Warning! POLITICS (Belongs in the Break Room)

09/05/2014 3:14 PM

I don't discuss politics in this or any other forum. I keep my political opinions to myself until I enter the voting booth. With that said, it is election season again here in the US. The TV stations are filled with the usual political advertisements for candidates running for various offices. Adds with nothing but mud slinging, half truths or downright lies, and vague statements and promises that actually say nothing.

I got to thinking, "WHAT IF?"

What if we chose our representatives in government, not by election, but by a random draft from a pool of qualified (what ever that might mean) citizens? Service would be mandatory and limited to one term in office.

Could this be any worse than what we have now?

I know what you might be thinking. What if, by chance the person chosen turned out to be a crook, a drunkard, a philanderer?

I am in the United States, but I welcome comments from members in other nations.

I've never questioned their ultimate goal of coverting the entire globe to Islam. Many of them state it and are proud of it.

I believe this too:

We must admit facts instead of hiding it.

Facts may be seen, heard, read or experienced(hardships/sufferings) not by listening to superpowers & governments.

Pnaban: Wrong they are socialists or communists. Capitalism when practiced by either becomes what we are currently calling "crony capitalism", aka corruption. That is when the capitalist, rather than making a better mousetrap bribes a group of politicians. That is the point of this thread, trying to discern a better way to diminish this effect. Ben Franklin warned about it, as did some anonymous writer "Democracy can only exist until a majority of voters can vote themselves largess out of the public treasury". As we are at 47% and climbing we will be looking for Sri Lanka to pay us back in the near future.

Then you or your children will really have something to cry about. To my knowledge the only contribution to the human race provided by Sri Lanka was that is/was the residence of author A.C. Clark.

I realize you like the UN. In a former life, I lived and worked in NYC, the UN is a major source of traffic jams. Later I moved to the South Fork of LI, many of those "citidiots" had summer rentals out there. (you could tell by the diplomatic plates). They are an arrogant ill mannered breed to say the least. Maybe if everyone on this forum writes their CongressCritter, we could get the UN to relocate, destination ........................ you fill in the blank.

I don't like to get up on a soap box (that's permitted in the USA without fear of incarceration) but- What is your overall plan with all these rants and abuse of other's viewpoints concerning the rights of all people on this earth? You aren't being very creative, the same thing is said each time there is a topic that you see the slightest opportunity to bash all the nations that have struggled to win their independence and have grown from there to become wonderful places to live. Are you willing to give your life for your fellow citizens of Sri Lanka in order to have freedom of speech? In the USA many friends, brothers, sisters, fathers, cousins, distant relatives, and many other people who are not directly known to individuals have given their lives for the freedoms our country's people have? We miss them all. God bless them.

It is time you put away the worn out rubber stamp. I and many others, as the blog indicates, are tired of your persistent accusations. You have the freedom of speech on it because it is here in the USA, not Sri Lanka.

The postings of:

Re: Rich Engineers?

Re: Are You a Terrorist (But Didn't Know It)?

Re: Trillions and Trillions of Devices Everywhere

Re: Warning! POLITICS (Belongs in the Break Room)

were all posted within the last year and each had the same theme, The USA is the most corrupt nation in the world and has $hit for brains including politicians, engineers and everyone else within its borders. Also the UN is physically located within New York City but it is it's own nation. Don't blame them, the USA was the only nation that gave them the space. Even the ambassador to the UN from Sri Lanka doesn't have to pay for parking tickets or speeding tickets in the US. How kind of the USA!

I'm off my soap box now so face reality. The world isn't yet what your entries have expressed and never will be.

Again, I am an American and proud of it! There isn't any place on earth as good as here to live. If I want changes I work for them and don't have to fear that the guy next to me is an "agent" and going to kill me where I stand saying I was a political threat.

To all others. this isn't the approach I prefer to post but I've got a bug up my a$$ about those that are quick to bash the USA but have no realist way of curing the world's problems they speak of. THANKS

Good Luck, Old Salt

I am just commenting on the fate of freedom fighters, who laid down their lives and were sentenced to jail. Our present day politicians have forgotten them. Here is my personal experience:- My both parents were freedom fighters from Karachi ( now in Pakistan). They were jailed in 1930s, after partition of India they migrated to Mumbai (India). They lost their teaching job including all benefits, their house, and land. Came to Mumbai just with bare hands. After struggling a lot they got teaching jobs, smaller house and just survived. But to-day's politician here are flourishing with the money all ill earned.

I think we can all agree that a majority of politicians, the world around, are engaged in some type of corruption. There are good ones, but not a lot of them.

Best countries are Canada,Scandinavian countries,Germany etc. Anyone who approaches a superpower to coverup their crimes should not be accepted as good nation. Worse than that is superpowers creating satellite states in different parts of the world as their Princes & authorise to intervene in neighbours' politics by suppressing human rights in those countries.

These are politicians, even if they are technocrats drawn from a hat. They wouldn't make themselves available otherwise. They all seek personal power and enrichment.

Don't believe a word is the only way to go. If he changes his underwear daily, he 's probably one up on the opposition...
