Are Our Engineers Clever?

04/27/2010 5:00 AM

I think Ive posted this link before.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=khyZI3RK2lE

the weapon was designed by clever engineers

as was the Titanic. (at the time it was state of the art)

K19

Challenger. That bridge in america that was destroyed by the wind,

and i am sure we could all come up with lots more designs that really should never of seen the light of day

The first jet passenger plane the Comet ( it had square windows, and fell apart because cracks appeared at the corner of the windows)

I am not suggesting all engineers are not very good, But there is an awfull lot that are really bad, But clever

Dear Pete,

Thanks for starting a size less, timeless, endless and directionless 'Brainstorming Session' which has grown feet, wings and all other means to move in all possible directions and is losing its worthiness and becoming meaningless.

Regards.

I think this thread should have been named "Clever Ideas?" with the premise that readers respond with their favorite clever ideas that were not-so-clever in hindsight (I nominate this thread). There were, are, and will be, clever ideas that:

die quickly because they deserve to.
grow for awhile before everyone realizes they were bad.
have been and always will be bad, but just won't die.
fade away even though good, because they were/are ahead of their time.
actually work well and become ubiquitous.
generate spectacular positive changes.

Bad ideas (and decisions) occur all the time and, despite the original self-loathing premise, many of them don't involve engineers.
