ASME "U" stamp

06/23/2009 6:08 PM

What is the "U" stamp and what is procedure for a heat exchanger company to hold the right to stamp their products with the ASME "U" stamp? For how long the ASME qualification last for the company and how many times per year an inspector goes to the plant?

A quick Google search turned up a couple things... But i suggest if you want the most correct answer you get a copy of the standard itself... all your questions shall be answered upon receipt of the standard.

U-stamp is a product license denotes that all stages of equipment's design, construction, inspection and testing was carried out in accordance with ASME code. And that job was carried out by an organization own a staff/manpower and a quality control system, where all the three were qualified by ASME. And that job was carried out in the presence of an international third party authorized by ASME.

The following CR4 Threads have a relation with the subject:

U-Stamp Vessel Repair

ASME U2 stamp

ASME Sec. VIII

ASME Standards

Certification for pressure vessels

ASME

ASME Sec VIII Div 1

ASME VIII Div.2 ED.2007

Comparing ASME VIII Div.1 and Div.2?

As usual a very good answer my friend and I give you my GA. One thing I would suggest is for the poster to do research and contact an authorized inspection insurance co. such as Hartford Boiler, Kemper or One beacon to name a few if he is serious about this endeavor. All of these companies will be able and willing to guide you through the process of generating a quality control manual and setting up a program as well as assist in obtaining a stamp. Obtaining a stamp is a large investment and you should probably think about hiring a full time engineer or consultant that knows the ASME and National board inspection code if you plan to start doing code fabrication IMO. I have helped several companies get their Manual generated, write proper specs and procedures and according to the size of operation cost well over $20k just to get through the review. The other thing I see in the USA is a good many companies will spend the time and money to get a stamp and then find that the code fabrication/repair market is very competitive and that the expense of obtaining and maintaining the stamp as is not very profitable. I have worked with several companies to get a stamp and find that they only keep it until the first joint review and let it go because they have not done enough work to justify keeping it. On the other hand I have helped some companies that have done very well with code stamps. I do not want to discourage anyone from their goals but rather suggest them do allot of research before they proceed in this area and know what they are getting into before they start.

My dear friend pipewelder, thank you very much.

You have an excellent experience in preparing the Quality Control Manual, procedures and written practice required for the review of those organizations intent to hold or renewal of U-stamp. Also, I am interested in preparing the design calculations per ASME code, design drawings, workshop drawings, material requisitions, Fits and Tolerances, and datasheets for the review of those organization need to hold/renewal of U, R, S and PP-stamps. I have helped several companies here in Egypt, and welcome to help any abroad company.

Just enter "U Stamp" in Search all of CR4" window and click, you will find more than 30 earlier posts on the subject.

You will find many GAs from our friend Abdel Halim Galala. He is master of subject of pressure vessels, and he gives good answers without loosing patience to all the questions, even though replied earlier in many other post.

Abdel Halim Galala... GA from me in this post too.

The following link is free download for some files in DOC formats, and considered a very interesting guide to any firm need to hold ASME Certificate of Authorization: Guide_to_hold_ASME_Certificates_of_Authorization.
