One EV That I’m Excited About

Posted April 12, 2011 8:30 AM by Milo

Here's an Electric Vehicle to make you say, "Why didn't I do that?"

Unbelievable performance

Here's some specs:

  • 60″ tall
  • 39″ wide
  • 0-60 in 3.8 seconds
  • Nascar Roll Cage FIA certifed to 200 mph
  • 56 degree rollover threshold- same as a Porsche 911
  • 3150 pounds curb weight
  • Range - 100 miles using lead acid batteries. 87 mpg equivalent.
  • 1000 lbft of combined torque
  • 2000 amp 350 volts ~ 600 kw; 805 input hp

At $150,000 probably certainly out of our range, but not too bad from a guy who self-describes as being "Too dumb to know it couldn't be done."

Awesome video!

The battery must be hidden right behind where it says "Exide," making the CG quite low. Ugly as hell, but what a pocket rocket!

!!

The video is a hoot! That guy sure has his practicals down, formal education be damned. I still think the appearance is quaint, but what a gas (or non-gas) to drive!

Thanks for sharing this.

I would like to have seen the video, but it is in some format which does not work with the modest-to-slow download speeds I have available (there is NO cable around here; the companies serving areas a few miles away upgrade existing customers so that they can justify raising rates, but won't spend a dime to add new areas). With no time-bar, I can't wait for it to stutter it's way to near the end, and then set it back to play through, as I can with most video clips. The result, with breaks every second or two at best, is unintelligible and unwatchable. I do realize that that is not your fault; I've already sent a nastygram to the perpetrators at Translogic.

Your phone company doesn't offer DSL?

No - not where I live. They do within a much shorter radius of the physical exchange, only - but people living there can access cable. The phone company's cables are undergound and subject to flooding (three years ago, we lost phones for miles around, for example). Those cables have not been upgraded in any way since they were installed, and that was long before I bought this house about 33 years ago. When I had a second phone line installed to dedicate to the computer about ten years back, the opening of the junction box out by the road triggered a shutdown of several lines including our original one; the already thirty-year-old PVC was so dried out that the solid wires were making contact when it fell away in broken bits.

On a good day, dial-up yielded 20+ kilobaud connections; in several years, the record was 32 kB for a few minutes. The phone company offered a guarantee of just 14 kB (and didn't always reach it!). Now we have a little Yagi up on a mast, and are a few miles from the transceiver, so have much better connections, but 100 - 200kB is normal. Good thing that I never had aspirations to become an on-line gamer, eh?

I agree... I would even give it 1.5 hoots (a hoot-and-a-half, as I have heard it said)

I almost expected to see wheelie bars! Did you see the lane sharing? Pickup mirrors whizzing past your head at 50 MPH.

Very cool!

Dam ugly and small though.

Make it twice as wide and twice as long in a four door version and put 4x the battery's in it with an honest 6 -8 inch's ground clearance for around $50K - 60K and then I would consider it a good all around vehicle.

Plus a two door pickup version of the above dimensions would be a nice addition two.

My first thought on this, coming from a guy who builds "Elco" electric boat propulsion systems, for me, it's too tall. But after seeing the car on the road. Ya have to be tall to be seen at 39" wide. Talk about parking eze.

The only thing keeping me from building an electric car on a 4'X8'X42" frame is being seen by others. But on the other hand, the only time that would come into play would be getting caught up at a red light. The rest of the time I would be way far ahead of anyone behind me. It's that dam stop. They've been promising round abouts all over this area. Just hasn't happened yet. Last muscle car 1969 Mach 1, 351 Cleveland, 4 dbl brl holly, hookers, 4 spd turbo, top speed unknown, I set 185 1/4 ml, had to back off. Steering was not so good, got scary and so loose. Ford really screwed up there. But, put 285,000 miles on it. Kikkin my a$$ since. Could be $$ Now.

I have been looking hard at the Smart cars. Just for in our little town. On days when I don't want to pedal the recumbent. I saw them in Switzerland a few yerars back and thought they were the perfect in town grocery and band concert kind of vehicle.

The first thing the Smart Car people tell you is to not pull all the way into a parking space. Keep it back so people can see it. If you pull all the way in, people think the space is empty and pull in unti-crash-l it's too late.

The design thinking that went into this little EV was really impressive. Thanks for all the comments Gang.

That "not pull all the way into the parking space" mindset is one you acquire quickly as a motorcycle rider!!!

Great video.
it seems to show up an inexplicable gap between the 'big' car manufacturers and the small guys.
I was looking at EV prices and there still isn't a smallish city car which is practical at an even vaguely competitive price.
I'm sure we could be further down the EV route if there was more will.
Ok it's a city car, but anyone living in a city/town will tell you they are congested.

Awesome! I like the snowplow capability!

I agree Del, there's no good reason for an idea like this not to succeed...until they add all the bells and whistles to bring the price from $29K to $49K because... we just gotta have 17 cup holders, USB connection, built in GPS, iPhone, iPad, 13way power-heated-leather seats, and it has to pull the camper too!

I wish they would just build a true "stripper" on any platform these days. It's amazing all the "things" that come with a basic car these days.

The going price is a hundred and fifty thousand bucks! $150,000.00. Yikes!

But he said that he could get it down to about $29K with enough investment and production.

Oh, OK. I missed that part.

If they can be at a price point of about $29K, that would certainly make them within reach of many. As you say, add a sunroof and bump the price another $3K!
