Boosting the Power in a Solar Panel Charging Battery

07/15/2010 8:57 AM

How can I boost the power in a battery charged by a solar panel set up? It can't sustain electric equipments as per rated output for required duration.

You can't. You just have to get a higher capacity battery.

Good Answer. One cannot get more energy out of a self contained system than what originally existed.

Now there might be a few small exceptions that should be brought up that may help. If this battery has already gone through too many cycles, the amount of energy that can be stored will be reduced over time. No battery works forever. But this will be valid only if the OP was originally able to meet his power requirements.

There is also an outside chance that the amount of light reaching the solar panels has diminished. This could be just a purely seasonal change or due to shading from plant growth.

But the OP cannot get any more energy than what gets stored daily.

It also maybe the solar panel does not have the capacity needed. Do to size, length of day or intensity of the sun light in your area. All are factors that need to be addressed. Will do no good to increase the capacity of the battery if the panel can not charge it fully. You may have that situation now that the battery is not being fully charged. I would first check the amount power needed for the duration you want your equipment to run. See if the battery has the capacity. Then check the output rating of you solar panel. You also didn't say if the equipments being ran off the solar panel during the day. That also needs to be accounted for.

Also see some of the previous discussions in this forum of battery capacity. An 80AH battery won't be able to provide 80 amps for 1 hour or 8 amps for 10 hours, etc. Just a straight comparison of the calculated total load vs. the specified amp-hour rating of the battery won't work.

You can make sure the solar array is pointed toward the Sun; i.e, the array surface should be perpendicular to the Sun's rays. Of course, this is only true for a brief period of time each day if the array is on a fixed mount.

You could use a motorized system to continuously point the array toward the Sun, or you could use a lens or reflector system that concentrates the light on the array for a wide range of Sun positions, or you could use multiple solar arrays so that, no mater where the Sun is, one is always producing near-peak current.

Sorry, it's not clear whether it's your solar panel or your battery which seems to be inadequate.

Also, we need details of the solar cell(s), the battery size and type, the load requirements etc etc..

The reason being is that my Crystal Ball is at the cleaners and polishers for maintenance....

I have used this simplified estimation.

Multiply all loads in a day by 1.7 to size the battery and charger system

There are many resources on the web to tell you how to set up a solar panel and what sun power is available in your area

Use a PVM to charge batterie(s) I like the MORNINGSTAR brand for smaller setups

Also check your power loss in your cable run.

Let me introduce to you the laws of thermodynamics.

The upshot is, there is no such thing as a free lunch. You can't get more power out than you put in, you can't even break even. There are ALWAYS losses in the system.

If you are using Lead Acid batteries and you NEVER charge them above about 13.4 volts, you get about 70% of their capacity at about 70% efficiency.

Charging them further/higher gives a higher capacity, but a lower efficiency!!!

Other battery types will probably give more of both....but be far more expensive to own...

LA Batteries, if maintained correctly, can give a very long life at a really cheap cost.......but over charging or over depletion of the capacity, will quickly kill them.....forever.....

The Royal Navy (and other Navies around the world) use batteries on subs that can be kept in a top condition for 50 years or more. Have seen many subs and are still in use....

thanks.i will modify and use lenses to concentrate the sun's radiations.

Unless your lens has a larger surface area than you PV collector, you will never gain anything. You may also loose power from over concentrating the light. You will also have to include a method to track the sun which will take energy from your solar assembly.
