What Happened to You ?

11/24/2011 12:22 PM

At some point in my life, I decided that science/engineering was 'my thing'. The question is, when/why did that happen ? Who or what inspired you.

For me, it was the certainty of yes or no. I either aced a math paper or flopped. No middle ground. More fool me as I learned, 'the more you know, the more dubious it becomes'. At 16, an answer is either correct or wrong in mathematics. In the arts, it is a qualitative assessment. Yeah ! .......Go on a couple more years up the educational ladder and the answers for math are debatable.

Was it a 'Guru' who showed you a way ? (I had one). 2+2 =4, so no argument (I know, you will). An essay on Descartes can be marked on a varying score with no absolute marker.

Why did you turn to 'science' rather than the 'arts' ? A person can ponder Holbein, or ponder Newton. What tips the scales , and why do we go on e way or another ?

I seek exactitude, even though I shall never likely find it.

<I only did this because of mention of a lack of questions >

Go on, why science rather than art ? My excuse is the security of seeking definition.

Equality of opportunity at least?

Maybe the scale is actually three dimensional and they don't tell the scary ones they are above the paper; just quietly have security escort them out?

Sheesh. They told me that Newton, Bohr, and Hawking are all examples of my type, the Mastermind (bwahaha) I guess they overlap em.. multiple-personality-type disorder, all rationals I assume... Or they took a few shortcuts in the marketing department.

Great profiles all the same, they are a bit more fun flattering than the ones Garthh posted awhile ago (sorry Garthh!) now why aren't I an artisan, which is the fact of the matter ...

I had one of three sons was just born bloody minded, took years to teach him to pick his battles.

That said, as the youngest of three sons, it served him well dealing with his bigger brothers. They eventually learned you either persuaded him or gave up; there was no pushing him into things.

Re: What Happened to You ?

At the risk of being presumptions, that sounds very like what happens with many younger kids. I'm #2/8 (unless dad told a few porkies). It would have so amused me to have a sis I could taunt as 7/9 (most of my siblings are gals) ! Even if parents love all kids equally, # number is bound to be a factor in how they grow up.

It's akin to astrology nonsense. If others believe in it, they will treat a person according to expected character type. End result will be continued exposure to this and a tendancy to conform to that type. Needless to say, I am 'on the cusp' and pick my character mode as I want each morning, sometimes by the hour ().

At the risk of going back on topic, I followed elder sis by 1 year at school. All the teachers had preconceived ideas of what kind of person I was. They were totally wrong, although we shared core values. My fortune was to have a neighbour at one point who was a very good Zoologist and excellent communicator (my dad had buggered off many years before, though not with acrimony). Next lucky step was my stepdad, who to this day I rank as the most clever person I know (albeit an Electrical Eng). In short, pure chance lead me to where I went and am know. But for fate I may have been a Librarian, Binman, or Corporate Lawyer. Engineering was not pre-ordained, though it's debatable that an inate curiousity about anything and everything led me that way.

It's quite liberating to strip ones cloathes and streak the forum once in a while .

I wouldn't bother to relate all that, except to suggest to all (even though I reckon you would all agree) that education and exposure to new things is crucial in helping a person evolve and find their niche in the world.

There endeth the sermon ramble.

Like yourself, I certainly wouldn't chalk career entirely to any one thing. But having stared really hard at each of my sons I have no doubt in my fuzzy little mind they are born with little fully formed personalities.

Phase of the moon, astrology, don't know I am ready for those any more than birth order etc.

Career I think is a result of exposure and choices and opportunities as much as preference - I may be perfectly suited to be a barrister, but if I can't afford the education ...

Interesting ramble.

Like you I'm also #2 (of 3). My elder brother, in fact, displayed lots of technical interests and aptitudes and had friends who also got involved in "their thing" - from which I was excluded. If I'd wanted to push it, it would have turned into the 'battle for dominance' where you are constantly competing with the older sibling. You also get repudiated then, for taking up interests not because you really like them but only to compete with the big guy and cause family strife. I'm actually a big avoider of conflict - I hate fights and the 'personal drama' that plays out in the soaps and in some people's homes - not mine, if I can help it. Home should be a sanctuary from that $%^t.

I never had "the knack" for mechanical/electrical/technical though - more of a dumb curiosity than anything, so I was happy enough to mind my own business and do something else. Tech/engineering interests became more important to me later when out on my own.

I also found out about "the knack" after my son was born - he sure didn't learn it from me! From watching kids grow up, I agree with Edignan, we are born with stuff that's a little more than the presently known menu on the DNA.

The dynamics of a kids # number in a family are surely a factor, and one that morphs as other siblings appear.

Curiosity puzzle me. Some people just 'want to know' and are inquisitive about all. I was young when my parents separated and they couldn't find words to explain, so I learnt to be a bit stealthy. Seeking info became part of life. Sheesh, I'm reclined on the couch in full public view ! Dang funny . Having started this thread, I don't mind sharing a little.

My own opinion is that none of us are born as engineering/science types. Perhaps predisposed, but nurture plays a more important factor. If only I had known, I would have become a ........

Birth order, astrological sign, adult influences, your surroundings, what you were named, so many influences in a child's life it would be hard short of double-blind tests keeping babies in cages to actually get to the bottom of so many factors; IMHO which because I am a Leo is not all that humble at all.

Or are all these just ways we confirm and attribute the result?

It refers to tourists' tendancy to swarm in great numbers when the weather is nice. I think there's a touch of "the all look alike" in there too!

Grockles is a similar term of "endearment".

I need hear how they are pronounced.

I was going to say that I have heard a Cornishman talk about "vurriners vrum englun" but I decided not to because I may have included it in a previous post.

Well, since the last thing I would do is talk about my real name on the internet (and since the platinum and titanium threads are grinding very slowly), how about the traumas of your avatar name.

I was shocked to find that some people think my name is Arthur. It is not.

I even had a PM where someone thought I was a specific Arthur Smith who authored some anti-feminist diatribes. Uh- uh.

Then I did a worried vanity check, and I discovered that there are so many dang fellers named Art Smith out there, I couldn't have picked a more anonymous handle if I'd tried to.

The fact of the matter, I picked the name because I put useless dents in things for a living, with a highly polished hammer. If I was paid to take the dents out, I'd a called myself BodySmith.

Uh, I think I had intuited from your history of comments that it was Art as in noun and Smith as in verb, and liked it though I must admit your job description puzzles.

As for anonymity on the web, couldn't ask for more for Christmas! I've got a post I made to NPR still haunts me.

But there were probably easier names to grow up with in rural Oklahoma and Texas, not because they had never heard of Emmett, which was still pretty common then, but because I was always the new kid - probably wouldn't have mattered what my name was after all.

Had one assistant principal / football coach decide he was going to use my middle name, Joseph, so he called me Joe. After a week of correcting him I just got deaf and failed to answer until he quit.

But all was OK as Emmet was my grandfather's name, and although he died untimely young all my early years were colored by spending lots of time with him. I was mad about him. Used to slip out of the house and sit on the curb (can't cross streets when you are that small) waiting for him to get out of early Mass so we could go to his house for breakfast. Drove my sainted mother nuts trying to keep me in - ha! Definitely where my technical skills got polished.

Well that's one thing Kris hadn't analyzed yet - amount of experience as 'new kid'. Every 'new kid' experience means you are back at the bottom of the pecking order and on the fringe.

Yeah, I love anonymity on the web. Tis sweet alright.

we have come around to discussing personality types, along with that is how we play with others

most of us have some level introversion [the extroverts are on some other thread or site]
