Camera to PC hook up.

03/29/2008 3:06 PM

Hi guys,

I'm working on a project and was hoping for a little guidance. I want to hook up a digital video (surveillance) camera to my laptop but I am unsure of the components needed to achieve this. Basically I want to send the cameras control signals and video to the pc but the only connectors I have are the rs-485 with about 6" of wire attached to it. Below are the instructions I have for the camera the actual video connector appears to be a co-axial connection (bnc). Can I run the controls and video into two separate usb ports? And if so what components and other considerations should I look out for, I apologize if I have not given enough detail but I will happily provide any further info needed. Thanks for your time and have a great weekend.

JJ

Your video is a BNC output, using a BNC to RCA converter or BNC to RCA cable, you may connect to a VCR or monitor. You need a PC interface to acquire the video.

RS485 is a serial communication standard like USB or RS232, not compatible with either without using an interface converter.

You will find both types of interfaces with USB to PC communication.

Hi,

Unless you have decided you must use the existing camera, you will find cameras that can be assigned an IP address on a LAN far simpler to set up and manage. If you wish, you can also have them wireless. DLink have good products in this area as I am sure do other manufacturers.

Thanks for your help so far guys. I am stuck with the camera I displayed in my first post so I have to make it work. I will look into x10 and the other site mentioned later this evening and report back with any news, thanks again.

Sounds like some kind of ModBus style addressable camera?
