Is Green the Thing?

Posted August 06, 2008 8:05 AM

More benign materials, earth-friendly displays, more efficient displays — a lot of leading manufacturers are hyping their environmental credentials, whether they deserve them or not. Do manufacturers actually believe that environmental stewardship is important or are marketing departments merely jumping on the green bandwagon? Is it just another instance of the need for product differentiation that already gave us jewel-encrusted cell phones and ridiculously large televisions? Is green technology the real thing? Or do you think that price is not just nice — it's the single most critical feature of a display?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Display Technologies, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Display Technologies today.

The word green is a new marketing tool to boost sales.can any body explain diesel engine emission norms as on to day and cost of new generation engines claiming they are green god knows How.take the example of 5megawatt engine which cannot be tested at factory as per ISO standards for emissions on load,at field its even difficult to test emissions because ambient conditions play vital role on combustion and emissions if these engines are using HFO or bunker c what would be the emissions there is no consistent fig available then what is the meaning green this is just one example.in India unleaded gasoline was introduced to control emission Now all oil companies are selling premium Gasoline at Higher price but don't disclose what is premium gasoline how much NOx,CO is released by using premium gasoline the biggest joke is gold rating for buildings there is no system in place in India to rate the windows and they use expensive lowE and high performance glass for glazing when you calculate the heat loads with U values declared for these low E and high performance glass with double the U values against specified by ASHRAE ,requiring double the size of plant calculated as per ASHRAE requiring &Double the electrical power required to operate then what is significance certifying a building with gold rating except higher cost of building, higher operating cost in addition lot of discomfort to end users.this the green i am observing hence green means more green backs to manufacturers and green council in India i don't know how it is in other parts of world.

Green is the new word. Back at the turn of the century (1900's) it was all about synthetics. We were trying to use new materials so that we could get away from natural recourses (wood, cotton, wool), now it has come full circle, we need to use "natural" "earth friendly" products. I do believe it is the new thing and marketing ploys. Plus with all the advertising and news reports, we are made to think that we must go green. When plastics and synthetics were being developed they were to be recycled, at that time because the were expensive to produce. Being made of material that can be broken down to the basic building blocks and rebuilt. That was what was intended of plastics and polymers. But it all become cheap and disposable. So the technology was never developed to have affordable recycling. Now we are "paying " for it one way or another. I look to see the "green" movement to last about 10 years or so the taper off to a dull roar. Things are only "sustainable" as long as supply and demand are kept in check. I say ride the wave and make as much money as you can. And but stock in Dupont and Specpol.

You really have to do your home work because there is no truth in advertising. One mans environmentally friendly product is another's bane.

So does "green" mean: color, money, bi-om benign, or other?

How about products that have positive bi-om impact.

The hokiest "green" claim I have seen so far is a vodka ad:

http://www.vodka360.com/ageverify.php?accesscheck=index.php

They claim it is "eco-responsible". Maybe by drinking a quart of it you will not be in shape to drive your SUV.
