Hemmings Motor News Blog

Hemmings Motor News has been around since 1954. We're proud of our heritage, but we're also more than the Hemmings full of classifieds that your father subscribed to. Aside from new editorial content every month in Hemmings, we have three monthly magazines: Hemmings Muscle Machines, Hemmings Classic Car and Hemmings Sports and Exotic Car.

While our editors traverse the country to find the best content for those magazines, we find other oddities related to the old-car hobby that we really had no place for - until now. With this blog, we're giving you a behind-the-scenes look at what we see and what we do during the course of putting out some of the finest automotive magazines you'll ever read.

Want a 600-hp Camaro with a Warranty?

Posted September 02, 2009 12:01 AM by dstrohl

With some of GM's factory performance programs on the back burner, a Chevrolet dealer and a performance tuning shop in upstate New York have taken it upon themselves to turn up the heat.

DeNooyer Chevrolet in Albany, N.Y. and Redline Motorsports in nearby Schenectady have joined forces to build what muscle car enthusiasts might call the modern interpretation of the Baldwin-Motion SS 427 Camaros — but these fuel-injected, emissions-friendly street, strip and track-day terrors are pumping out in the neighborhood of 600hp and plans are in the works for even larger power gains using turbochargers and superchargers.

In 1967, I wanted a new car, I wrote a spec that said I wanted an XK120 but also, a big station wagon as I planned to work on contract around the country. I wanted disc brakes, I has them on my cars in England. I went out and ordered Camaro RS, 327, 4 barrel. I rented a U haul trailer when I had to move.

Nice!

I wish they would put the 600 Hp engines in the 3/4 and 1 ton pickups instead.

I had a honest rated 400+ Hp in a heavy half ton a few years ago. That was still fun to drive even though it was a work pickup. So 600 hp in a bigger pickup would seem about right in my book!

Never cared for the sports cars myself. If it cant do an honest days work I don't want it.

Yes, that's one approach to a fast fun car, and likely a good investment. However, there are lower cost alternatives. Supercharging with either a Callaway package, or by installing your own Eaton supercharger will get you in this horsepower range with the stock engine, and at lower cost. I would prefer to start with a Corvette than a Camero.

If it works, this will be this generations Yenko or Baldwin-Motion for sure. I would be suprised if in 30 years these cars will be fetching something in the 6-figure range, easy. That is of course....if it works....

I've driven past Redline many many times. Cant say the appearance of the building, or the P.O.S. cars typically in thier lot have given me any encouragement to stop in and see what they can do with one of my "babies". For me, warrentee or not, I just dont want to have to worry about the potential headache if things go wrong and that place goes belly up.

Warranties are only as good as they are written and the company backing them up.

The increase in HP has two issues:

1. When you have it, you tend to use it and most don't know the difference between use and abuse.

2. Unless the rest of the drive train is over-designed (not likely these days) you are possibly pushing or exceeding the design limits and it is difficult to distinguish between failures from this or abuse for warranty purposes.

Good rule (especially if you are going to race it) is to upgrade working backwards from the wheels (not starting with the engine).

My knowledge and experience comes not from me but my oldest son, an ASE Certified Master Tech who builds and races drag cars (in addition to owning and operating two businesses) in NH. My current primary residence is MD (Eastern Shore), but I also have home in NH (for when I retire).

Thanks for the good words.

I have seen these cars in in person and they are the real deal. Brings me back to the 60's.

I have lived in the area a long time and DeNooyer Chevrolet has been a dealer in this area for I think over 30 plus years. I think they are solid for sure.

Although I have never met him personally I have heard alot of good things about the guy that is running the peformance divison. He races cars local and many people say he is really easy to talk with and is passionate about the cars he represents.

I have been by redline performance as well and I think the guy that made the comment about the facility needs to have his eyes checked. It is right next to their other glass business and it is a very nice facility. They always have crazy corvette's and camaro's out front that I assume they are building for customers. maybe the guy with the earlier post drives a honda.

Anyone can slap on modified parts. but we know what you get 0 warranty. their 3yr warranty is definately attractive. 600 plus HP daily driver for a decent price with a warranty. I like that.

I can say one thing. I personally would rather buy a modified car from a Chevrolet dealer. I think it is great that a business in my home town is trying to bring back the old days of baldwin and yenko. It is about time a dealer got in the game and I wish them a ton of luck..A++ for starting this venture.
