Autumnal Equinox

09/22/2010 8:32 AM

Is it possible that the approaching equinox affects human behavioral characteristics such as the ability to express ones-self coherently?

Even the cheap stuff would do it. Just don't look at the face of the one who imbibes the liquid.

Re: Autumnal Equinox

I never thought about the affects of the change of season but I think you may be on to something!

Aside from coherent self expression for a moment, it certainly did affect the driving skills of many of the folks I encountered on my 68 mile commute home.

The traffic pattern for that time of day was completely upside down from the norm.

As far as a gauge on coherent self expression, never been a problem for the wifey, no matter the time of year, it is non-existent in our home.

I sort of doubt it. I know far too many people who lack coherency in all aspects during the whole year.

So at least for them its not a seasonal issue.

There could be something in this, but I'm sure it would be masked by the far greater effects on human behaviour caused by different time of day, day of the week (exponentially declining brain functions), time of the month, etc.

Cheerful Note

09/22/2010 5:06 PM

For all us north-dwellers, this equinox must mean we're half-way through autumn/fall, so that means only 4½ months away from next spring!

And there's Bonfire Night, and I've got a daughter getting wed in December, and there's Christmas, then there's snowdrops ...

The glass is more than half full .

(Sorry about you guys down-under ).

"this equinox must mean we're half-way through autumn/fall"

Did you always have trouble with basic astronomy, or are you just having trouble being coherent now, because we've just passed the equinox?

Re: Cheerful Note

?

Midsummer's day = middle of summer, yes?

Summer is ¼ year, = 3 months, yes?

Half of summer = 1½ months, yes?

End of summer = 1½ months after midsummer's day, yes?

Start of autumn = end of summer = 1½ months after midsummer's day, yes?

Autumn is ¼ year, = 3 months, yes?

Half of autumn= 1½ months, yes?

So, from midsummer to the middle of autumn (the equinox), we have half of summer + half of autumn. No?

Re: Cheerful Note

The equinox marks the first 'official' day of Autumn (per the astronomers who keep track of these things).

Midsummer marks the first day of Summer, at the Summer solstice.

/Don't blame me, I didn't invent the names or make the calendar.

//Anyway, here in the US 'Summer' is generally regarded at starting on Memorial day (near the end of May) and ending on Labor Day (near the beginning of September), with no regard to what the fine print on the calendar says or where the Sun is along the ecliptic.

The interlinking of physical external seasonal events, with internal spiritual and intellectual events affect us all to one degree or another.

If one has more difficulty expressing themselves coherently throughout their lives during the equinox then they may for one reason or another be more of a lunatic at that time of the year.

Otherwise there may be another pathological, pathenogenic reason for a diminished coherency. During some seasons I talk more than during other seasons, so the amount of speaking is to be considered.

"...be more of a lunatic at that time of the year."

The term 'lunatic' was unfortunate - this is madness brought on by the moons' influence, not the suns! See gaiatechnician's response. I also heard a copper say once that he thought things always got a bit crazier around full moon, so you knew you were going to be busy on those nights...

Inability to think properly at Equinox may be something to do with the change of day length, which is fastest around the equinox. That's likely to get anyone confused, especially in the more northernly zones.

Throw in the change from "Daylight Savings" to "Standard Time" and indeed, it's enough to put anyone off balance.

If your thesis is really that the moon is more important than the sun, you may well be a lunatic. Good luck with that.

Yes, certainly.

But not on this specific day. Now, next 3 months duration of night will be more and more. Thus, sexual expression of human beings will become more and more in-coherent for next 3 months. Don't you think so about yourself?

Re: Autumnal Equinox

Any influence from the autumnal equinox is dwarfed by the influence of the moon.

I used to take the bus to my girlfriends place every evening for over a year. Some of the freakiest human behavior i have ever seen took place under the full moon.

A couple of times it was cloudy and later on on the journey, the clouds would part for a second and you would see the full moon "ok, that explains it!"

(So its not like the wolfman where it has to shine on them to cause the odd behavior).

It was always guys acting strange. Perhaps it is some male menstrual cycle leftover from man the hunter times? Something that drives them out to hunt on moonlit nights?

Re: Autumnal Equinox

I suggest one do a statistical analysis of observations of the suspected correlation. I doubt that this will truly answer the question of cause and effect, but the beauty of statistical analysis is that one can model the analysis such that one can "prove" that the preferred conflicting answer is true. With slight adjustment to the basic model, one is then able to disprove the original thesis is wrong, and that the conflicting answer is, in fact, the correct answer.

Is this coherent?

The ancient gods and most of the initial civilizations that they created certainly had a strong focus on such things as the equinoxes, and planetary alignments. All their architecture and most of their ceremonies were planned around them. I'm not sure about the behavioural characteristics... unless you call a week long mating orgy around the maypole, a 'characteristic' ? (some of the civilizations had more ah liberal activities.)

Well, this equinox we had IGOR to take the cable down and enforce the inability to express oneself online whether coherently or incoherently.

I've always thought of the equinox as a time to meditate on justice issues. Day and night of equal length, the balance.... ??

I believe the points of the year were used for weather prediction too.. Sadly the forecast for us is distinctly disruptive. I feel another storm coming on...
