Hemmings Motor News Blog

Hemmings Motor News has been around since 1954. We're proud of our heritage, but we're also more than the Hemmings full of classifieds that your father subscribed to. Aside from new editorial content every month in Hemmings, we have three monthly magazines: Hemmings Muscle Machines, Hemmings Classic Car and Hemmings Sports and Exotic Car.

While our editors traverse the country to find the best content for those magazines, we find other oddities related to the old-car hobby that we really had no place for - until now. With this blog, we're giving you a behind-the-scenes look at what we see and what we do during the course of putting out some of the finest automotive magazines you'll ever read.

The 1969 Camaro: Best Chevrolet of All Time?

Posted September 19, 2011 9:36 AM by dstrohl

As part of the Chevrolet centennial celebration festivities, Chevy fans were asked to vote for the best Chevrolet of all time. The result? The 1969 Camaro.

The last of the first generation F-bodies earned 25,058 of 124,368 votes cast. The next top vote getter was the 1970 Chevelle SS with 18,449 votes.

Tom Peters, Chevrolet Design director, said he believes the '69 Camaro is not only one of the best vehicles in Chevrolet's history but one of the best vehicles ever. He is a little biased, however, having owned the same 1969 Camaro for nearly 20 years.

"I can vividly remember seeing one for the first time as a kid," Peters said. "The intent of the Camaro was instantly understood, even to a 14-year-old like me, because it possessed a very powerful personality and an elegant, simple design. The Camaro was so cool because it offered this great style, high performance, and yet was attainable for someone just getting out of school."

I have to agree with the voting, especially if the '69 Camaro is a Z-28 equipped with a 302 block and a 4-speed manual trannie!!!! Love those set of wheels since I was a young lad!!!!!

What? No votes for the Volt?

I think I would have picked the split window Corvette.

Why did they have to go so wrong with the new Camaro? The dash is so hidious I passed on a convertable and got a sweeter looking Challenger instead. Sorry for the off-topic remark about the new Camaro. My neighbor had a 69 Z-28 he bought new while in the Army. It had the 302 with the four speed manual, black interior, blue exterior, black vinyl top. He raced it at the track, and when he fired it up in the garage, everyone on the block knew.

Still, why did Chevy have to screw up the new one so bad?

I had a 68 Camaro RS from new in October 67. I didn't see anything better in the 69s.
