NGR Requirement

05/07/2008 3:37 AM

We have a power house of 9.8MW capacity. We are not sure about whether we need to install NGR or not. Some consultant says if your capacity is less than 10MW then there is no need for NGR installation, you just solidly ground your neutral.

Can any body help us to know what is the actual criteria for the use/installation of NGRs or is there any standard defined regarding this issue

Hello,

The requirement to NGR is to save your system from Heavy earth fault current. It is always advisable to have even High resistance type earthing for NGR, we can solidly ground the system but it will cost heavy breakdown & difficult to locate the earth fault in system.

In addition, Selection of NGR is irrespective of total plant capacity and must be calculated based on system voltage & Short circuit calculation of the system.

It is must for all systems, which is on high voltage side and may damage the system in case of earth fault.
