Is the basement existing at present? If in planning create a flow-path for diverting the water around the structure.

If existing you need to estimate the problem first.

What is the inflow in wet seasons?

What size of sump is available or possible?

I personally prefer a big sump because that will allow you to manage / use the water for a positive purpose (I came from an arid part where water is in short supply).

A bigger pump is also advisable = shorter bursts and longer apart.

Flow diversion, enhanced drainage, and external waterproofing are also useful around the building below grade. The less water coming in, the less to be pumped out. It is also less of an inconvenience in the event of an electrical disruption.
