New FAQ: Please Hire an Engineer

05/12/2011 4:42 PM

There's been several new members lately that have posted questions that have bothered me. I know that most never bother to read the FAQ or rules before posting any question but I still believe that there is merit at being able to point to a violation after the fact. So I'd like to propose an addition to our FAQ listing that I think should go right next to the "Do your own homework" entry.

  • While CR4 has many fine certified Engineers that love there work, CR4 does not certify any comments made here as anything more than a friendly discussion. If you need an Engineer's report on how to do something that might injure people or property, hire an Engineer to look at your plans. Neither CR4 nor their members can be held legally responsible for any Engineering comment made at this site. CR4 is not a substitute for an Engineer's report.

That's not really well written but I think my point has been made.

Ok folks, now that I've set my self up for ridicule have at it. Just remember, even paranoids have real enemies.

You wrote "Engineers that love there work"

Should be "Engineers that love their work"

Other than that redfred, it looks all good !!

Re: New FAQ: Please Hire an Engineer

The title of your thread is New FAQ.

FAQ is a frequently asked question...............there is no question.

It looks good to me.

The legal team will probably pare it down to: Discussions on CR4 are just that, discussions. CR4 accepts no liability or responsibility for advice or answers given on the site.

I have to say though, while there are some dumb questions.

A) They are usually pointed out pretty quickly..............or whenever lyn wakes up.

B) While not necessarily true, I would expect that anyone that has the brains to log onto the internet, would know, (or should), that BS abounds all over the internet and should not be taken as gospel.

C) People post here from many countries. Some of which don't have access to civil engineers, don't have permitting requirements, and can pretty much do what they want.

While it's not a bad idea for admin to put this in the rules, I don't think it would change anything............these questions would still pop up.

I also must insist on giving us members some credit..........without the help of admin. When it comes to something that could get someone hurt or killed, we're pretty darned good at moderating ourselves. If anyone ever intentionally gave advice that could get someone hurt, they wouldn't last long here..........the rest of us would make sure of it.

Also, since we have no idea as to the level of competence of users of the information (as in the seat belt fiasco) there should be this disclaimer, too:

"All users of this site should independently verify any information presented here to determine that it is correct, safe and appropriate before proceeding with it's use."

But, I think things are fine the way they are.

When I decide to do something stupid, I just do it.

It's not up for discussion.

Fortunately, I'm getting a little smarter with the years. Let's see..........I've almost drowned, wrecked two motorcycles, burned all of the hair off my head, broke my back, fallen out of a moving car, got stuck on a live wire, blinded myself for two weeks with metal dust from an angle grinder and cut through the tendons on one of my fingers. That's the stuff I can remember.

Yeah...............I've wised up a little.

Re: New FAQ: Please Hire an Engineer

Helpful from a legal perspective (and I am a little surprised it isn't) but practically it falls a little short in two areas

1) You have to be pretty clueless, cheap or hopelessly out of your depth if you expect an open internet engineering forum to answer (for example) a complicated project design question only a team of consultants should be doing. Examples would be - "how to build a substation", "...our nuclear power plant reactor number 2 is acting up..", etc.

and

2) Based on some of the questions, who really reads the FAQ and rules before posting.

I would also add a clause in there to cover hiring a qualified electrician/consultant as CR4 does not give you super 'electrician' powers enabling a common office worker to install or rewire the company switchboard or distribution transformer. Yes these type of questions have really come up on CR4 from time to time.

Please, what does "in cervisia carmen" mean? I know "cervisia" is beer, but don't understand the carmen reference.

I don't know if Tornado has unsubscribed from this thread. He may have, and does not realize you have asked this question.

His tagline (or signature line) can be translated as "In wine there is truth; in beer there is song; in water there is..." well, you get it.

There are two threads you might wish to read. So, What's The Story Behind Your Avatar, and Who Are You Anyway. Both good reads about some of the members.

Welcome to CR4.

Thanks so much for your helpful reply! I will read the links you included. (will also look up the Latin tag you wrote)

I don't read any of the really technical stuff on this site, just the "new developments" section. That's all I can understand. (loved the exploding melons)

That said, I find the discussions much more interesting than the scientific articles themselves! Very informed, witty, and enlightening.

I never realized engineers had a sense of humor!

Doorman beat me to it, with a correct translation. "Carmen" (plural "carmina" as in Carmina Burana) = "song". I adapted this from the motto of a microbrewery some friends owned in my former town; it worked great on their sweatshirts. Their Triple Mash Golden was better even than Spaten Pils, but alas they went out of business.

Thanks, Tornado! I appreciate the background on the motto as I was going to inquire as to what ancient erudite Latin text it came from, haha.

This has opened up a whole new line of research for me -- Latin humor!

Vatican City has its own bank, Istituto per le Opere di Religione (Institute for Works of Religion). As is customary in the times we live in, the bank has an ATM. The instructions for the ATM are Latin! (The nerve of that guy, calling me a pedant!)

Ab Fab!! "Superfragilisticexpealidocious", to quote Mary Poppins. (That was Latin, wasn't it?)

Viva Henricas Barbitus! I will be using "the check is in the mail" one a lot, especially considering I'm supposed to be job-searching right now, haha.

I am learning more Latin than I did in high school. My teacher would be proud.

Do you think "Stand aside, Plebians!" is too arrogant for a conversational opener?

I try to give the best advice I can based on experience. Years of keeping piles of rust together gives one a somewhat pragmatic view on life.

OK this is the theory of how it works. Now hit it with a big hammer, and it will work.

I'm surprised that this type of disclaimer isn't already prominently displayed on the site for legal reasons. It must be because it is a "given". Although engineers are bound by professional integrity to only give advice that they know to be accurate, this site is not a professional forum, and members are not identified or portrayed in any way as professional engineers.

Re: New FAQ: Please Hire an Engineer

Hi Fred

I suggested a while back to remove an axle by using thermite. I hope he did it so that he now knows how to step back and when and not use a garden hose at any time. I don't think any judge would convict me of causing death or GBH because I made the suggestion.

Home work? My guilty, I do it all the time. I can't count the occasions when I took advantage of CR4 as a place to find information which would have taken me days to research. I feel no shame and at my age, who cares? The obvious ones stand out like ducks nuts.

Neither CR4 nor their members can be held legally responsible for any Engineering comment made at this site. CR4 is not a substitute for an Engineer's report.

I have recently included links from CR4 in a document regarding a certain matter. This link will save the reader research time. The comments, suggestions made by members were so to the point that it saved me the time reinventing the wheel.

Although not presented as certification the links do give support to what is being discussed. Some Members here use their knowledge and give with out the need to ask for a second time. Buyer beware, we all know that, I think.

The learned observer will be able to separate the OT culprits in no time at all. I personally like the sometimes camp fire feel of this site. There is plenty of fuel laying around, might as well keep the fire going.

Tell the bartender your having one on me, same problem, , Ky.

Ah - the thermite method (akin to the sodium chlorate method). Takes me back.

Re: New FAQ: Please Hire an Engineer

Why would this be necessary?

Asking a question no matter how ill conceived should never be a "Violation"

If your best advice is Hire a Professional, leave it at that

This thread out 15 comments only 1 1/2 replies attempt to answer the OP's question

The OP was attempting to have a deeper understanding of reinforcement schemes

I think it would be more useful to have a rule against repeatedly posting based on unsupported assumptions of OP's motives & skill level

or possibly a rule against questioning a OP's intelligence

many responses are just personal abuse, with no point

Do you think RedFred can be held legally accountable for any advice posted here on CR$ ?

After all the requirements for membership are pretty rigorous

you have to have an Email address

I'd talk about all the different fun things we could toss on the fire

but I'm sure some one would come rain on that particular parade too

Just checking in with a little vodka buzz.

We've actually got another thread going on new rules that need to be imposed.

Simply amazing.......................back to the porch.

Can you point me to (or give me more hints) the thread on new rules?

I tried searching on "new rules", new rules, and with or without your name.

Intentionally not marked OT until someone replies--then I will mark it OT.

Re: New FAQ: Please Hire an Engineer

There's been several new members lately that have posted questions that have bothered me.

If that's in the sense thay you feel persecuted, I suggest you contact admin with relevent details. If you are simply disturbed by the stuff you read, then either switch off or find a good therapist (I hear that America has many)

"....there is merit at being able to point to a violation after the fact." True, but it's far easier to just report any dross to Admin (saves one getting embroilled in slagging matches).

"....hire an engineer...." Yah, well if somebody is so damn stupid as to risk life and limb on the basis of unsubstantiated internet info, they shouldn't even get out of bed in the morning.

It's a Saturday morning, and I can't even get the editor to block-change italics. Damn that last bottle of wine last night .

I'd have right good fun playing with this, but I guess it's the weekend. Maybe you could add it to your profile, or perhaps add a new 'quote line' after all commments. Good point but, trust me, you don't want to try make a sensible point at the weekend.

The linguistic pedents have already baked you for breakfast - run ! Trust me, these people even want apostrophes.

Apart from all that waffle, how do you trust anyone on CR4 ? No disrespect to anyone, but I wouldn't. Cull the best info you can find, then verify with somebody local who is answerable to the back of yout hairy palm. Cerveat emptor.

I have several question currently bubbling in my head. but have not yet had courage to ask them - either people would think I was taking the pee and give an apt responce, or I'd follow some insane advice. Question 1 is in fact pee related, and question 2 is about locating underground pipe. The possibility of me geting a sensible answer (or at least, being able to sift thru to the good ones) is aproximately nill on a weekend. Even using the word "weekend" at a weekend would get me slaughtered.

Nobody here is your real enemy, Fred, we just exist on the internet. By and large, somebody who want's to be your 'internet chum' is a person to run from .

After seeing your link, I've decided that it's time to bite the bullet and admit that I need therapy..............................but only with her.

I wonder if she would tell me what a bad boy I am?

I would give you a point for "good question" if we had such a category.
