Whatever it is, there's some very crappy welding done joining the parts together.

I sort of fancy 34point5's answer, though it may be a "production model" instead of a "prototype"....

Maybe a part of a new cold fusion reactor? LOL

Gotta love an old aircraft radial engine, like those found on 1930's era Steermans, Republic P-47D Thunderbolts, FW-190's, Grumman F8F Bearcats, Douglas DC-3's, and the like.

A Wright Cyclone is a marvel to behold and a work of art.....

Thanks 34point5 for the pics!

What a great 'win - win' for you!

As you probably have divined, I'm quite partial to Bristols - and reciprocally, you might well enjoy a read about these chappy's.

Quite stunning 'peak of the art' specs.

Yes, indeed, nothing quite as satisfying as the genuine article passing through experienced hands and relishing the copious stains it produces.

If memory serves, and it was some time in the past, and we all know how hard it to find things we once saw on CR4; but did you once post a semi-profile of your Bristols? I seem to associate with you being in Jodhpurs? Or perhaps I'm mixing up my English towns, but I remember thinking at the time the architecture was quite attractive.

Re: What Is It?

02/09/2012 2:25 AM

I read someplace that CR4 has an Archive.

Etymology

First attested in English in early 17th century, the word archive ( /ˈɑrkv/) is derived from the French archives (plural), in turn from Latin archīum or archīvum,[4] which is the romanized form of the Greek ἀρχεῖον (arkheion), "public records, town-hall, residence or office of chief magistrates",[5] itself from ἀρχή (arkhē), amongst others "magistracy, office, government"[6] (compare an-archy, mon-archy), which comes from the verb ἄρχω (arkhō), "to begin, rule, govern".[7]

The word originally developed from the Greek ἀρχεῖον (arkheion) which refers to the home or dwelling of the Archon, in which important official state documents were filed and interpreted under the authority of the Archon. The adjective formed from archive is archival.

Am somewhat puzzled, because the CR4 archive doesn't seem to be 'Public'. Perhaps they meant to say 'put in the circular filing cabinet'.

<hope nobody minds my OT, but the thread is 'answered' and I think that means it's due for closure so no harm in a little banter ?>

I'm not really sure, the timetable is a little haphazard. The instructors seem to enjoy just springing a session on us. The irony is that many Brit MP's pay for this sort of thing. D'oh, I've just given my hosts ideas . Perhaps I can persuade them that the number of people who enjoy a little bit of sport is outweighed by the people who like to watch as they go to the kiosk for a flange or two.

In the past we had no way to "save" files that were removed from the site. That was changed this week so it is indeed archived.

Some words have more than one literal meaning. From our friends at Dictionary.com:

ar·chive

4. Digital Technology .

a. a long-term storage device, as a disk or magnetic tape, or a computer directory or folder that contains copies of files for backup or future reference.

b. a collection of digital data stored in this way.

c. a computer file containing one or more compressed files.

d. a collection of information permanently stored on the Internet: The magazine has its entire archive online, from 1923 to the present.

A bit unfortunate that the examples include "The magazine has its entire archive online", rather than 'archive offline'.

Most people are aware that words can have more than one meaning. I'd cite Humpty Dumpty or Stairway to Heaven as examples.

As it was your "body of work" one would think your publisher would at least have the common courtesy to furnish the Author with a copy.

Copyright is after all the right to copy. There is nothing in the Laws that gives the right to subsume and deny the creator of the work their work.

In fact a number of references to the contrary.

Re: What Is It?

It's a fascinating thought, and I'd mulled over the general notion.

I'm not very savvy with American law, but a couple of points lead me to think this a non-runner. There's the G4/CR$ disclaimer at bottom of page for starts. Then there is the fact that I was not the only person to contribute, which raises issues of their privacy and so on.

To make an analogy; I visit a church for a baptism. They have a guest book and I say how much I liked the font (for any non-church types that's the 'baby bath'. Sort of). Following my comment, other guest add their views upon said font. The Vicar decides ond day to hide the Guest book. Problem is, the Guest Book belongs to the church.

Britland has a Freedom of Information Act, but even if CR4 were Brit based I'm not sure an avatar would be able to use this instrument. The US equivalent seems to apply to Feds only. It's possible that routine security monitoring of the interweb might mean the Feds have all of CR4 stashed.

The legal protection of the right to privacy in general - and of data privacy in particular - varies greatly around the world.

No one shall be subjected to arbitrary interference with his privacy, family, home or correspondence, nor to attacks upon his honour and reputation. Everyone has the right to the protection of the law against such interference or attacks.

-Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Article 12

Had I felt attack upon my honour, then it might be that I could take GS to court and demand the archived evidence.

<dang...locked into italics>

It's all very complex.

The court case might be fun to see.

A most intereting issue, 34point5. I'll mark myself OT here, but it's perhaps a question that admin could clarify in the FAQ sometime.

"Off-Topic? Yes. (Thanks for being honest!)". My pleasure .

Re: What Is It?

In the standard American contracts outlined in Perle and Williams on Publishing Law, Volume 2, you will find the publisher holds the right to not publish a submitted work, and the right to copyright where a writer is being reimbursed via employment or some other financial arrangement.

The universal tenet in US Law is; No payment = No ownership.

However, contract wise; I would think BBT is more analogous to a syndicated column - e.g. Dear Abby

In this Abby holds the IP and the syndicator holds copyright. Bottom line 'contributors' are responding to Abby, even each other - via Abby - not the syndicator

Per above; if Abby is not receiving financial gain, the column inches and content are indisputably her body of works, not theirs.

Notwithstanding; should the syndicator (or any publisher) drop out of any agreement to publish, it forfeits copyright.

In that forfeit it cannot reasonably deny access to Abby's body of work for whatever reason unpaid Abby may purpose it. Paid Abby might be limited to; as a reference base to older comments by a continuing personal following, or her memoirs, or a 'compilation' for historical interest, or other, as negotiated.

For another example; If Harper decline to publish a second edition of a work, they can not prevent, inhibit, or sabotage an author by denial of means to take it to say Penguin.

The analogy in labor law is firing someone, wiping all record of their employment, refusing a reference outlining their role, denying they ever worked there and demanding they honor the 'non-competition clause' in the employment agreement they just tore up. American juries in particular tend to award 'punitive millions'

Ref the GS disclaimers and IP claims - anyone can write anything and it doesn't mean how it is applied is outside challenge.

It maybe inherently unfair, or fairly written and unfairly applied.

Many employment agreements through to warranties have been 'overturned' because of 'one sided application'. Again the 'punitive millions'.

Not that I'm suggesting this should go to law - just that "Fair is Fair" and 'punitive attracts punitive'

I will leave this OT to save Savvy the bother of following me around OT-ing my posts irrespective of thread relevance. Luckily I'm not attached to scoring GA's

Were you thinking of this? I have promised Savvy I'll add more soon ...

A couple of points you may find interesting. Bristol is a city not a town, and it currently a Unitary Authority, an administration term. It was granted county status in 1374, having donated 2 fully crewed, equipped and provisions ships for the war (must have been against the French, or possibly the Spanish. No time to double check). My birth certificate bares the legend "The City and County of Bristol". It gives me great delight to put "Bristol" in the box marked "County of birth" on those official forms, as most people don't know. I have even greater delight in pointing out that was born before the erstwhile County of Avon was invented. Bizarrely, the police force is still known as the Avon and Somerset Constabulary. The Avon and the Frome (pronounced Froom, not froahm) are the two rivers on whose confluence the bridge was built (Brigstow -> Bristol)

Jodhpur is in India....sad to say, I've never visited.

I absolutely love the Lockheed Connie and it's 4 radials. There is nothing else on this planet that quite sounds like that plane, especially at takeoff when they reach V1!

If you ever get a chance get a ride in one! I'm lucky to have done so on 2 occasions in the past (in restored Connies) at our annual airshows (the now defunct National Warplane Museum).

Thanks for the video link!

Sorta looks like a mid-70's British built Ford/Mercury Capri, if I'm not mistaken????

I used to own a 1973 Mercury Capri.....couldn't kill it for the life of me! Body and damn electrical system wore out, but the engine and 4-speed manual trannie kept going and going, much like the Energizer Bunny! It lived until the day after I returned to home following college graduation in '83. I think I had 234,000+ some miles on the Odo. I just called the junkyard to have it towed away the following day! LOL Talk about "perfect timing"!
