Interesting Job Titles

12/11/2012 2:51 PM

I like to hear from anybody that has or has seen an interesting job title. Real ones, not made up. Mine is mundane "Project Manager", but on the way home today, I met a guy at the gas station, he asked me about a Master Angler sticker in my truck, we got to talking about fishing and exchanged business cards, his said "Professional Beer Consultant", I thought what an awesome job title.... So lets hear yours.

My son recently showed me an add put up on a board at his college for "material relocation engineers". It turned out to be a local construction supply company looking for some cheap labor to hump drywall.

Re: Interesting Job Titles

Hmmm... Time for a rant.

I've always considered 'Engineer' the most abused title out there. I think most folks here will agree that an engineer studies specs, applies them to the problem at hand, and designs, builds, moves, etc. Where's the engineering in relocating drywall? Specialist or expert would have been more appropriate. You wouldn't call them a 'material relocation doctor' would you? Nobody abuses the title doctor (except for quacks, but that's a whole different ball of wax), but engineer, anybody can call themselves an engineer! When you think about it, to become a PE takes nearly as much time as a doctor, just a fraction of the respect!

Whew, I feel better now!

To quote Homer Simpson, "D'oh!"

Actually, the title "Railroad Engineer" is used colloquially in the US and only a few other countries. According to Wikipedia they are called drivers or operators in most other countries. That makes much more sense to me and I'll assert that, despite its long term usage, "Railroad Engineer" is a misnomer.

I like the disclaimer in the Wiki article as well, "The use of the term "Engineer" to describe this occupation should not be confused with professional engineer."

I think a "railroad engineer" is a valid title, especially one that runs steam locomotives. Stationary engineers operate steam plants like the ones in NYC. They do more than just turn valves, They have a huge responsibility to maintain safety standards. Both engineers are valid titles.

Agreed. A steam engine is a boiler on wheels, a hugh responsibility to operate safely.

I used to work for a guy that claimed he was the Head of the Sam Houston Institute of Technology. If you take the first letters of the Sam Houston part and put them in front of "Head" then you will get what he was saying.

Unheard of today, my title was "Elevator Operator".

That's what I did. It was one of those old hotel elevators in a 9 floor hotel. 1963 was the year.

You stood in the corner and opened the manual doors and used the hand control to go up or down.

The pool was on the 7th floor, so many guests rode wearing only bathing suits back and forth.

Re: Interesting Job Titles

12/11/2012 5:33 PM

There was a fellow with whom I was acquainted who was interesting, to say the least. Sort of a drifter, he added an occasional odd job to his daily routine in order to supplement his income, this eventually going mostly for brandy and gin.

I carried his calling card around for years, but sadly it has become lost. The best I can remember Jerry had not included a title on the card, the card instead proclaiming that he was available for hire in case you should ever need

  • Bridges destroyed
  • Virgins converted
  • Uprisings quelled
  • Elephants bred
  • Oceans drained
  • Saloons emptied
  • Revolutions started
  • Tigers tamed
  • Coffins reposessed

None of these things I doubted... well, maybe he would have had some trouble draining an ocean. There were probably a few listed skills I have not included, but you get the idea.

I once got a card from a guy who was an excavation contractor. His card said, "joe blow, PhD*". You turn the card over and it says: "* PhD: Professional Hole Digger".

A bit off topic from actual job titles, but there's lots of sayings on buz cards in the trades game: Welders have notations about "fixing the crack of dawn" or brazing a "broken heart". Sand and gravel guys: "we rock the world".

A lot of great posts, here is really great reading, sadly I have nothing to contribute, many thanks.

I can only offer a few funny web sites on the subject:-

http://jobs.aol.com/articles/2010/09/24/unusual-job-titles/

http://www.freshbusinessthinking.com/news.php?NID=14010&Title=LinkedIn+unveils+most+unusual+job+titles#.UMg2vKyjOSo

http://www.wantedanalytics.com/insight/2012/08/24/unique-job-titles-as-a-hiring-strategy/

There were a lot more but these appealed to me most, especially the Apple one in the last link:- "Genius Bar"......

I hope this was enough "ON TOPIC" for all concerned.

After my wife passed away last year I sent a note to her high school alumni association letting them know that she had died. I got a note back from the president of the group with his business card attached. It said his occupation was 'Consultant'. It didn't have any company name on it nor did it specify in what field, so I assume he is an expert in everything.

/No his name wasn't 'Lyn'.

Well mine should be "Dog Breeder" but I won't put THAT on my business card!

So maybe it should be "Kennel Maintenance Engineer"...about covers everything I do without getting into describing the messy parts in detail.

There is a group of people who plan for space for everyone.

I always liked "rat catcher". How about mid wife or chief bottle washer? When it comes to interesting job titles, no one can beat the U.S. government like assistant to the under secretary of economic developing countries, far east division, or the like. There is absolutely no way to know what they actually do. Maybe they go for coffee.
