Fish hooks are made from several types of metal wire and some specialty hooks are coated with protective coverings as well.

If you have ever seen the Sc channel and watched how those spring coils are made or even the chain links.....this is close to how fish hooks get made. They use a high grade metal wire and bend the gap, twist in the eye and make a barb. They can twist the shank to make offset, straight or the now famous Circle hook.

The high end companies test the hooks before shipping, for strength.

Dual or treble hooks are lightly welded or bent over.

Its all automated.

This machine delivers the hook.

Afterwards the hook can undergo different processes, like hardening, coating.

Some hooks are hand made and forged, like the blacksmith makes a horse shoe. But that is different story.

Well, this is what we (my fishing pal's) know so far. Surely they come up from a noisy machine from a coil of high grade steel. Then they will be hardening (btw, how to prevent that this process not change shape of the hook) and coating. Yeh, this is it, but...

Anyone have details about those "noisy" machines? How they sharp the point? How to make the barb? What such unique steel is that one that did not twist under temper?
