly substance in you, don't waste it on sharks, they know what they are doing, Ky.

Why does asparagus yield up such a strong smell when exiting the body

Well, he mentions the technological process to obtain the effect. I think that what he meant was: Eat a lot of asparagus before diving and let the nature take it's course (fear will contribute, too, to the accelerating of the processing).

I don't want to enter the technicalities but, like spinach, the asparagus besides yielding up such a strong smell when exiting the body will lend to the outcome a greenish color

Re: Asparagus and smell.

Asparagus is high in sulphur . Like beans, it also contains sugars that produce a great deal of gas when digested by bacteria within the human gut , hence the highly entertaining value it provides several hours after being ingested . The good thing about it for pranksters is that after ingestion, it allows you to have some very fragrant fun while saving you money on stinkbombs at the same time .

Just imagine how much fun you could have on a diet of beans, asparagus, cabbage, Brussels sprouts and onions . Add to that some other strong smelling foods such as liver and Limburger cheese , and you can just imagine how popular you'll be with everyone around you .

You could try drinking lots of probiotics drinks such as Yakult . Researchers in Japan claim, and I kid you not, that regularly consuming such drinks will make your farts smell nicer . If that is the case, yoghurt may also help. I can't help but wonder what their research methodology was, and how they arrived at such a conclusion . I wonder if they actually used human volunteers to analyze the before and after effects of the study .

And if you're wondering how come I seem to be so familiar with the subject, it's because one of my favorite methods of interrogating captured rebels is to lock several of them up in an airtight room and feed them a diet rich in such strong-smelling flatus-inducing foodstuffs, and then sit back and enjoy the fun . It's amazing how quickly even the most hardcore of them will breakdown and cooperate after receiving such treatment .

Anyway, I guess by now that everyone knows that I really hate attending the Imperial officers' staff meeting. They're a real bunch of gasbags (pun fully intended).

Perhaps I should clarify that I was asking for a friend - that was my reaction. Aghast at my insensitivity, I decided to ask and see what the general state of knowledge was. The promise of 3 Euros for asking was a bit of an inducement, but being of a generous nature I'm going to ask that it be sent to some good cause. It would be unseemly of me to let my name become public in an act of generosity, but if my bashful friend does not come hither with more information I may be compelled to reveal more. The problem is that I don't know if Samphire grows in California. I could get my hands on some, but the nearest I get to sharks is the occasional Basking Shark reported in the press and seeing someone hook a Dogfish......

English Rose,

as I recall, Samphire is a very English vegetable that grows in Salty marshes -or just near the sea. Again a recollection it can be cooked until it is useless as a food but if lightly cooked and served with butter and black pepper it is delicious.

This little addition to England is named Samphire Hoe;

Sounds better than 'Spoil Tip' (Channel Tunnel) - they almost certainly took the name from the plant. I wouldn't recognize Samphire if it if it bit me, but I must investigate this possibility of free food sometime - your description sounds rather tasty.

more of topic/off-topic.

coming off the farm, where the dairy cows would pasture.....(along with where the antelope and buffalo roam.)

One had to be careful not to pasture these cows where wild leeks grew (relative of the onion.) in woodlands.

If the dairy cows would eat the leaks, (and the cows love leeks) it would effect the milk, which you could taste.. The milk is still good, and still could be shipped. where the milk all would be degassed. (All milk is degassed, basically flowed under vacuum into a type of cyclone to pull these gases out).

And even more of you are what you eat...........

When I was about 12, I ate an abnormal amount of garlic......my dad would complain when we worked together, he hated garlic, and even my sweat would reminded him of it. I noticed it was also very good mosquito repellant.

Hi phoenix,

Many people hate garlic because of its smell but it has very good medicinal value. It de congests your lung and breathing system, it lowers your bad cholehester it creates resistance to cold, it cleanse your bowl.

In order to avoid bad smell from mouth it is suggested to swallow with water, 1 or 2 bulbs cut in small pieces before lunch or dinner. Here in India garlic paste is extensively used in cooking.

I don't think anybody's completely sure. I favor the methyl mercaptan (skunk) explanation myself. But, I consider it a good kidney function test; you can time it within an hour.

Can asparagus be combined with any other food to help avoid post-dining embarrassment ?

If it is used as shark deterrent, wouldn't have a stronger effect on us, the smaller fish? ...Talking about post-dining embarrassment...

Excellent link, thank you Moose .

"Experts believe that those with a certain gene produce a digestive enzyme which breaks down the asparagus into various chemical compounds. One of those compounds is called methyl mercaptan, which is the same chemical which gives a skunk its defensive smell"

It sounds as though there's still doubt over the exact mechanism of odour production/detection. I shall try to be as diplomatic a possible in telling my friend that he's a sort of human skunk ! I'm sure ****** will see the funny side - there's almost a physical resemblance as well - and he'll relish the opportunity to inform friends of his marvelous chemical quirk. I can't giggle too much since I'm fairly sure that I'm also blessed, though it's been a long time since I had asparagus and I can't quite remember. I shall look for some asparagus next time I go shopping and report back. This could be an interesting weekend !

Why don't you two grow up and quit smelling each others urine.

"Can asparagus be combined with any other food to help avoid post-dining embarrassment ? ... I'd feel much relieved."

First of all, there's no embarrassment if you don't pee your pants. Second, to avoid the embarrassment, drink plenty of alcohol. Once drunk, you won't care what anybody thinks. It's best not to feel relieved outside the restroom.

That's an excellent solution, though I'll have to figure out what to do with the Hush Puppies the next day

Actually, there is a genetic basis for the odor in some people. A significant segment of the population (including myself) lack an enzyme to break down one of the sulfur-containing amino acids found in asparagus in high concentrations. The partially-rendered metabolite passes thru the kidneys and is easily volatinized. Now here's a question for you one and all... What evolutionary advantage does lack/posession of this enzyme confer upon the populace? Perhaps helping a male mark his territory?

Is that the nature of the 'problem' ?

" Because many people claim that, regardless of asparagus consumption, their urine does not smell, there are multiple theories regarding that as well. The first claims that everyone's urine is in fact affected by asparagus, but only about half of the population have the specific gene that is required to smell the change. On the other hand, the second theory states that only half of the world's population has the gene that's required to break down the compounds found in asparagus and, if the body doesn't break them down, no smell is emitted"

Either way, you pose an interesting question in relation to evolution, 'marking', and pheromones.....perfumes are traditionally based on some odd substances. Might there even be some element of social conditioning in our reaction to various odours ?

That sulfur-containing amino acid would be "asparagine", first extracted from asparagus as you might have guessed.

Is this enzyme business also the reason that some people can smell the astringent pong that is emitted by some potato(e)s when you cut in to them, and others either cannot, or just ignore the smell? To me, the affected spuds also taste like they smell and I once thought it was due to attack by eelworm, but non holey taters also can exhibit the same waft.

Doctor : "Are you regular?"

Patient : "Yes, like clockwork - 7a.m. every morning"

Doctor : "Well what's the problem then?"

Patient : " I don't wake up until 7:15"

Which reminds me of a true story.

Back in the glory days of F1 at Watkins Glen, at the inaugural race at the newly redesigned race course and yet to be updated peripheral facilities, early 70's, I watched as a radio reporter interviewed, live on the air and broadcast around the track PA system, a prominent French driver. The usual questions were asked and answered smoothly and eloquently in his native accent. Nearing the end of the interview, the reporter asked "And if you were to give a word of advice to any upcoming drivers interested in racing in Formula 1, what would that be?" After a very short moment of thought he replied, "Never take a $+!^ at a race track!".
