98% Nitric Acid Storage Tank

01/08/2014 2:45 PM

Looking for US manufacturer of 98% nitric acid storage tanks. I understand that there is a Uranus S1 constructed storage tank in Europe.

What size? What configuration? What fittings on it? Is on-site final construction necessary? Available transportation? Much more information is necessary to give you a good answer.

If it around 4,000 to 5,000 gallons or you can receive shipments of that quantity use a DOT412 Road Trailer. It is made for Nitric Acid service and has the advantage that when you get to a lower volume level you can just swap the empty one for a full one. If you have the room for two trailers you can swap trailers with no potential wait for material. Get two tankers, use from and empty #1, switch over to #2 (will dual receiving stations), receive a full tanker and locate in spot #1, empty #2 and switch over to #1, receive a full tanker for spot #2, empty #1 and use #2 tanker, and so on.

This method is used throughout the industry. It saves on capital costs, operating cost and connections to and from the tankers can be done on a less restrictive schedule. You also don't have to maintain the storage tank. Your capacity is only limited by the number of unloading stations you have and how fast you can make your connections and disconnects. Need 20,000 gal per day, just schedule the tankers. Need 1,000 per day for a period of time, just schedule your tankers for less frequent deliveries. This method is also used very frequently with rail car tankers and multi unloading stations.

Good Luck, Old Salt

What a shame. There are several European manufacturers of plastic tanks.

google 98% nitric acid: Puritan fuming 98% nitric acid link

There are several others to consider as well. I have no idea about a Uranus S1 tank. Talk to Snyder tank, see what they can do for you. If you are going to store nitric acid of this high strength, there are many other considerations: scavenge system for the fumes that will obviously be a non-allowed fugitive emission if not captured, containment system for when a tank, valve, or line fails, or there is a human error, what type(s) of PPE will the employees have to have, and will it require HAZWOPR training (and it will), and SCBA certified chemical workers.

You should also ask yourself, once you have your plan in place, will an insurance carrier even look at this as reasonable risk?

Recently a chemical leak in West Virginia coal processing business, had a leak in a tank located next to a small river. The poisoned water forced hundreds of thousands of people to avoid using the water, shut down businesses and hotels, for about a week. This went way beyond an inconvenience and criminal charges are being considered.

On a related note, the whole idea of a Material Safety Data Sheet for chemicals is being reviewed. In more than 60,000 cases for chemicals used in industry, there is no long term data and up until now, this data has not been required. That includes nitric acid. The potential for liability is now in question. When a few people get sick and die, it is frequently considered to be a fluke. That could change in the near future. So, for the short term, it is best to take every reasonable precaution and then some just to be sure. For now, finger pointing is still very popular but not very scientific.

Phone the suppliers of <...98% nitric acid...> and pick their brains as to what they have seen and approved in the way of for receiving this material. These people won't deliver unless the installation is satisfactory.
