ABB ACS600 VFD TRIPPED BY DC OVER VOLT ALARM

12/08/2008 12:17 AM

My work place using the ABB ACS600 VFD controller to control 2.2 kw motor operated water pump, Once pump start the VFD will tripped & show the DC over volt alarm.

can some one let me know the why is problem cause the VFD tripe by DC over voltage and the system supply voltage is 440 Vac , VFD bus voltage is 596 V,Any soft copy of ABB ACS 600 VFD technical troubleshooting manual on line.

DC undervolt will trip at 0.6 *U* where U in the minimun value of the mains voltage range.

Intermediate DC voltage is not sufficient. This can be caused by missing mains phase in the diode rectifying bridge.

Check mains supply and the mains inverter fuses.

If the standard HW is used, chect the digital input DI2 is on, when the inverter is powered.

Of course, if the reasons given aren't the found cause, the drive would usually

be inspected in the workshop/on site for required repairs.

I can email the manual if you give me your email address. CR4 will not acept file, too large.

See chapter 9, DC undervoltage

I hope this helps

Below is the description from my ACS600 manual:

DC overvoltage trip limit is 1.3 ยทU1max, where U1max is the maximum value of the mains voltage range. For 400 V units, U1max is 415V. For 500 V units, U1max is 500 V. For 690 V units, U1max is 690 V. The actual voltage in the intermediate circuit corresponding to the mains voltage trip level is 728 V d.c. for 400 V units, 877 V d.c. for 500 V units, and 1210 V d.c. for 690 V units.

So either for some reason your DC bus voltage is spiking or your drive thinks that it's spiking. In a pump application I would be surprised to see your DC bus spike unless there was an issue with the VFD. I would suspect a control board type issue on the VFD but this is just a guess.

I have found over the past few years that on an ABB , TB Woods and GE drives that a DC over voltage or DC bus fault means replace drive. Most of time the drive can be repaired but, if the repair cost is more that 60% of a new drive, get a new one. Also if you are running a vector set up on a non vector motor that will kill it and also if there is a chance that the pump is "motoring" (no load regenerative power) you can put some breaking resistors on the system and that will bleed off the extra voltage from the drive and save the bus.

Hi all

Thank for your support. Cause the the ABB VFD drive trip by DC over voltage alarm is the 2.2 kw motor thermistor open circuit short to motor terminal box (Two wire is connected the thermistor back to VFD terminal X22-T6 and X22-T7),after overhaul repair , connect back & test run.

Now the VFD drive is back to service. Thank you.

you might also want to check the coolinf fans. If they are clogged they will cause an overtemp and sometimes the overtemp alarm is followed by an undervoltage fault. You can also fault trace to see if there are numerous faults or just 1 or 2. Usually only the last fault is shown unless you trace.
