As far as I know, here's a new one... A company by the name of ClickSOR has come up with a whole new business plan: infect people's computers with a virus (through the use of a trojan) that changes the ads on your web pages to ads their customers want you to see.
I first became aware of this when I made a visit to CR4. I was surprised to see that CR4 was now advertising online dating, credit reports, and "Win a puppy" ads! However, my typical malware scanning software didn't seem to find anything wrong. Additionally, when I tried to update my virus scanning software, I was told that there were no updates to be had. At this point, I decided to go to them that should know the most about my computer, Microsoft.
Microsoft offers an online scanning tool, which is up-to-date and very thorough--takes about two hours to run. Sure enough, it found the viruses placed on my computer by the ClickSOR company. It also found something called "ransom" ware. This was a virus checker program that initially infected my computer with several viruses, which it then detected, and told me their software could remove it for just $49.99. Furthermore, after getting rid of these infections, I found a whole bunch of update files, stacked up, and ready for downloading to my scanner software.
So is this a trend? Is this the future of advertising on the net? And who deemed infection as an ethical business practice?
I thought you all should know that this is going on out there. I really don't know who to contact to report what I consider a crime. Needless to say that I'd really like to see these guys swinging from the limb of a very tall tree.
What do you think???
