What is Pressure Gauge Bottom Mount

09/09/2011 6:38 AM

What is the meaning of the pressure gauge bottom mount?

Does it mean that it has been mounted on the bottom of the pipe line?

My plant has a manifold that has the pressure gauge which is mounted on the bottom of the pipe. It is the crude line..Is this a standard practice ..Please suggest me a best practice followed in the industry.

Please advice

It means that the inlet to the gauge is on the bottom, as opposed to on the back.

Doesnt these type of installation creates plugging or clogging in the tapping since it is in the bottom and there are more chances of condensates and sediments get into the gauge line..

Is this installation a best practice for a crude oil manifold line?

Or has it to be mounted on the top of the line.

OK. So if there are solids in the stream, why not fit a diaphragm gauge?

The inlet is at the bottom of the gauge and not on the bottom of the pipe!!!!

Why don't you ask the manufacturer what they by a bottom mount? Any ambiguous meanings by them should be answered by them. For all we know this could be because the company once had a brilliant mechanical engineer name Phineas T. Bottom that crafted a brilliant mount that could accept multiple gauges of various types and ranges. This mount was so ingenious that any failing gauge could be replaced and repaired from the front of the panel with out the need of any special tools. Then again, maybe this is closer to a fanny pack.

yes.. it is the placement of the inlet on the guage itself... so it can be on a pipe, but face the front. (as opposed to a rear inlet that can be mounted in a hole in a control panel))

but bottom mounted guages (bottom of the pipe) are used in cryo piping I think.

I did once see such an installation in an overhead pipe application. I doubt it conformed to any 'best practice' though...

Seems to me in your application, that the gauge weldolets were mounted incorrectly during pipe fabrication, or that the section of the pipe, if flanged, may have been fitted 'upside down'.

As far as 'best practice' goes, direct mounting in a crude oil application is folly...you need to protect the gauge (and the integrity of the read-out) with a diaphragm between the gauge and the process fluid.
