I have been a member of CR4 for a few years now, in addition to some other technical forums. And I must say, in many facets CR4 is the premier site and the one I go to first and often never having to go beyond to find my answer. It has world-wide membership, a high amount of activity, a huge readily available archive... I could go on and on.
Anyway, I wonder if you would be willing to share some history and specifics about CR4… below are just a sampling of some questions I have.
So, may I ask… when and how did it start? What fostered the birth of GlobalSpec, and more specifically CR4?
The statistics cited on your 'About GlobalSpec' page are staggering, did the founders anticipate such growth?
Why Conference Room 4 for a name? Is the '4' significant, like a revision level? Was there ever a CR 1, 2 or 3? If so, is a CR5 in development?
How many TB of archived threads are maintained on the CR4 servers? With the plethora of images that are often linked to posts, the file storage requirements must be quite high. I don't envy your IT person, but I do thank them… data retrieval rate is quite impressive on this site.
I could not even begin to imagine the hardware requirements behind driving and maintaining the GlobalSpec Search Engine and CR4.
I'm curious, has it ever been logged the highest number of registered members have been on line at the same time?
Presuming Administrators and Moderators have other responsibilities within GlobalSpec and that running CR4 is a secondary responsibility, at any given time, how much man power is required to keep Conference Room 4 stocked with Coffee and Donuts? Seriously though, excluding moderation, is CR4 pretty self sufficient or does it take a team of dedicated personnel to keep her up and going?
Your 'about' page cites 'over 6,000,000 registered users'. How old is that data? And what's the approximate number presently? And, presuming that is the number of peole using your search engine, how many registered members are there for CR4?
How many presently active members have been around since the initial inception?
Even with your high number of registered users, I see a core group that is always out and about, perusing the threads and commenting regularly. About how large is that group? 10? 100? 1,000?
Any stats on threads maintained? Which thread has the most replies, etc? If you created a top 10 or 100 threads of all-time list, what are some that would be considered?
Any other general information about GlobalSpec/CR4 that you'd like to share, it's birth, it's growth… where it ranks compared to similar product offerings? Any links to news stories where CR4 or its members were cited?
In closing, I want to say… your service offers engineers and technical professionals around the world a place to hang out. And, as you've said "…'the place' where the engineering community gathers and conducts business." Thanks.
I'm curious though… you provide a place for us to gather, discuss, and debate in CR4 and to find what we need with your search engine… have you considered a place for us to network besides in CR4? Something like LinkedIn offers? I'm not sure how introducing something like that would affect the anonymity that CR4 currently offers, but… something to consider. You have a huge sampling of technical minds from the world over, I see benefit in providing the ability for these minds to network beyond the realms of CR4.
Regardless, thanks for sharing any statistics/stories about the birth and continued life of a tool I find very useful.
