Hi All,
We're about to make the first significant changes to the CR4
site in about three years.
For much of the six-year life of CR4, we've allowed
unregistered users to post as "Guests."
We did this to allow as many people as possible to benefit from the site
and become a part of the community. While
we were leery of the potential for misuse, we always saw a high percentage of
quality posts coming from Guests. For
the first five years, Guests consistently provided quality content 95% of the
time. Unfortunately, we've seen a significant downturn in this percentage over
the last year, with nearly 40% of posts from Guests requiring
moderation at this point. This has helped foster a negative undertone on the
site and as a result, we've decided to end the practice. Later this week, only
registered members of CR4 will be allowed to post and comment. (Click here to register.)
We still believe anonymity has a place on CR4. Members will
still be able to toggle posts to as "anonymous," so that they can protect their
identities when discussing issues that are sensitive to their jobs or personal
well-being. These posts will not show up as "Guest," but as "Anonymous
Poster." If more than one member posts
anonymously in a thread, the comments will show up as "Anonymous Poster 1" and
"Anonymous Poster 2," which will help to delineate who is speaking.
We're happy that we were able to maintain the "Guest"
functionality as long as we did. It was an important part of building CR4 into
what it is today.
With the transition away from Guests, we're also changing
our policy on how many profiles a registered user may have. Moving forward, the
rule will be one real person, one CR4
account. A small number of users have
been creating multiple accounts to go after other users or to make their
opinions seem more important due to weight of numbers. This practice known as "creating sock puppets"
is frowned upon in most Internet circles and has helped to foster a negative tone on the site. If you are using more than one profile, feel
free to let us know which one you'd like to maintain via the CR4admin@globalspec.com email
address. If not, we will conclude that you'd like to maintain the profile with
the most posts, and the others will be closed.
We are confident these changes will help erase some of the
negative trends and ultimately make CR4 a friendlier, more-focused community.
