In the end this wont matter as they plan to change the entire Queens English to be more like German or maybe Dutch, which was totally changed in the 1950s to remove complicate spelling, for ease of use across the EU. So I am guessing th may be one of the sounds on the way out, sort of like eau. So uin the future the English will say mats or even muts or something. In an age where, increasingly, children (even the better educated) are not thoroughly taught when it comes to expressing themselves in English—and with the influence of Africa-derived English pigeon speak in the learning culture—to use the forms of "math(ematics) properly and with understanding (of collective singularity) can be quite confounding.

So the coinage, maths, provides a simplified way to ensure that number matches up grammatically as it should in sentences. So, in a sense, the error derives from attempting not to make an error. In other cases (more in line with the African thing), it probably also occurs that "maths" comes about (again, sort of cleverly) by the abbreviation/transition: mathematics → mathematics → maths...again a proper coinage of sorts.

In either case, a rational justification which "follows the rules" can be made for well-meaning use of the misnomer. It is up the more educated listener, then, to make the necessary silent mental translation...taking the apparent (but inconsequential) mistake with a grain of salt. If the errant speaker progresses in education, he or she will eventually make the jump to standard usage—only somewhat later in life than his/her forebears in prior generations.

You put forth a confused explanation of (I think) Maths/Math, when neither necessitates any kind of explanation whatsoever.

All that is necessary is to 'accept' the current prevailing idioms and usage. It matters not one 'jot' that this word has at least two different spellings.

1 + 1=2. That is the same the world over.

Because your comment merely recapitulates the basic conclusion I already drew leads my to assure you: no insult taken, intended or not . (Exercise your "current prevailing" syntax skills on that one. )
