How Practical Is Voicemail-to-Text Conversion?

Posted January 12, 2008 8:33 AM

Among the latest wireless services for cell phones is a feature that allows users to convert their voicemail messages to text messages. Although it may come in handy for some who don't answer calls when in meetings, on appointments, etc., others probably won't justify it on a cost-performance basis. Would you or your employer be willing to pay a scalable monthly fee for "X" conversions per month? How would such a service save you time, if any?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Acoustics & Audio Technology, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Acoustics & Audio Technology today.

the fee is the killer as the handset lacks the smarts to do this, so the task must go to the central computer, which will need to be trained to your voice and will take time and only be 90-95% effective. If you can pay and tolerate this error rate, let the market decide.

No buyers = it dies/

Voicemail-to-text conversion is great for people who are deaf or hard-of-hearing (there are many people who do fit this classification), and the person leaving the message is unaware of the receiver's condition. This is also when retrieving messages in noisy locations, where the message could not be heard.
