How long is this bow which I've just finished?
Cherry belly, Ash back, Waterbuffalo nocks.
A Gooz card to the nearest

You're the closest so far.
I'll post a full draw pic tomorrow (on a tiller stick so you can't see it against a person, or cat)

6 feet, or 72", whichever is nearest, on account of it's long.

Actually - assuming it's not a scale model - going by the grip dimensions - and assuming symmetry about the nock - seems to be 83"

Looking at the weapon, it appears to be a simple longbow after the English pattern, which would certainly be in keeping with your fondness for this style. So, I would guess between 1.8 and 2 meters. Assuming of course that it is full-sized and usable. Beautiful weapon, BTW.

Re: Friday Picture Quiz Question

Taking a wild guess based on the image clarity at the far tip versus near tip, I'll bid 60" unloaded.

But knowing most people's desire to trick people with an unreferenced image, I would not be surprised if you were contracted by Aardman studios to fabricate a miniature bow for a new Wallace and Grommit show and this was actually only 3" long unloaded.

I just checked the conversion, and my guess 139 cm comes to 54.72 inches... damn that's close to your guess! at 54.75. I hope we duke it out over the .03 inches, ha ha

... something keeps saying to me "139 cm".. I almost said "39" and lost the one, but that's unlikely for a bow size It's just a glitch in my wormhole. Nobody's perfect.

Based on the diameter of the shadow, multiplied times the second derivative of the string tension, then diagonalized in a classic Henry III-1/2 determinant, I conclude 180 cm +/- 1 thingybob. As pictured, of course.

I'll go way out on a limb here and guess that it's around 13cm long sitting on a textured surface.

Taking the hand piece to about 8" long, and looking at it, I make it about 9 hand pieces long, that makes it 8 x 9 = 72 inches. Being a cat I suppose you will have to stand on a box to fire it? Ummmmmm are your arms long enough?

Given the coarseness of the background and the unclear picture which you get if you use a digital camera on tiny objects I stick with the miniature model and only give it 1" or 25.4 mm or both.

My smallest was about the same size for a Crossbow, which could propel picture frame nails into the environment.

I too went to that and assuming the back ground to be the normal those laminates, it rather turns out to be around 3/4 of my screen size makin it say 8" or so.

But when I tried to look at the string and its pattern, than it is nearer to 3 ft, but at that the backbround does not look nice.

At the center of the bow, I could see the node and could not see any further nodes on either side of the central one. The bamboo piece should be a shoot between three consecutive nodes. So could be 2' or 3' the maximum...

Did you hear that Pernell Roberts has died, aged 81. Another Gooz card for the one who can remember* his character's name in the show whose theme tune Randell was humming.

He wasn't Hoss, he wasn't Joe.....

And bizarrely, I was reading "The Client" at the weekend and the show, and all three sons are mentioned in that. Coincidence or time for the Twilight Zone...?

His name was Lorne Green. He also played Adama on the original Battlestar Galactica.

The show you have been talking about was called "Bonanza", which ran from 1959 to 1973. Lorne Green played Ben Cartwright. His sons were played by Parnell Roberts as Adam Cartwright, Dan Blocker as Eric "Hoss" Cartwright, and Michael Landon as Joseph "Little Joe" Cartwright. It was set on a ranch called the Ponderosa in the California territory during the late 19th century.

Charming show. They don't make 'em like that any more.

Adam is correct.

Bonanza was the first television program to be shown in color in the states.

He hated the program, that's why he always wore black(in protest to them not letting him out of his contract).

He went on to play "Trapper John" ,as a spin off from "M.A.S.H.".

Any more questions?

Re: Another pic...

1820mm

How do I get to that?

Well, if you devide1820mm by 4 you get 455mm. That translates to being 1 fourth of what the size of it is on my screen. Now I take a good chance at what the diameter of the grip bit is, which should be about 60mm and I subtract that from 455mm = 395mm. Your with me?

From that I subtract 30 days (now 'days', don't you start with the apple and oranges!!), which are wasted anyway, but could then make up (or reduce it to a full year) like in 395-30=365.

Makes real sense or what?

1820mm just under six foot.

BTW

Still have not gone and talked to the "owners" of the stand of black bamboo. Maybe over the weekend, its just around the corner really. You'll know when I'll post some pics of it any way.

Nice work Mate, very nice work, Ky.

The far end of the bow seem shorter than the nearest part, but I don't know if this is an illusion? and looking at the resent post and not knowing how big a cats paw is, and assuming that you are a big TOM? this would add an extra hand piece? so 8 x 10 is 80 inches or 6ft 8in?

The tiller is a tad out, the right limb could do to bend more at the tip end.
This pic is a bit better as it's taken in daylight.

It's just manually pulled back onto the notches to allow you to step back and look at the 'tiller' (curvature) of the bow, to let it back down the string is just pulled out of the groove and slowly let down.
Crossbow trigger mechanisms are another kettle of fish, there is one drawn in one of my blogs here or here.

Ok - if that is by convention the string is ~ 63 1/4" so one would expect 3/4" +~ 2 " or 66" free length. 1646.4 mm

Hmmm....

arc length =2piR(C/360)

where:

For those guys who think it's 3" Here's a more detailed shot of nock and string.

If the bow was 3" long I dread to think who or what made that string and how small is that nock.
Maybe a Wizard did it...

Ok, my cat Suzuki insists that I take another paw swipe at this. He thinks this is 33" long. So that's our official guess. My drowsy cat, Zorro, noticed that its Saturday already for you Del. So I shouldn't disturb you, and let you sleep. Yawn

OK, a cross-bow instead of an English long bow. Assume the bolt to be about 10", each arm about the same, so 20", give or take a meter.

Second attempt:

Where a range was given, I've taken it as one result equal to the arithmetic mean of the extrema.

Where two distinct answers were given (as in 3" or 60"), I've included both guesses.

I've omitted results expressed in unknown units of measure (e.g. "squirrel hands").

What's it for?
I made it to see how Cherry and Ash stand up together as a combination, Cherry is good in compression but poor in tension, Ash good in tension but not so good in compression.
I'm going to make a full sized version, but it gave me something to timker with when it's too cold to work outside.
I shall make a scale arrow and see if it will penetrate a beer can...any bets?
(I reckon it will)
It pulls 3lb at 8" draw

An 8" draw would put a correctly proportioned bowstave length at 32".But, judging from the picture, yours is much shorter.

Re: Friday Picture Quiz Question

Dunno where you get your equation from.
You can see from the pic of it at full draw it looks about right.
As a rule of thumb a bow will be at least as long as twice the draw length, but not as much longer as you suggest, which is 4 times the draw length....
A typical medieval style Yew longbow would be 72" or a bit over and would draw to at least 30"-32". Modern draw tends to be nearer 28"
You can take some measurements of this pic if you don't believe me!
That's pulling 90 lb at about 31.5" but I don't think I've got it back the last inch.

Re: Friday Picture Quiz Question

Exactly. My information tells me that a modern longbow will be 72" in length with a 28" draw. If the required draw is shorter or longer then, the length of the bowstave will be shortened or lengthened by a factor of two for every inch of draw that is added or taken away.

Your last comment suggested that the draw was only 8" so.....

Good-looking bow there, Del.

Re: Friday Picture Quiz Question

02/13/2010 5:33 PM

There seems to be some confusion.
The bow in the quiz question is a scale model of an 'American Flatbow' style bow approx scale 1 : 3.5
It is not a longbow.
It is correctly proportioned.

In all the quiz pictures (except the one with the cat) there is deliberately nothing for reference, (the tiller stick, is of course also made to scale).

The pictures with me in ( and the primitive flat bow on a full sized tillering rig) are there to illustrate the proportions of different bow styles.

Have a nice day.....Can I help anybody,pleeeeeeeeze.

No, no, after you old chap. Sorry, What ? "! Sorry". You're the sorriest goddam people I ever met !

{ for non Brits : "sorry" = Britspeak for "you stupid plank, whatever just occurred is entirely your fault. I'll mutter this platitude in order to be condescending and put you in your proper place, ie beneath me.}

Out of interest (or not) bow of a flatter cross section gets much closer to the length=2xDraw. (or beyond it)

"Correctly proportioned" depends on the style of bow. I don't wish to take umbrage, but it is a subject I know about as I actually make these things.
Here's a couple of short bows with relatively long draw which I've made. Primitive and Asiatic recurve styles respectively.
