around here, it's called blinker fluid.

Cavaliers are notorious for blinker system leaks.

The blinker fluid reservoirs for Audis and BMWs are extremely small, I've noticed.

That's because Audi's and BMWs never leak, therefore they don't need large reserviors. I just read the chevy spec book and that Cavalier has a 2.9 liter reservoir for type "DA" blinker fluid. I bet it's leaking at the bottom through the warbler shaft.

Well it's so rare to see their blinkers operating... perhaps they get clogged every easily, or maybe they're difficult to refill, or maybe the EPA restricts the premium grade of blinker fluid due to the unobtainium hydrate it uses.

Now that you have confirmed the fluid is low, fill to proper level!

Oh, do you mean that you realize we are teasing you? It's all in fun, don't be offended.

Of course, you have checked the bulbs? Grounds? I don't think it would be a fuse.

Have you gone to any Cavalier forums?

Flicker fluid.

If the other side is working it's probably a bulb in the front or rear, or a bad ground, or corrosion in the receptacle, or the switch on the steering wheel, wire came loose, or disconnected wire .........

I put a new bulb in the back and it started to work but it still blinked fast. Then it died again. Later to day I went out to check it the signal system was running. Where is the flicker fluid located..

Fast blinking is an indication that the turn signal relay is about to go. This can lead to premature lamp failure. Does only the left side blink fast?

The flicker fluid can be checked and filled by removing the 710 cap. This is most likely on top of the engine, clearly marked with the number 710.

When you replaced the bulbs, be sure you have replaced it with the proper matching type and wattage! The symptom you mentioned after you replaced the bulb(s) to me indicates that you did not get the right kind of replacement bulb(s)! It will be blinking faster and soon will destroy the flasher. The flasher works base on the principle of heat generated when bulbs are turned on, then the flasher contact will open up to cool down. The rate of flashing is and will be dependent on the amount of heat generated in direct proportion to the amount of current drawn by both the front and rear bulbs combined wattage ratings! The bigger the wattage the faster it will flash and vice versa!

Fast blinking is the sign of a bad bulb....replace both front and rear at the same time....follow my link above for proper bulbs....front and rear bulbs are different, make sure you have proper bulb....clean receptacles with electrical spray cleaner....If damaged, replace....

....or equivalent....

Step one: time to put a 15year old POS car, one that was designed to last 5 years at most, out to pasture.

Steps 2 to infinitity become moot.

On-line auction sites are great for getting rid of problems like that.

That would work. Turn into the flicker fluid drive-in and get someone to pass some over.

Do you have a local breakers yard?

They can solve the problem.

BTW I thought when I opened this topic it may have been some off beat industrial alarm system. I got that well and truly wrong!

Yep. Crushing the car is a great solution - after draining the flicker fluid for someone else's use, of course.

Definitely one of the most overlooked items in a proper maintenance scheme:

Some of the mid-eighties Fords had a warning message appear in the Driver Information Center, but I don't know if the GM's ever made it to this level of sophistication.

Another brand:

This guy gives a great tutorial...be sure you watch it until the end:
