Wired Relaibility or Wireless Rage?

Posted September 16, 2008 8:31 AM

Articles about running cable in your home to network personal computers and entertainment devices raises an interesting question. The premise is wired networks have a place in the home because wireless networks don't have the bandwidth to support the traffic. That may be true now, but it won't be long before wireless networks will have the capacity. That being the case, is it really worth it to install a wired network in your home? What do you think?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Wire & Cable Technology, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Wire & Cable Technology today.

Wired, wired, wired, wired, wired.

Oh, by the way did I mention I'd go for wired?

Actually.... that's NOT "the case"!

Who are you to say where the speed/bandwidth frequencies of RF and "copper/fiber networks" are today? Not to mention where we venture tomorrow.

For most consumers, there will soon come a time when wireless speeds are fast enough, when there is enough bandwidth, for home use. With the advent of 4G, that is almost certainly the case.

However, until it is widely available and reliable, I'm sticking with wire.

And I work for one of the companies promoting and providing wireless service!

Absolutely yes.

A wired network has a lot of security advantages. The problem with most wireless networks in the home is that everyone in the neighbourhood can access your network, steal bandwidth, and get free internet time on your dime.
