A Scientific Question for You Guys

07/27/2013 11:21 AM

I have a scientific question for you guys. If you swing a steel chain fast enough in circles can you then deflect a bullet.I have tried google this but i cannot find insacly the answer for this.
If a person shoot from his gun at you, say from 50 meters, say 50 cal. And you would be able to swing very fast, and you could swing a 1 meter long steel chain fast enough in circles, can you deflect a bullet.
I promise this is not a homework, i have been thinking about this for sometime now, and i really need an answer please...
But then is another question, how fast would you need to swing the chain for deflection...

Thank you very much, no i have no and i have never had any intention to actually try this, but i appreciate your and other concerns for my safety, i can feel the love. sniff i love you guys...........................(irony).

But it amuses me endlessly how others always assume one is gonna do stupid things, they sems not understand that sometimes you need to think crazy things to better understand how physics work in practical matter.

But i love your input in that mother, good one...

Itech-

Thank you for your comments and expert analytical thoughts of the "Experimental Experiment of Chain Twirling and the Induced Effects of a Propelled Mass Introduction Into a Rotational Mass". We, the committee, would like to comment on your proposed proposal.

1. We have to stick to the original post. We are looking for a specific answer to a specific situation. Introduce many more variables and it might confuse the Guinness Book of World Records observer. If that were to happen any possibilities of being listed in their book might be fruitless. Being fruitless is worse than being vegetableless.

2. This is why we are doing all this experimentation!

a. At this time power requirements are not a concern. We have jumped the meter! If that should fail, we has contingencies for the rental of 2,000 ft of !6-3 SJO or 1.000 ft of 10-3 NM for power. Besides, there is a soda machine outlet within 300 ft of the test site. Local regulations forbid working off of HV lines such as the highest level on the poles. Besides then we would have to rent a transformer. New poles are not equipped with steps and none of our staff has any of the good old spikes. Can we borrow yours?

b. We have been assured that the site of the experiment is solid and has been compacted. They have also stated that the defunct coal mine under the town will be of no concern.

c. Would you like to offer to catch them? We will forward a new genuine "Babe Ruth" style 1st base players glove. Make sure you apply Neat's-foot Oil before showing up.

d. Who said we would be moving it. It is still going to be at Waynesburg, OH.

e. Please refer to post #64. Come on, how can this stuff cause break? Statistically there is more chance of cows flying than this thing, as noted in post#64 of this forum.

f. coverage- If this is of concern to you, you can contribute a blanket to cover it at night.

h.- Hey, this pond thing, if Britain is a sore loser that isn't our problem. We fought fair and square!

Things like this don't have to be in the movies to work. Look at the successes of such notable individuals as: James Bond, Barney Fife, Maxwell Smart, Roy Rogers and his horse Trigger, Hopalong Cassidy, the Road Runner to name a few. You try and convince the Hulk that he is wrong!

We already have a camera operator and a slow motion camera operator on staff. We will be offering 8x10 glossies if you are interested. Extra charge for autographs.

Original poster did not state this requirement for Kevlar. We are also in the opinion that it would be a hindrance to the chain twirlers.

This experiment will go forward!

Experimental Experiment Advisory Board

Good Luck, Old Salt

This is starting to sound like a very entertaining movie.

The great bullet hitter, a true story about the greatest chain twirler in the world, and the battle of one self and a flying bullets.

Narrated by Morgan freeman. Directed by Peter Jackson, can even be a trilogy...

GUDS777-

Hey, that's a great idea! I can see it now----Superman, Wonder Woman, King Kong, Batman, Robin, the Phantom, James Bond, Wiley Coyote, the Road Runner, the General Lee Car, Gomer Pyle, and most of all the most flexible of them all "Chain Twirler"! All the big names in the annals of movie stardom. The opening for "The Great Bullet Hitter" would require all of Times Square and beyond. Hollywood would have to open up all theaters to accommodate all the red carpet stars for the premier. We could also rent a banquet room at CIBO's fine Italian food restaurant in Waynesburg,OH, ( cibosrestaurant.com ) the home of the first "Experimental Experiment of Chain Twirling and the Induced Effects of a Propelled Mass Introduction Into a Rotational Mass" dinner and awards presentations. Just imagine it now on the marquee ", The Great Bullet Hitter, protector of women and children and Cabbage Patch Dolls".

You are a cinemagraphic genius! "The Great Bullet Hitter", I can hear the crowds shouting now! How about Steven Spielberg for the producer, Peter Jackson for director, Morgan Freeman for the Narrator and whoever you want for the male and female stars! This is your project, run with the ball!

Good Luck, Old Salt

What if making the part of the chain that is facing the bullet out of softer metal that deforms when the bullet hits it? maybe enough to slow the bullet down to non lethal speeds?

Good question! The OP specified steel so we have to stay with that. This experiment is to investigate the parameters of the OP and not others at this time.

If you would like to participate or make a contribution to further studies please let us know.

May I participate in the madness?

Once you make a chain spin, you create a moment that the chain line becomes a scroll. Just turn the axis of/and/ the motor and you have a bullet catcher. I could go in detail but the patent is not ready yet. Even more: radar waves are faster than a bullet and we find de- and re- flections by each naval deflector. I can also start the bullet eater thing, but that is another story.

dymdsc-

Thank you very much for you well defined association of the basic properties of quantum physics, molecular chemistry, atomic absorption, sub-particle acceleration to this experimental experiment. We in no way contradict you illustrious demonstration of the command of scientific vocabulary. Your points will be further reviewed and a scientific paper published in a periodical of high distinction. After that endeavor we may submit them also to a periodical of great interest to many scientist and engineers, PLAYBOY magazine.

Your suggestion concerning "moment" we find we cannot concur with this on our part. You state "Once you make a chain spin, you create a moment that the chain line becomes a scroll. Just turn the axis of/and/ the motor and you have a bullet catcher." Our disagreement is relative to who is stupid dynamic enough to turn the Chain twirler, the chain, the motor if so equipped and all necessary support equipment. Come on now, have you ever attempted to turn a spinning bicycle wheel? That ain't guna woirk! Also we have to stick to the stated parameters of the original poster.

As for the use of radar, it is our plan to avoid such monitoring by the Ohio state Highway Patrol. Can you imagine if one of those big tall guys was to attempt to pull over one of our chain twirlers while they were practicing and the radar mistook the chain for the chain twirler? It would be pure mayhem! All the contestants who had lunch at the Railroad Café would have to put down their beers in order to cheer the chain twirler on. No one would be permitted to cheer on the trooper with his funny "Smokey the Bear" hat, punishable by eviction from the activities.

As an aside, we have determined that "Cibo's Family restaurant" ciibosrestraunt.com, with its fine Italian dining has been chosen for the location of the banquet for the presentation of trophies, certificates, bribe payoffs, side-bet consolidations and other important displays of gratitude. Cibo's has a fine extensive menu to satisfy your culinary requirements. After reviewing it, we can say, if you want linguine with red/white sauce, veal Marsalis, veal saltimbocca, any linguine dish, scungilli, linguine Pescadores, or some other dishes we will direct you to the "Terminal Café" conveniently located in Minerva. OH, just a few miles up RT 183.

Should you have any scientific questions, or culinary for that matter, please utilize this forum. "Slim" and "Darlin'" of our research staff will promptly provide you with the appropriate information.

Re: A Scientific Question for You Guys

I should have elaborated - thought first of doing it- (between brackets) of the "moment", like in "le moment supreme", not anything else.

Your answer is very (=too) technical. I suggest having some rest and relaxation (rest as in doing nothing stressful and relaxation as the same but having a free and open mind created for fantasy, curves and beauty?)

When you spin the chain with a motor @ regulated frequency, first the chain is going to roll itself up around the shaft, bobbin or whatever attachment you'll fix to the shaft.

When the RPM increases. the chain is going to unroll, due to the centripetal force. Here starts the wonderful creation of the scroll.

In that restaurant, if they serve long spaghetty, you 'll spin it around the fork (the spaghetty). Suppose, you'll spin it around a rotating shaft (beware of the sauce flying around - perhaps goggles?). The scroll form appears also when the RPM's are right.

Just had to write it. CR4 has not a - no-sense, nonsense department.

Perhaps that's why these comments infiltrate in what is supposed to serve an engineering community. Most engineers know how to produce steam, but not how to get rid of it? Perhaps a blow- out here?

DVMDSC-

Thank you for the numerous compliments you have given this experimental experiment. Only with the scientific and engineering orientated of or many contributors would this be possible. The technicality with this "blog" is I ain't getin paid for it! These labors are from the depths of my heart for all the kind submitters who have assisted us, and therefore the OP, in solving this dramatic problem.

As for the technicality of these postings and myself, my wife does not agree with your evaluation. Unfortunately, since she is the one who doles out the beer money I listen to her and her demands. Her therapeutic shopping already causes my beer money to shrink! She also classifies me as rude, crude, obnoxious, profane, lazy, belching, flatulent, stinky and those are the good things she says about me! As for the R&R time I couldn't agree with you more! I am currently experiencing this at home because she is in South Florida with her family for the past 2 weeks! Would you like me to send them over to your place while they are there? CAUTION- the mother-in-law is 91 years old and has a lot of experience in b-tching and ordering people around, such as myself, around. She usually calls me the "know it all son-in-law". At least she can rhyme. I don't take offense to this because I have to still respect her or my wife will add things onto my qualities list!

I pass over your technical suggestions at this time. As you said above "Your answer is very (=too) technical". I wouldn't want to aggravate you. Besides how can you get more technical and in the good graces of CR4 with a experiment title of Experimental Experiment?

As for the spaghetti (proper spelling, for once I got it right) thing we are fortunate that you wisely chose spaghetti and not linguine. If you look carefully you will notice that on their menu they do not offer it. If you had chosen linguine, your whole theory would be a bunch of sauce!

Thank you in advance for all your technical assistance,

The Experimental experiment library staff.

Good Luck, Old Salt

For a pre-emptive deflection, simply throw chain at the knees of the shooter.

Then run!

The amount of time that went into answering this question could've been used for something productive ... you know, something like "design a 1m long chain which can withstand being spun at 100,000 rpm and be strong enough to deflect a 50 cal bullet shot from 50 meters".

And yes, you can use any material for the chain.

Hmmmm.

Autobroker-

Yes I agree with you, the time spent could have be used better. There is General Hospital, One life to Live, The Price is right, Jersey Shore, The Swamp People, Pawn Brokers and many others beckoning for my time. The wife could also add paint the house, clean the basement out (my workshop), hang the curtains, empty the dishwasher, load the dishwasher, do the laundry but don't mix the colors and the whites (that makes white underwear pink if you wash them with jeans), wash the towels, take the garbage out, take the recycling to the curb, sweep the driveway, and many more arduous task that are not my favorite things. But good fortune has become my pal for the last two weeks, she in Florida with her family and it's just me and the dog at home.. The dog wakes me up for breakfast but lets me go back to sleep. The dog doesn't complain if I do those masculine things such as burp, flatulate, scratch my crotch, eat with my elbows on the table, walk around the house with bare feet and many other male traits. Best of all she gives me unconditional love.

We would like to consider chains of other materials but the OP specified steel. Since variable are to be kept to a minimum and stick to the original parameters of the experimental experiment that can not be done at this time.

We do thank you for your contributions to this scientific endeavor.

The Experimental Experiment Social Committee

Good Luck, Old Salt

you are welcome to design this project as you will. let's call it a open source.

I suggested the steel because it is rugged and strong, like Maraging steel or eglin steel.

Nano carbon tubes mixed with a titanium molybdenum cobalt are strong, but this material soup; lack one very important thing a mass/weight.

But you can use Tungsten/Tungsten carbide, but this material bill goes to your house...

Guds777-

Thank you for your permission, as OP, to offer to increase the parameters concerning the "Experimental Experiment of Chain Twirling and the Induced Effects of a Propelled Mass Introduction Into a Rotational Mass". As you can see the title for this experimental experiment is quite lengthy. To change it to include all types of materials for even metals, changes would bring the financial burden exponentially to the trillionth power. Since are on a specific budget, it is impossible to absorb such costs. To require so much power would be beyond the capacity of "Ohio Power". Also we doubt that our 16-3 SJO wire would be able to handle that load. On the other hand, if you make a commitment to the experimental experiment group for the increased costs we might consider an expanded experimental experiment. As is standard in legalese, your assumption of all costs, including beer, is not a guarantee that the experimental experiment will be expanded.

Unfortunately, the costs for any material purchases can be sent to my house. To assume this misdirection of the USPS for our highly confidential correspondence and financial receivables puts the experimental experiment at risk. My wife gets all the mail at the curb mailbox and has assumed that all funds received that are not hers go to her for therapeutic shopping. All bills go to me and even now I ain't got no money for beer!

Thank you for your permissions concerning this matter.

The Experimental Experiment Finance Controllers Committee, (da wifey)

Good Luck, Old Salt

Sometimes it's just so nice to have the house to yourself!

I've always wondered if this is insanity: we enjoy the time she's away, but we're miserable if she's not coming back?

Dear CR4 contributors to "A Scientific Question for You Guys "

It is with deep regret to inform you that we must postpone the field experimentation of the Experimental Experiment, otherwise known as "Experimental Experiment of Chain Twirling and the Induced Effects of a Propelled Mass Introduction into a Rotational Mass". This is necessary for several reasons:

The Waynesburg Police Dept, led by Fifal Barney, stated that his crew of 3 pOlice officers could not guarantee sufficient personnel to handle traffic let alone crowd control! His second reason was we had not put a contingency option in the town contract for the procurement of powered donuts.

Upon our arrival in Waynesburg, our liaison Darlin, of our research staff told the mayor that she wanted him to go over to her motel room and she would show him how to really twist chains. Unfortunately wasn't the mayor, it was the Mayor's wife. Very close resemblance though.

The coal mine under the town has been compromised by the drilling of fracking wells adjacent to the test site. Not only that but those fracking guys started a fire in the mine, just like Centralia, PA., and it burning for the past 50 years. We don't want to get involved with that sort of eager eagles that always cry "liability".

The local bars, road houses, gin mills, restaurant, pizza pallor's, barber shops (Yes there is one of them), massage parlors (2), and traffic light (1) could not handle the surge of people and necessary equipment. We finally told them that they are a bunch of wimps! At that point in negotiations one of their staff picked up an axe handle. We didn't know whether he wanted to mine coal or alter our bone structures. We ended up making a smart decision.

A sufficient supply of chain twirlers could not be found. We heard rumors about something like "Pigs can't fly, how can chains?" When a native picked up a chain and offered to show us how they throw and twist chains we declined. He had his eye on Darlin.

Many more factors were considered. The overall decision was to move the test or delay it until next month at another location.

Locations being considered (all in Ohio) are Minerva, Bayard, East Rochester, Magnolia, Atwood Lake, Nimishillen Twp., Malvern, Paris, Carrollton, Augusta, Salineville, Robertsville, or Louisville. We will notify you when plans are complete.

We would also like to take this opportunity to thank guds777 for starting this OP. We also recognize the contributions of Anonymous Hero, Holzfeller, Blue Aussieboy, micahdoz, Ronseto, James Steward, ronclark, Kendel, reward54, terraman, Solar Eagle, 1tech, epke, dymdsc Autobroker and last but not least Old Salt for submitting their ideas and scientific solutions for the experiment.. If we have missed anyone please let us know and we will arrange suitable recognition.

Thank you all for your support! Rumor has it that Old Salt may make a posting concerning why he orchestrated this experimental experiment. Oh boy, that guy should be wearing a cone shaped hat!

The Experimental Experiment Staff

Good Luck, Old Salt

We regret to inform all contributors that we misspelled MICAHD02 as micahdoz. This error was do our habit of using the symbol of z for the letter z and 2 for the number 2. We are so used to seeing the misshaped 2 being used for the letter that we completely misspelled the name. May we be condemned in Purgatory until the experimental experiment is concluded. MICAHDO02/micahdoz we are sorry, and we are sure this endeavor would not have progressed as far as it has without you contributions. For this we humbly genuflect to you.

We also apologized to Old Salt for calling him "Old Sh_t" but he didn't care, he said he gets called that daily! If anyone else was omitted or misspelled please let us know. We will make a suitable apology for the grievous error. If we got your name correct also let us know. Its been along time since we have been correct enough to give ourselves a pat on the back!

The Experimental Experiment Social Committee

Good Luck, Old Salt

Cone-shaped hat? Of Tin-foil. Definitely tin-foil.

micahdo2-

Sorry, too many cell towers around. Spurious radiation within the assigned frequencies and an aluminum hat are not compatible. The phenomenon which causes grid leaks to require drip pans and swinging chokes to require hinges could cause gamma ray exposure to the the frontal lobes! That would be bad!

Also, what do think we are? Were a bunch of chain twirlers and everyone knows that chain twirlers only wear hard hats (OSHA 29CFR1920.809)

Thank you but sorry on this one!

Old Salt; I am under the impression you take this scientific excercise not seriously, I am sure that Lyndoor industries would like to license this product to supply this to our agencies that are under fire from all sides.

Epke-

Quite the contrary, I take this exercise seriously but I am also a realist with a little bit of humor mixed in. As I stated in my earlier posts, its is a good concept but not workable at this time. Possible, probably at some time the future after extensive R + D, especially the D. Practical, with the technology of the current level, NO. It will take more than what we have now and in the foreseeable future.

Along this note, I took it as an opportunity to take the momentum of science and engineering and applying it to a farcical and improbable, but not impossible, scenario. Most persons who participate in these forums can produce extremely smart answers if given well defined and complete questions. Also most of them have a sense of humor at one time or another. This appeared to be the opportunity to meld these various personal traits and apply them in a somewhat humorous and sustainable fun scenario. With that I took the ball and ran with it, let's have some fun with ourselves. Not all of the items listed are fictional. Lehman57 can confirm that there is a Waynesburg, Ohio. All the other towns are real. The restaurant is real. The RR tracks are real. Several of the bars are real. Yes, there is a Minerva, OH. It is the birthplace of my father, a brilliant engineer in his field, but also a guy who liked a good laugh! Waynesburg is my mother's birth place.

Why do I say all this you ask. Well some of engineers and scientists need a good laugh to keep our sanity. Also we need to communicate and this was an opportunity for everyone to follow the scientific and engineering prescribed methods but have some fun with what we do in our sometimes methodical and routine lives. You can't help but do it if you want to reach my age!

In summary, Laughter Is The Best Medicine! Life is too fragile to waste it on being serious all the time. For confirmation of this, ask any engineer/scientist who has had a heart attack, or two, or three. Enjoy life to its fullest, including humor! Even geekish nerds who still carry slide rules and watches that are microcomputers can have some fun sometimes!.

What's madda? Ain't you ebber hurld 'bout da swing choke? That brilliant engineer in his field taught me that one!

This has been a lot of words which could have been wasteful of your time on my part but I and many others like a funny approach to a problem sometimes. It helps keep our sanity.

If you don't like this, simply use your "Delete" key. Remember though, my "Delete" key is much faster and can beat the crap out of yours!

Good Luck, Old Salt

OS:

I think Epke got it. Look up "Lyndoor Industries" in the search bar on your CR4 page, and you'll see why (unless YOU already got it, and were pulling his leg, AGAIN?).

I know I certainly enjoyed the humor. My kids called me "The Enginerd", growing up. My wife still does. But I enjoyed the humor, and especially got a kick out of the science of engineering applied to so much fun (after first determining what could not be done, as a valid answer to the OP, of course. We are, after all, RESPONSIBLE enginerds!)

Thanks for all your work on this.

Now, GET BACK TO WORK, YOU SLACKER. Or, if you are retired (envy you, and am planning to soon join you in this blissful state), at least try to LOOK like you have a real job, OK?

micahd02 and Epke-

My extreme apologies to you both. I was not familiar with "Lyndoor Industries" so it passed right by my cranial mass without any significance. Micahd02, I did as you suggested and looked it up on the search bar of CR4. All I got back was 6 pages of gobble-de-gook with no mention of Lyndoor Industries. Being the intelligent guy I am, I then went to the most scientific and engineering search engine of them all, Google! The results of that site listed it as the first suggestion! Apparently I must have been checking my eyelids for pin holes (spectrographic analysis of course) at the time. Since I was able to find the subject such a respected source of enlightenment I will no longer be forced to endure the purgatorial experience I would have committed to. (Hey, come on guys, give me a break, I'm just a worn out ole' engineer with gray hair, and a wife who must be somewhat crazy since she has stuck, or been stuck, with me for so long).

I really do enjoy the humor you have provided me with. There are some days I really need it! I hope I have provided you with some diversion from the mundane everyday frustrations and "Rush to get those reports in" priorities imposed by others. That is part of why I started this "project". I wanted to share some humor and perhaps bring some humor to others.

Life is too fragile to look at it in only a scientific or engineering way. There are some wonderful people out there that really care for you even though they have never met you or know of you personally. I learned that in a very dramatic and frightening way 3 years ago. As my fire department was approaching a fire they found me as a lump on the lawn. I had my 2nd heart attack! Only because of the trained people there who did what they had been trained to do and wanted to do, did they restart my heart that stopped for 6 minutes. Most of those people knew me and they started to think of me and pray. Ditto for the rest of the people involved. Many people who didn't know me or never knew of me were praying for me. One guy in another dept got on the radio and spoke to the pilot of the helicopter (I don't know how) and told him to "take care him, he's one of ours". Enough said, as you can see below this posting is my philosophy "Any day on the green side of the grass is a GREAT DAY! That is for me and all others that take the time to read a post of mine. I really mean it!

I again thank you for your contributions. I especially thank you because at the temporary hiatus of this "Experimental Experiment" you had the interest to post something to me thanking me for my time and efforts towards humor. I especially appreciate that. As a token of my appreciation I have given you GA's just as I attempted to give every contributor a GA. You guys are outstanding!

Also, if anyone is still interested, we still have a stack of autographed 8"x!0" glossies available. Go to the mail section, if you know how to, and give me your request and I will send you one. If by snail mail please give your e-mail, name and complete address. If by e-mail include your e-mail address and I will forward one by e-mail. There will be no other use of any information that is forwarded to me. I will shred it after preparing your "gift" and shred it. Sorry, I cannot forward you the shreds as confirmation. Besides, my brain is so scattered that anything that goes in it gets lost!

Epke, I apologize for my ignorance. I hope I didn't say anything that might have offended you.

Micahd0c- Thank you for bringing this to my attention.

Since I will probably be graced by numerous "OT"'s for this posting, I really don't care! My "Delete" key is faster than anyone else's and it can beat the cr_p out of yours!

Good Luck, Old Salt

" There are some wonderful people out there that really care for you even though they have never met you or know of you personally."

I gave this comment a GA. As cynical as I am, I still have found this to be a true statement.

Despite your statement otherwise, I never noticed you to be cynical. Your going to have to try harder!

And a GA in return to you! Thank you for your interest and reading what most people are like. Science and engineering shouldn't be all of lives

Good Luck, Old Salt
