Heatballs - Unintended Consequences of Regulation

Posted February 18, 2011 8:00 AM by Milo

Gotta love the entrepreneurial spirit of engineers vs. the bureaucratic regulators (aka Forces of Evil…)

To improve energy efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, the EU has banned the sale of incandescent light bulbs of over 60 watts.

Enter the engineers.

Engineer Siegfried Rotthaeuser studied the EU legislation and realised that because the inefficient old bulbs produce more warmth than light they could be sold legally as heaters.

Rotthaeuser is legally importing and distributing 75 and 100 watt light bulbs — by producing them in China, importing them as "small heating devices" and selling them as "heatballs".

What is the Heatball Manifesto?

A heatball is electrical resistance, used as a heater.

Heatball is a campaign of opposition against regulations being passed that bluntly ignore the most basic democratic principles.

Heatball also resists unreasonable measures supposedly protecting our natural environment.

How can we be made to believe that using energy saving lamps will save our planet, while at the same time the rain forests have been waiting in vain for decades for effective sustainable protection?

Heatball is electrical (and political) resistance.

Viva la resistance!

And we're a fan!

Now if only they could buy them from us here in the US…

Sounds just about like what gets done with every other bureaucratic and government regulated compound, or device.

Rename it and focus the new marketing on another aspect of its design and now its completely legal to own and use once again.

That's a really bright idea.....har har

Don't be surprised if this isn't over. I could see the bureaucrats reclassifying the Heatballs and taxing them at a rate so high that no one would buy them.

I like the theme of your blogs lately Milo. Stupidity must be exposed, and cannot be allowed to prevail. Good job.............let me know when it's time to start hoarding incandescent bulbs and stashing them in my basement.

Not yet. But I'm thinking it wouldn't hurt to pick up a box or two on my Walmart trips here and there. They last so much longer than CFLs, it wouldn't take that many to last a lifetime.

nearly right there kramarat...

they banned the heatballs in a local German court

http://freedomlightbulb.blogspot.com/2011/07/update-on-heat-balls.html

they are still (end 2011) trying to get together and finance a complaint in a higher court...)

.

btw from balls to condoms, as it were...

another German (inventive aren't they!)

figured out a way to get round theEuropean ban on clear incandescents by

putting condoms on the bulbs

http://freedomlightbulb.blogspot.com/2011/12/screwing-eu-with-condom-again.html

(in the typical over-lobbied bureacratic and sometimes corrupt EU they immediately banned all clear bulbs including Halogens on the notion that "people can buy CFLs" - the lobbying profit-seeking manufacturers of course had nothing to do with this decision ;-) )

Indeed, I need 100W incandescents to illumiate my arrow speed chronometer as flourescents flicker and give a miss read. I had to buy them over the interweb.

On the other hand my electricity bill is lower than last year, maybe due to going over to CFLs, but of course a I can barely see to read anymore.

Aha! Problem solved. I will certainly be pursuing the 'heatball' approach when/if the day comes that they are banned in Canada! Lovely little heaters and the waste light is an acceptable byproduct.

Arf! I guess something was lost added in the translation.

We'd better call them 'heat globes' or 'decorative light emitting heaters' or something. Some nanny-driven fool could make a lawsuit out of it (poor soul ) .

Let's avoid mistaking the first part as a verb and call them:

Hotballs

much improvement. It's like a built in warning, instead of an invitation to a warming. That'll keep em out of court!

Imported from China you say? That would be through customs would it not. Well then there have been a number of violations commited, and knowingly as well. The fines once Customs gets around to investigating will put this plan out of business in no time. A rose by any other name is still classified under 0602.40

In the world of legaleeze you cannot change the essential character of a product by simply changing the name. Good try though.

Rats! I was really hoping Milo had scored one for the little guy with this.

Apparently he's in trouble with the customs now...see the site you link to (http://heatball.de/en/) (link no longer available)

There's a wider irony about the Light Bulb Heat Effect....

US Dept of Energy etc call light bulb heat a "significant problem" as regards room cooling with air conditioning, yet at the same time ridicule the effect as "irrelevant" with regard to room heating.
On http://ceolas.net/#li6x the extent of the effect, with references, is looked at
