Getting Buzzed Might Get You Bit

Posted July 21, 2013 12:00 AM by Chelsey H

Unfortunate news beer lovers: you may need to start enjoying your drinks inside this summer. A study reveals that beer drinkers attract more mosquito bites!

Over the past few years, several studies were done in different countries and each experiment came to the same conclusion. That as little as one beer will make you significantly more attractive to mosquitoes than those who aren't drinking.

According to a French study, the mosquitoes were roughly 30 percent more attracted to the beer drinkers.

Although it's still a mystery why beer attracts mosquitoes, researchers are considering many reasons. French researchers hypothesize that mosquitoes know that people who have consumed alcohol will be slower to notice bugs or defend themselves from bites. A more scientific hypothesis is that the attraction is linked to the amount of ethanol in sweat or the fact that alcohol raises body temperature. Neither one of these conclusions correlated with the mosquito landings in the study so the attraction is still a mystery.

In case you're not a beer drinker, don't worry - mosquitoes don't discriminate too much. Besides exercise and metabolism, clothing color, and pregnancy, here are 10 ways to guarantee you'll get a mosquito bite.

Getting Buzzed Might Get You(r) Bit

So the strategy is to make sure the folks around you are drinking beer.

I wonder if setting a dish containing beer, at a distance of 10 or 20 feet away from where I set, will lure the mosquitoes away from me.

I saw recently (here at CR4?) that one way to get rid of fruit flies in your kitchen is to pour a few inches of apple cider vinegar into a glass and then add a few drops of dish washing liquid. The cider attracts the fruit flies and when they land on the surface the dish washing liquid makes them sink and drown.

Beer has whaeat in it and when you drink the beer it turns to sugar at a greater rate than sugar does in your blood. Read the book Wheat Belly and you will understand why mosquitos will bit you if you drink beer. 1 tablespoon of sugar will raise your hypoglycemic index by .56 and two slices of bread will raise your hypoglycemic index by 1.76 and I do not know how much beer wil raise it but you end up drinking more wheat than you would get in 2 slices of bread.

Blond females were found to be their favourite snack also, and on a holiday in Africa, with a blond female, I put on no repellant, wore just a skirt (like the Masai), took no anti malarial, never got bitten.

She took every precaution, ended up looking like a second-hand dartboard

This is interesting. Years ago, when I was working with the Boy Scouts, they put out a bulletin that a certain kind of B vitamin would cause mosquitos to go away. It worked, but the boys smelled like they were old drunks. I can't remember the particular B, it might have been B6 or B12 or anything else, but it did work, so I wonder what would happen if you took your BXX with Beer? I hate the idea of giving up beer. At the same time we also discovered that if you washed with plain Ivory or Castile soap, then the mosquitos went to the people who used deodorant soap or who didn't shower at all and left you alone. It doesn't work if everyone uses the non-deodorant soap. You need someone to attract the mosquitos.

We also found that some of the commercial, so called repellants actually seemed to attract the mosquitos. I am now in the west and although we do have mosquitos, you can count the number you see in a month on one hand. Maybe because it takes over a week to hatch a mosquito and a bucket of water can evaporate in about a day or two.

They make some beers without putting wheat in them. Also read the book Sugar Blues as it talks about getting offf of sugar and when you do the mosquitos will not bit you. I do not eat sweets and they do not bother me at all and they cover up my friends when we are out.

Those researchers aren't very smart. They missed a critical piece of information...

We know from many other studies that one of the primary attractants for mosquitoes, is CO2.

What is carbonation?

Carbonation = Carbon dioxide dissolved in a liquid. Whether it is water (seltzer), soda, champagne or beer, dissolved carbon dioxide is the component of the drink that gives it fizz and some added taste (bittering). It is a natural by-product of fermentation that is produced by the yeast involved. This makes it the natural compound for use in beer.

Drinking beer in hot summer weather, not only increases sweating, but the people that are drinking, are warmer. Due to the carbonation in beer, increased levels of CO2 are not only being breathed into the air, but the dissolved CO2 is escaping through the pores of the skin.

I think it could be postulated, that when mosquitoes catch the scent of a person drinking beer, (or possibly other alcoholic beverages), they know that they not only have a ripe target, but that the blood tends to flow more readily.

That concludes the kramarat study. Cheers.

The metabolizing of alcohol in the body produces large amounts of CO2 which is being expelled also. The increased sweating of the body caused by alcohol increase other chemical attractants.

You beat me to it on the CO2 and warmth.

I don't think the mosquitoes have sufficient brain power to "know" anything about blood flow until after they've penetrated the skin.
