Hemmings Motor News Blog

Hemmings Motor News has been around since 1954. We're proud of our heritage, but we're also more than the Hemmings full of classifieds that your father subscribed to. Aside from new editorial content every month in Hemmings, we have three monthly magazines: Hemmings Muscle Machines, Hemmings Classic Car and Hemmings Sports and Exotic Car.

While our editors traverse the country to find the best content for those magazines, we find other oddities related to the old-car hobby that we really had no place for - until now. With this blog, we're giving you a behind-the-scenes look at what we see and what we do during the course of putting out some of the finest automotive magazines you'll ever read.

It's Happened Again: Fontana Drags Suspended

Posted March 08, 2012 9:00 AM by dstrohl

You're not hallucinating. Another facility that hosts automotive competition in Southern California has been silenced. This time, a Superior Court judge ordered drag racing halted at Auto Club Dragway in Fontana. Immediately, the complex issued a media release announcing that its Street Legal program scheduled for this Saturday is canceled.

Two observations: First, racing in Southern California as a whole has been ravaged over the past several months by seemingly unstoppable forces, led by evident ennui for the sport among the region's giant population. Drag racing was a small part of the action at Auto Club Speedway, built around its centerpiece 2.0-mile oval. It lost one of its NASCAR Sprint Cup dates because of lagging attendance. The same issues were among those that recently claimed historic Orange Show Speedway in San Bernardino, Victorville Speedway and the showplace half-mile Irwindale Speedway, which also had a drag strip.

The second observation is the larger scope of this whole phenomenon as the region's population has grown unchecked and its economy has transitioned. The welter of automotive and aviation fabrication shops that were once a breeding ground for local racing have been grossly diminished. The San Bernardino Sun compiled a list of drag strips that have closed. They include Saugus, Colton, Fontana, the original Irwindale (no affiliation with the more recently closed speedway), San Gabriel, LIONS in Long Beach, High Desert in Palmdale, San Fernando, Ventura Dragway and Terminal Island, the last opened by "Big Willie" Robinson and his Brotherhood of Street Racers.

Eras come and eras go. They always have and they always will. As the article points out, the general public has become bored with the expensive sport of automotive racing in Southern California. One must move with the times or be left behind.

I agree with your comment.

When this sort of thing fades away, there is usually a small but vocal minority lamenting the premature demise of some favorite event/pastime.

I have seem a few of these suspended events rise from their own ashes, only to die due once again to lack of financial support. Lack of financial support comes directly from lack of interest or participation at the previous scale. If these events continued to be money makers they would not have been have cancelled in the first place.

Yeah, the ol' chariot racing went the same way, and not many people practice with the longbow every Sunday (I believe the law requiring it in the UK was never taken off the statute book).
On a more serious note I think its good to have places where kids can play with cars off the public roads, but all too often facilities get taken over by guys with deep pockets and beurocrats instead.
