Orangutan Muscle

11/03/2010 5:16 PM

Has the gene responsible for the tremendous strength of the Orangutan and other apes been isolated? They are at least 6 times stronger than humans, and can literally tear a human limb-from-limb.

Is there a potential for implanting this particular gene or section of DNA into a human DNA strand?

Imagine an olympic athlete with such a genetic mutation.

Or maybe someone is already trying this for future soldiers?

Interesting idea, Dr Frankenstein....

Rather than the gene, it might be a multitude of genes acting in concert.

Thank you for your order, but I regret to inform you that LynDoor® Vasodilator Cream is temporarily out of stock. Inventory tracker says 3 cases of 36 tubes remain available to ship, but all anyone can find are empty tubes!

Hey! What is that big orange monkey doing in the warehouse?

"WOW", Compare this to your lip balm. My concoction is a blend of homogenized "pork fat" and "Bull Manure". It's Govt. certified to be outrageously expensive, tax free, and "lip smak'in good", and is only available while the legislature is in session. It is guaranteed to cure anything from cold sores to clap, is sometimes effective on upper and lower back pain, and is often used as a replacement for all other remedies. The actual quantity of ingredients per session is proprietary, the quality is patent pending, and the smell is copyrighted.

As a bonus, it comes in it's own little carrying case made from salvaged parachute material. It is guaranteed not to stain, rip or tear, or unravel from either end. It even floats.

Re: Orangutan Muscle

Seems like there are "chemicals" already getting a human pretty much there aside from the experimental gene implementations. I remember some of the yard apes working out in my gym back in the day could pretty much accomplish that task. It came by the many street-ish names of Dinabol, Test-siponate, Anadrol 50, Deca, and one used on horses called Equipoise, to name just a few. I thought watching guy's (granted genetics were still a definite factor) squat 900 lbs was pretty amazing. Now 1,100 to 1,200 is common place. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qwNlUTekYWA&feature=related Hurts just thinking it. The strong man competitions should include an Orangutan, would be interesting!

Yea, and wouldn't it be interesting to watch these human apes try to build a nest in a tree to sleep the night away. Did you know that in areas where there is little or no threat from attacks by tigers that the orangutans only mate when the female says it's OK, but where tigers are a real threat of attack, sex is abundant! It is like get it while you can, for we don't know just when the last time is going to occur! "Hey", will that creme work as a tiger repellant?

What? You must have not gotten the memo! I think this scenario exists for most human males! No wonder they share 99% genetic coding, or is that chimps? Regardless, women pretty much dictate that "condition". (don't let my wife see this! This song pretty much states the obvious, comically of course http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fj4vLZJhNEk

Re: Orangutan Muscle

I believe that it is on the island of Borneo that there seems to be a Tigers eating Orangutans issue. I read an article about this matter many years ago. It seems that the females willingly give in to male ambitions just to keep the males around for defence from the tigers. I have never heard of a tiger vs male orangutan event, but it is my understanding that the male orangutans only fear crocodiles, and only then while swimming.

Well, if you can't find a real tiger locally, look around Auburn University in Alabama or maybe LSU in Louisiana. Not successful there then try the cougars that roam the streets, pubs and hideaways of Boca Raton, Florida. They will devour any male younger than they are. Just don't tell your wife why the company you work for suddenly has something that only you can handle when you call for reservations on the next weekend flight to Palm Beach Municipal Airport.

This thread has gone on to interesting ideas, but I have a question about the original post.

Do we know that the muscle fibers themselves are stronger or that some of the 6-times comes from mechanical leveraging in the way the animals are constructed.

Actually a correction is in order - that should be 5,99963247514 times stronger - HiTek rounded the number off. Total lack of precision!

Certainly a big part of their ability comes from rather long arms.

Re: Orangutan Muscle

From what I have gathered, they put muscle fibers into a tensile strength machine, and test to the breaking point. Ape muscle is 6 times stronger than human. A 'tan has more strength in one finger than an athlete has in his whole body.

When a person encounters pain, he stops applying pressure to the muscle, before it tears.Same with other animals. It takes much more to cause pain in an ape muscle.

There was a case of a wild chimp pulling a mans arms completely off. They are incredibly strong. And the 'tan is the strongest of them all.Having that particular gene set in humans would be incredible, provided that everything else remained the same;intelligence, etc.

WARNING*****OFF TOPIC!*****OFF TOPIC*****THIS MAY BE IN BAD TASTE

Del has it about right. I think the unstated point here is that we would be able to rip each other's arms off. What could possibly go wrong? You could get into a barroom brawl Friday night and bring home a little something for Saturday BBQ (LOL). That's what you could call a real 'arms race'. And of course the 'originalists' on the Supreme Court would have to 'wrestle' (LOL) with this to see if it is covered under the 2nd Amendment. This may not be the best idea ever. I don't think the problem is that we humans are not sufficiently ape-like. If anyone is offended by this comment: thump thump thump whooooo whoooo whoooo thump thuump (I'll rip your freakin' arms off).

Hi,

It seems that one or two genes have been found, but... There is more... Please, read this interesting article http://www.slate.com/id/2212232/

Chimps /orang have another muscle/skeleton architecture and they are probably 2 times stronger than us. Genes that gives them this force seems already activated in part of the human sport elite...

Other than for military purposes and even that is limited, I don't see the point in these experiments. Why recreate or change the human body at "x" cost when we can cheaply and fairly efficiently make a machine that can do almost everything that needs to be done with the capability of doing much more than any animal (includes humans as animals) possibly ever could?

Unless these gene therapies are going to allow us to travel through space for long periods of time, we have other more important things that should be studied at the taxpayers expensive.

Now what we need to do is isolate the gene that gives humans their intelligence and somehow introduce that into the orangatangs and chimpanzees.

Re: Orangutan Muscle

It may be possible, as what I have read indicates that some of the reduction in musculature in humans derives from gene defects, some of whih have been identified. However, it appears that it is this gene defect that allowed our brains to develop so much larger and complex, due to some lack of stresses on the skull and lesser early development of the musculature that halts the capability of the skull to expand and stunts brain development. So yes you may get the intended strength development but it may cost you human mental aptitude and/or some other human advantages. Of course this is a type of therapy that would have to be undertaken at a very early stage of human development, as Apes begin developing much of their adult strength at a very early age.

I am not sure anyone would try this for soldiers as the benefits would likely not be worth the capabilities you would lose. However, for most athletics and sports except a few highly competitive and strategic team sport positions. Afterall athletics in the maodern era is really about entertainment, and apes are just more entertaining, but apes boxing, UFC, baseball, gymnastics, pole vaulting, golfing, shotput or javelin. Of course sprinting and distance running would be out as they are not so developed, and there is a good chance that their musculature impacts how their hips and such develop effecting their ability to walk and run unpright.

That really isn't the same thing. Stephen Hawking was intelligent before he became disabled in adulthood. Genetic modification of the musculature would be something that would need to be done at a very young age to get the results you see in apes, and thus could effect development.
